Conflicts trigger globe’s highest rate of internet shutdowns in 2024: NGO

Governments around the world oversaw a record-breaking year for internet shutdowns in 2024, a new report on “digital violence” suggests.

There were 296 internet shutdowns documented across 54 countries last year, surpassing the 283 shutdowns in 39 countries in 2023, says the report by Access Now and the #KeepItOn coalition, published on Monday.

According to the report, conflict remained the main reason behind internet shutdowns for a second consecutive year, with perpetrators using strategies ranging from severing cables and jamming devices to destroying infrastructure and sabotaging service providers.

Myanmar led the global list of offenders with 85 internet shutdowns. The military government primarily ordered the outages to “a population that resisted its dictatorship four years after the coup,” according to Access Now.

Cross-border shutdowns saw a sharp rise. These included shutdowns carried out by Russia in Ukraine, Israel in Gaza, and Thailand and China in Myanmar.

India dropped from the top in 2023 to second place, with 84 shutdowns. Pakistan recorded 21 shutdowns, its highest-ever total.

Israeli ‘ digital violence ‘ in MENA region

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region saw 41 internet shutdowns across 17 countries in 2024, down from 77 in 2023. However, the number of affected countries increased from 15 to 17.

Authorities in 10 MENA countries implemented 18 platform blocks in 2024 as a method of information control, the report said, while armed conflicts drove 12 internet shutdowns, endangering civilians ‘ safety.

In spite of international criticism, Israel “systematically shut down” connectivity and destroyed telecommunication infrastructure during its war against Gaza, according to the report.

Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and its rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) used weapons to obstruct millions of people’s access to essential services in Sudan during the ongoing conflict.

The year also saw cyberattacks from the Anonymous Sudan hacker group causing shutdowns in Bahrain, Chad, and Israel, while Mauritania enacted the region’s first election-related shutdown since 2021.

Anton Du Beke breaks silence on Giovanni Pernice’s return to Strictly Come Dancing

Giovanni Pernice should be a friend, according to Antonio Du Beke, who has spoken out about him.

Anton, the Strictly Come Dancing judge and professional dancer, was discussing his new golf podcast with Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain on Monday. After being accused of inappropriate behavior in previous series, Anton then had a brief conversation with his pal Giovanni Pernice, who stopped showing up on Strictly at the end of last year.

Giovanni and Anton are good friends off screen, and have presented the BBC travel shows Anton &amp, Giovanni’s Adventures in Sicily and Anton &amp, Giovanni’s Adventures in Spain together. From June this year, they will be performing Anton &amp, Giovanni: Together Again on a tour.

Anton Du Beke
On GMB (ITV), Anton mentioned his friend Giovanni.

Richard Madeley also posed a question for Anton about his former Strictly coworker while he was on the show to talk about his love of golf and the new golfing podcast he is hosting with Sarah Stirk from Sky Sports TV.

“I’ve got a slightly tricky question for you”, Richard said, adding, “It’s been reported that you personally would welcome Giovanni Pernice back onto Strictly. You would welcome him back, but we are aware that the BBC accepted six bullying complaints against him and rejected others. That’s sticking your head above the parapet. Why would you do that”?

“That’s a very good question”, Anton replied, while going on to not to completely answer it. “I’d prefer to be talking about the golf”.

Anton and Giovanni
For the BBC (BBC/BBC Studios), Anton and Giovanni have produced two travel shows.

He continued, “I was delighted for Giovanni because he performed at the Strictly Come Dancing in Italy with the outstanding Bianca Guaccero.” I’ll be seeing him when we return on the road because he was delighted to receive that and we’re going on a tour this summer.

I have known him for a long time, and I enjoy going on stage with him and performing with him. We’ve got a wonderful company as well, so all in all, it’s a great show”.

Giovanni made a statement about the possibility of returning to the Strictly dancefloor last month. The dancer took a step back from the show’s 2024 series following claims from his 2023 partner, Amanda Abbington, concerning issues with his conduct.

Giovanni Pernice has reportedly slashed the price of his latest tour tickets
Strictly Come Dancing (FILE) was recently won by Giovanni Pernice in Italy.

Amanda Abbington had claimed Pernice created a “toxic environment” and levelled “inappropriate, mean, nasty bullying” charges at Pernice. The Italian defended any hints of abusive or obscene behavior and praised the findings of a BBC investigation that found “some, but not all” of the actress’s complaints.

Although it was acknowledged that there weren’t any physical agressions, it appears that verbal bullying and harassment allegations have been made public. Speaking about a possible Strictly return, the 34 year old told Heat: “I would love to go back on Strictly but I don’t think they’re going to have me on again”.

He added: “It wasn’t the most pleasant situation for me. Everyone can move on with their lives now that it is over, and I’m happy to see it over.

” As Italians, we are familiar, more familiar than maybe foreigners, with the debate within the church that are very similar to the debate in every society: the role of the gays, conservative, progressive, the role of women. So Sergio]castmember Sergio Castellitto] and I were more familiar, maybe than all of you, but we don’t know exactly what happens during the Conclave. The film reveals the possible debates. “

Sergio Castellitto chimed in:” For us that live in Rome, to live at a few meters, few yards from the Pope is to have a much closer relationship. We see the helicopter leaving his place: ‘ Oh, is the Pope flying off today and coming back! ‘ As Italians, our relationship with the Pope is much more close. I repeat, I really wish him well. “

Pope Francis was taken to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 and is currently in critical condition, according to a statement from the Vatican on Sunday. It explained:” The condition of the Holy Father remains critical, but since yesterday evening, he has not experienced any further respiratory crises…

Palmer or Salah for captain? FPL tips & team of the week

BBC Sport

There’s a big call to be made this week in Fantasy Premier League as the two highest-owned players compete for the captain’s armband.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (owned by 71.9% of players) and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer (60.7%) are the two main choices.

