I would have been silly not to open – Lawrence

Getty Images

To what lengths would you go to fulfil your dreams?

Even if that chance does arise, but you’re probably (or very definitely) underqualified, do you take your shot?

As much as I want a spot on the line-up at Glastonbury, things would go south pretty quickly once Emily Eavis and co realised I can’t sing or play an instrument.

What about when a footballer says they will play in goal as long as they get in the team. Would you really, mate? Sounds like a great idea until the ball is being picked out of the net for the eighth time.

Which brings us to Dan Lawrence, England’s makeshift opener for three Tests last summer after Zak Crawley suffered a broken finger. A middle-order batter by trade, a place at the top of the order looked about as comfortable as the back end of a pantomime horse.

Still, the Surrey man had his chance. Put in Lawrence’s position, who can honestly say they would have declined?

Granted, Lawrence is in a vastly superior position to open for England than yours truly headlining the Pyramid Stage. He opened in his younger days and batting is batting, right?

Yes and no. Opening is a specialist position, suited to some and not others. The challenge of fresh pace bowlers armed with a new ball. The decisions of whether to play or leave, attack or defend, how best to set the tone for those who follow.

For Lawrence, a natural aggressor, an internal battle with what an opener should bat like was one he ultimately did not win.

“I struggled with the balance of wanting to play a certain style, which is really aggressive, and the other part in my head saying ‘you’re an opener; you need to see off the new ball’,” says Lawrence.

It’s hard not to feel for him. An entire 14-Test career has been stop-start. Just as Lawrence looked most at home, batting at number four on the 2022 West Indies tour that ended Joe Root’s reign as captain, he got injured to be ruled out of the beginning of Ben Stokes-Brendon McCullum regime.

Those early Bazballing days may have been a perfect fit for Lawrence, but instead the former Essex player had to wait more than two years between caps, carrying drinks in all parts of the globe.

Against Sri Lanka, scores of 30 and 34 in the first Test at Old Trafford were encouraging, only to be followed by three in single figures.

“The messaging in the England dressing room is be as free as you want to be,” Lawrence says. “It was just the pressure I put on myself.

“I was really desperate to keep a spot. I’d waited a long time. When you get that chance you want to make the most of it.”

The second innings in the third Test at The Oval was Lawrence’s final opportunity to remain in the team, or at least get a spot on a winter tour. A skittish run-a-ball 35 was the knock of a man necking pints in the last chance saloon. It looked worse in the context of a sloppy England defeat.

“I thought ‘if it is my last innings, I want to go out on my own terms’,” he says. “I just thought ‘I’m going to go out there and try to give it a smack’.

“I wouldn’t normally want to play that aggressively, but I thought I’d have some fun and see what happens.”

It wasn’t enough. Lawrence was overlooked for the tours of Pakistan and New Zealand, and knows he needs stacks of runs for Surrey to get back in the frame.

It might be that one door closing opens another. As England regenerate their white-ball teams, Lawrence could be one to benefit.

“When I first started the white-ball team was incredibly hard to get into, a brilliant side that was winning all the time,” says Lawrence.

“Now there’s an opportunity to put my name in the mix. There are some serious players, but no reason why I can’t be involved in that conversation.”

For various reasons – usually because of what the players say – England have been the subject of criticism for not caring enough.

The truth is the players care deeply and, while Lawrence articulates his disappointment, he is not bitter at being asked to perform an unfamiliar role, then dropped when it did not work out.

“I would have felt fairly hard done by had I not opened the batting, having been around the team for that long,” says Lawrence.

“If someone says ‘do you want to go and open the batting for England?’ I don’t think it’s an unfair thing. It’s an honour and really exciting.

“It didn’t pan out but, if it did, then who knows where I would be right now?

New parents Mark Wright and Michelle Keegan looked happier than ever as they enjoyed a walk with their newborn daughter. The happy couple, both 37, welcomed daughter Palma Elizabeth Wright into the world earlier this month after 10 years of marriage.

The former TOWIE star and actress Michelle co-ordinated outfits as they stepped out with baby Palma in a brown pram. Joined by the Michelle’s mum on the walk, the doting parents even stopped to take a snap with their first-born at one point.

Over the weekend, a knackered Mark confessed to being “a little bit tired” on his morning radio gig after becoming a first-time father on March 6. The 37-year-old hosts the Saturday Breakfast show on Heart FM with pal Olly Murs.

Taking to Instagram stories before going on air on Saturday, a bleary-eyed Mark rallied his listeners with a cheeky “get us on the radio, 9am ’til…” before sheepishly checking with his crew when he’s off-duty. He then quipped about his fatigue, admitting to his fans, “I’m a little bit tired today”, and sharing that he’d knocked back a couple of bevvies the night before—but refrained from spilling who was clinking glasses with him.

Although he kept mum on his drinking buddies, Mark suggested that there might have been some festivity ahead of the arrival of baby Palma. He had already declared earlier that it would help him “realise what life is all about.”

