South Korea says wildfires worst in its history, death toll rises to 26

Authorities in South Korea have declared that the country’s wildfires are still occurring, making them the worst to have ever affected them.

At least 26 people have been killed by the wildfires that started late on Friday in Sancheong county in Northern Gyeongsang province, according to local authorities on Thursday.

More than twice as much landmass as it was reported on Wednesday, and far more than the previous worst-ever wildfire in South Korea, which scorched 59, 000 acres (24,000 hectares) of land in March 2000, has burned.

According to a report from the Reuters news agency, South Korea’s acting president Han Duck-soo stated at a government meeting that “the unprecedented rapid spread of forest fires” is “the country’s critical situation with numerous casualties.

The fires that have spread across mountainous terrain in the country’s southeast, including Gyeongbuk, Uiseong, Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, and Sancheong, have been fought by South Korea’s fleet of more than 120 helicopters, which are being fueled by strong, dry winds.

On March 27, 2025, a wildfire destroyed the Gounsa temple in Uiseong county.

Although the meteorological agency in South Korea has predicted rain, the majority of the affected areas are expected to receive less than 5mm of precipitation.

According to Korea’s Forest Service Minister Lim Sang-seop, “the amount of rain is going to be small, so it doesn’t appear to be a big help in trying to put out the fire.”

According to government officials, the fires were likely brought on by human error, citing potential man-made causes, such as the burning of family tombs or sparks from welding equipment.

Authorities claim that only half the average amount of rain has fallen in many affected areas this season.

After being trapped by quick-moving flames in Sancheong county, South Gyeongsang province, four government employees and firefighters died on Saturday. In a remote area of Uiseong, a pilot died as a result of his helicopter’s collision while attempting to contain a fire.

Nearly 30 000 people have been forced to leave their homes as a result of fires that are already raging across their neighborhoods. &nbsp,

Half of the 30 structures that make up the Gounsa Buddhist temple in Uiseong county have also been engulfed in flames. Two state-designated “treasures” are among the damaged structures at Gounsa, one of which was constructed in the seventh century, a pavilion-shaped structure constructed in 1668 and a 1904 Joseon Dynasty structure constructed in 1904.

Raducanu loses in Miami after medical treatment

World No. 4 Jessica Pegula defeated Emma Raducanu to clinch her place in the Miami Open’s encouraging run.

The 22-year-old Briton leveled the game before American Pegula clinically regained control to win 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 despite needing medical care.

Raducanu had her best tennis playing in the second set since winning the US Open at the age of 20 as a teenager.

Before calling the doctor, the world number 60 had a 5-2 lead and four set points in the eighth game.

It was remarkable how Raducanu fought and showed fortitude to win the second set.

Pegula, one of the most consistent competitors on the WTA Tour, showed why she could not see the plan through.

Pegula, the US Open’s runner-up, said, “It was tough.” I merely wanted to jump on her in the third set and emerge extremely strong and quickly.

On Friday, the 31-year-old will face Philippine teenager Alexandra Eala in the semi-finals.

Raducanu demonstrates her leadership ability.

Since her dazzling victory in New York more than three years ago, questions have been posed frequently about Raducanu’s physical and mental resilience.

A number of injuries hampered Raducanu’s progress and the pressure of scrutiny made it difficult for her to make the full-time tour debut.

Issues have persisted.

Raducanu has been targeted by a stalker, dealt with a back injury, and had her trusted coach Nick Cavaday take a leave during the testing start of the season.

She reaffirmed her resolve to compete with the best in the world with her guts and ability in Miami.

On her way to the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time, despite losing to Pegula, she still managed eye-catching victories over top-20 rivals Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova.

Raducanu will also find it very satisfying to know that next week she will be back in the top 50 of the WTA.

For the first time since her US Open triumph, she collected four victories in a row, which was another indication of her progress.

Pegula is pushed all the way by Raducanu.

With a more secluded play, Raducanu found success in Miami, which gave her more room to play.

Raducanu and Slovak coach Vladimir Platenik had a trial partnership before the competition, so Raducanu requested advice from some well-known faces.

Mark Petchey, a well-known player in British tennis who assisted Raducanu in her teenage years, became her long-time confidante Jane O’Donoghue and Yutaka Nakamura, a fitness instructor.

With her clean ball-striking and sharp movement, Raducanu claimed the set-up made it possible for her to be “authentic” and “express” herself on court.

Raducanu lost the opening set thanks to Pegula’s strong groundstrokes, which produced few errors.

However, Raducanu found her play to be inspiring because of how good it was.

As the second set progressed, she quickly earned her reward with an early break as the momentum changed, adopting a more aggressive strategy.

When Raducanu complained of dizziness and was unable to balance with the double break, it appeared as though she was waiting when she had finished her treatment.

Australia’s PM Anthony Albanese set to call election ‘imminently’

As the May 17 deadline for electing a new parliament quickly approaches, Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declares that he intends to hold an election “imminently.”

I can foresee that it will occur in May. And it will be called pretty soon, Albanese said on Thursday on Triple M radio.

“I won’t call it right away, but I will call it soon.” He said, “I believe Australians want to get on with it.”

According to separate reports from The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian newspapers, Albanese is scheduled to visit Governor-General Sam Mostyn’s Canberra on Friday to call the election.

To dissolve parliament and hold general elections, Albanese must be given Mostyn’s permission as governor-general of the United Kingdom, King Charles’s representative.

Although Albanese’s office has not yet made any comments on the claim, The Australian reported that the election would take place on May 3.

In light of the rising living expenses, Albanese’s Labor Party has put forth a number of measures to appease voters.

A person making an average income would be eligible for a 268-Australian-dollar ($170) tax cut in the fiscal year ending June 2027 and a 536-Australian-dollar ($338) cut the following year.

Although welcome, the tax relief, which was implemented during the current fiscal year, was only 1, 654 Australian dollars ($1, 044).

The Liberal-National coalition’s leader, Peter Dutton, made his pre-election promises that the government would reduce the fuel excise tax by half, calling it a “real, immediate relief” that could save single-car families 750 Australian dollars ($473) over the course of a year.

What can moviegoers expect, though? Miley appears in a number of high-glamorous locations in Los Angeles in the trailer. Miley is seen writhing on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in all her glory, covered in crocodile tears, sporting big hair, bold looks, and body glitter.

And as you would expect from any pop opera helmed by Miley, the beauty and fashion is impeccable. According to Miley’s Instagram post, the visual narrative features “archival Thierry Mugler couture, Jean Paul Gaultier, custom Alexander McQueen, and Alaïa.”

Even fashion icons were excited by the exceptional couture Easter eggs scattered through the trailer. Miley’s Instagram post elicited a rare single-word comment from the formidable supermodel Naomi Campbell: “BEAUTIFUL”.

Miley confirmed she drew inspiration from Pink Floyd for her Something Beautiful(Image: X)

Something Beautiful is a follow-up to the singer’s 2023 LP Endless Summer Vacation, and she has been teasing for months that this will be a particularly special project for her. In November 2024, Miley teased her thinking and inspiration in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. She revealed that she drew particular inspiration from Pink Floyd’s iconic visual album The Wall. “My idea was making The Wall, but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture,” she said.

Miley referred to the upcoming album as “hypnotizing and glamorous.” It’s a concept album, she continues, “that attempts to use music to somewhat ameliorate a sick culture.”