Do you play safe with Salah, the man who rarely fails to deliver at home against a typically decent Newcastle defense but who leaked four against Manchester City and three against Nottingham Forest on Sunday?

Or take a chance on a poor Southampton side that is sending goals at home against a Palmer-of-form team?

Both make this week’s team – but who will be skipper?

How did last week’s team do?

Truly abysmal with no Salah, Bournemouth triple-up flopping and only Kaoru Mitoma returning. Just 26 points.

Keeper and defence

Aaron Wan-Bissaka Getty Images

Alphonse Areola, West Ham, goalkeeper, £4.2m – Leicester City (h)

This week’s double West Ham defense is all about Leicester City, a struggling club.

In eight of their previous eleven games, the visitors have not scored. That is terrible, but West Ham did a good job of keeping a clean sheet last time at Arsenal.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, West Ham, £4.4m – Leicester City (h)

Wan-Bissaka has two goals and three assists in his best offensive season since 2020-21, which is not particularly high-upside.

He had a fantastic game against Arsenal, and he has the most bonus points in the league, nine more than Max Kilman, who is next with five.

Patrick Dorgu, Manchester United, £4.5m – Ipswich Town (h)

The young Dane was United’s most impressive player in the topsy-turvy draw at Everton, with 17 final-third touches and four crosses.

If Ruben Amorim uses him as he does, making him essentially a left-winger, he will likely get attacking returns, and a clean sheet might come along with it if United ever decide to get their act together defensively.

Marc Cucurella, Chelsea, £5.1m – Southampton (h)

Chelsea feel like the obvious clean sheet shout this week, at home against the league’s lowest scorers.

The issue is that they lack a large number of trustworthy defensive options.

Midfield

Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo Getty Images

Bryan Mbeumo, Brentford, £8m – Everton (h)

What was I thinking, leaving Mbeumo out of the team of the week last time as he scored 14 points away at Leicester?

With David Moyes’ side having drawn two 2-2 draws in their previous three games, he is now 11 points clear of Palmer for the season. This week’s game against Everton could turn into another bonanza.

Mohamed Salah (vice captain), Liverpool, £13.7m – Newcastle (h)

After a one-week rest, Salah is back in this week but no captain’s armband for the Egyptian.

Why? Although there is a risk, Newcastle has the potential to hold things together, and Palmer’s victory over Southampton is too important to ignore.

If you have both and are more cautious with risk, you might as well stick with Salah.

Cole Palmer (captain), Chelsea, £11.1m – Southampton (h)

In FPL you either play the form or the fixtures, and ideally both.

Palmer, who has only had one assist in his past five games and appears out of sorts, is undoubtedly a fixture choice this week.

However, Salah is the only player with the same explosive potential as this, who has eight double-digits this year.

Chelsea can certainly get three or four goals here, and Saints conceded four at home to Brighton last week, and Palmer will likely play a part in some of those goals.

Pedro Neto, Chelsea, £6.2m – Southampton (h)

You have to assume that Enzo Maresca will give Neto another start since he was Chelsea’s most impressive attacking player at Aston Villa.

Neto has had a slow start to his career, but he was unlucky not to score on Saturday when he passed the eye test.

Jarrod Bowen, West Ham, £7.3m – Leicester (h)

It’s simple to make the winning combination for West Ham against Leicester.

Strikers

Matheus Cunha Getty Images

Beto, Everton, £5m – Brentford (a)

The Guinea-Bissau striker has 35 points in four games, which is incredible, and his price makes him a great enabler when you want to equip your team with premium assets.

In the draw against Manchester United, he only scored once, but it’s possible there were more.

There is nothing to worry about when you travel to Brentford, which has the worst defensive record among the bottom five.

Matheus Cunha, Wolves, £6.9m – Fulham (h)

Cunha, who has scored in his last three games, may have won the FPL title in the coming weeks.

After this one, the Brazilian faces Everton, Southampton, West Ham and Ipswich.

Even his later matches against Tottenham, Manchester United, and Leicester might be beneficial.

Subs bench

Dean Henderson, Crystal Palace, goalkeeper, £4.5m – Aston Villa (h)

Daniel Munoz, Crystal Palace, defender, £4.9m – Aston Villa (h)

Joao Pedro, Brighton, striker, £5.4m – Bournemouth (h)

Rayan Ait-Nouri, Wolves, defender, £4.7m – Fulham (h)

Player to watch

Chido Obi Getty Images

Chido Obi, Manchester United, striker, £4.5m

Rasmus Hojlund has two league goals while Joshua Zirkzee has three, but United’s strikers have been terrible this year.

If Ruben Amorim gave Obi, 17, a chance to start in the team after making two substitute appearances so far, it would not come as a shock.

Team to target

Wolves – Fulham (h), Everton (h), Southampton (a)

Wolves have a fantastic run of games in store, as Cunha and I mentioned above.