The new dad had a heartfelt moment when he held Olly in his arms during the show, and he now feels deeply about it. I suppose everything else is thrown out the window because it made me realize Palma, my little one, and how precious you are to me. What do you think the baby name Michelle and Mark means? Take a poll:

It’s a very special feeling, Mark moaned as to the unique joy of becoming a parent. It’s hard to describe in words. We’ve been waiting a while, pursued our goals, and are now here. There is a baby here.

Mark couldn’t hide how badly missing his young daughter he was when he made his return to the Heart FM studio just a few days after becoming a father. He intends to video call his wife, actress Michelle, to catch up on family time while he’s off-air.

He praised the actress for portraying her as a real-life superhero and noting that he has gained a lot of respect for mothers everywhere.

Before going on to reflect on the maternal sacrifices made by other people, he said, “It’s the biggest accomplishment of my life is all I think about. But obviously hats go off to my wife, she is an absolute superhuman, a superhero for bringing this baby into the world,” he continued, “It makes you realise what our mothers did for us and makes me have so much more respect than I already had and what women had to go through.”

Following the top-secret birth of their daughter Palma a week prior, the relieved couple, who are set to celebrate a decade of marriage on May 24, have been cozying up in their £3.5 million Essex home.

Ed Sheeran leaves busker gobsmacked with gesture after hearing him sing his songs

After an onlooker emailed the man’s rendition of his 2017 hit Perfect, the busker was left speechless by the generous actions of superstar Ed Sheeran.

A busker who was performing one of his hits has received a generous donation from Ed Sheeran.

After a chance encounter that led to the superstar watching his own performance, the busker who was sung by Ed Sheeran left stunned.

Finn Flood took to Twitter to share his memories of singing Ed’s 2017 hit, Perfect in a busy Manchester shopping district. A witness who had been peering from a nearby hotel window stopped while claiming to be a friend of the superstar during his rendition.

Finn’s jaw dropped as he said, “I work really close with him.” I just sent him a video of you revealing that I’m in Manchester, and I’ll show him it when he returns. Finn reacted in awe of hope and said, “Thank you very much. Wow. That is fantastic. That would be “busking for you”!

What are the chances that the guy will call him when he gets out of his hotel to watch him play Perfect and that he will send him Perfect because I’m playing his song? Wow, my god.

One TikTok user said, “Wow, that doesn’t happen everyday,” and Finn was delighted. Keep the $100 in mind. I’m hoping Ed will soon let you play on his stage. You deserved it, Finn, a second person gushed. Another outstanding talent, Ed Sheeran, recognized you as a great talent. “Fabulous”

Tinubu Would Have Resisted Suspension As Gov, Fubara Should Fight – Akande

Siminalayi Fubara should be the first to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s suspension as governor of the River State, according to former presidential spokesman Laolu Akande.

If a president had suspended him while he was governor of Lagos State between May 1999 and May 2007, Akande claimed that Tinubu would have contacted the Supreme Court right away. Tinubu, who was in the opposition when he was governor of Lagos, is alleged to have challenged the then-President’s government’s seizure of local government funds.

According to the former presidential aide, Fubara should have not waited for seven Peoples Democratic Party governors to file a lawsuit challenging his six-month suspension.

Akande lamented that Fubara lacks courage, noting that the decision to suspend a state’s elected governor was against the law.

He remarked, “The governors of the PDP have done a good job.” They would most likely be able to save the day. However, Governor Fubara’s presence makes me wonder. Do you know what Bola Ahmed Tinubu would do if someone abused him while he was the governor of Lagos?

He (Fubara) should be the first to appear in court because he still serves as governor and has a status that hasn’t been removed. That was impossible for him to be taken away. A doubtful suspension exists.

If Governor Fubara knew what he was doing, he should go to court first. And he couldn’t find the courage to tell his people that Rivers State’s actions are against the law.

How is it possible for me to serve as governor when the president who was also elected demands that I resign?

“Of course, I’ll leave so there’s no trouble, but I’ll go to court,” he said. And I’ll let my electorate know that the president has requested that I appear in court. I will protest because it is wrong. How can democracy be created in that manner. Agbada (flowing gown) is not about people.

a blend of Wike, Fagbemi, Tinubu, and Fubara.

Rivers State’s immediate-pas governor Nyesom Wike and his estranged ex-political godson Fubara have fought over the political structure’s hold on power for two years. Although a member of the PDP, Wike is the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister for Tinubu.

In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspended Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and first-time members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.

The powerbroker for the All Progressives Congress (APC) argued that Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution prevented him from standing up for what he thought would be best.

Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (rtd), a retired naval chief, was immediately appointed and sworn in as the oil-rich Niger Delta state’s sole administrator.

On March 19, 2025, Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rtd) will take the oath as the state’s sole administrator for Rivers State in Abuja.

The National Assembly approved the emergency rule in Rivers about 48 hours later, a move that pro-democracy activists and groups have criticised.
