Slot given two-game touchline ban

Getty Images

Arne Slot’s red card against Everton resulted in a two-game touchline ban for the Liverpool manager.

After the Premier League draw ended 2-2 at Goodison Park on February 12 with him approaching referee Michael Oliver on the field.

Slot will miss both the 8-marathon visit to Southampton and the league leaders’ home game against Newcastle on Wednesday.

He can be on the touchline for the Champions League last-16 first-leg tie with Paris St-Germain on 5 March.

For failing to control their players, Liverpool’s assistant coach Sipke Hulshoff was banned for two games and given a £7, 000 fine. Both Liverpool and Everton were fined £65, 000 and £50, 000, respectively.

James Tarkowski’s 98th-minute equaliser sparked chaotic scenes, with Everton fans entering the field to celebrate.

For a push on defender Ibrahima Konate in the build-up, Liverpool believed Tarkowski should have ruled out the goal, which was checked by the video assistant referee (VAR).

Before handing Oliver a red card, Slot exchanged words with one of the assistant referees. Additionally, Hasshoff was terminated.

After five minutes of initial signaling, Slot, who was unable to speak with the media following the game because of his red card, later expressed his disappointment with how much stoppage time was being played.

Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure and Liverpool’s Curtis Jones were sent off after the final whistle for second yellow cards. Both served one-game bans.

After the international break, when Liverpool take on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on March 16, Slot will play his first domestic game back in the dugout.

Liverpool, who are 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League, face Everton at Anfield on 2 April.

Ireland face ‘two incredibly tough games’ – Osborne

Getty Images

In their final two Six Nations games against France and Italy, Ireland fullback Jamie Osborne says the team will face significant challenges.

Osborne scored Ireland’s second try on Saturday as they defeated Wales 27-18 to secure a 14th Triple Crown.

The leaders’ record-breaking third successive Six Nations title and a potential Grand Slam were clinched with that victory in three matches.

France will face off against Italy in Dublin on March 8 before Ireland will face the Italians a week later.

“They’re going to be two incredibly tough games”, said the Leinster back.

“We’ll take a week’s break and concentrate on France, but it will be incredibly tough. We’re not going to focus on that]breaking records], we’ll focus on the France game first”.

The visitors came back from 18-10 down to win the match in Cardiff after receiving a 20-minute red card from Ireland’s Garry Ringrose.

It demonstrates how firmly anchored our collective belief is. In the first half, we committed a few errors, which allowed Wales to regain possession of the ball, Osborne said.

Everyone just thought to go back to basics, clean up errors, and we did it thankfully, even though we were down at the break.

Brentford’s Cochrane joins England coaching staff

Brentford first-team coach Justin Cochrane has joined Thomas Tuchel’s England backroom staff.

The 43-year-old will continue to serve the Bees while also working for the Three Lions.

The likes of Noni Madueke, 22, and 20-year-olds Lewis Hall and Rico Lewis – who are now all full England internationals – have been coached by Cochrane, having played under him during his time as manager of England Under-15s, Under-16s and Under-17s.

Cochrane remarked, “This is a really exciting opportunity for me, and I’m incredibly grateful to Brentford for allowing me to take this role.”

“Most of all, I’m eager to assist this extremely talented group in achieving its goals.

Cochrane, a former Antigua and Barbuda international, made 72 appearances between 2003 and 2006 during his 13-year club career that culminated with his Championship debut at Crewe Alexandra.

Cochrane began his coaching career at Tottenham before moving to Manchester United to lead the club’s academy and player development.

He left Brentford in 2022, one year after the Bees’ promotion to the Premier League.

Cochrane joins Tuchel’s backroom staff after Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilario, and Nicolas Mayer, both of whom are already in place.

Baxter wants England talks after Feyi-Waboso injury

Rob Baxter, the manager of Exeter, urges clubs to discuss how injured centrally-subtracted players are treated in discussions with England.

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, 22, injured his shoulder again while training with England, making it the rest of the season for Baxter.

Feyi-Waboso dislocated his shoulder just before Christmas, so he had been ready for surgery in early January.

However, under the new Professional Game Partnership agreement, England has the final say regarding medical issues involving centrally contracted players, and delays caused by the RFU’s involvement in the injury management.

Feyi-Waboso had been receiving non-surgical care well up until last week when he injured himself.

Everyone agreed that the entire scenario regarding how things should have worked needs to be discussed following the Six Nations, according to Baxter, who spoke to BBC Sport.

According to Baxter, whether the injury required surgery or not, and that the new agreement’s first test case was challenging.

As part of England getting control of the country’s best 25 players, the RFU agreed a deal to up their funding to the 10 Premiership clubs.

He added that after two scans, an operation was scheduled to follow, which would make him fit for the time being.

Everyone can understand the various factors that contributed to some of the delays, and I believe that ultimately led to the more wise choice to pursue rehab.

The shoulder obviously needed an operation, so it ultimately doesn’t look like the wise one.

However, according to Baxter, Feyi-Waboso still had a chance to make the British and Irish Lions’ summer squad.

The medical student made the decision to play for England rather than his birthplace of Wales at the start of the current season.

He won his first cap at the Six Nations last year, and he has since won eight other tournaments, including one for England, in New Zealand.

” There often seems to be in a Lions year someone that comes in a little bit out of nowhere, they’ve either been injured or not quite broken through, “said Baxter, who saw a young Jack Nowell make the 2017 Lions tour to New Zealand.

He will be there or somewhere with a chance of getting there someday, but all we can do is work hard with him right now.

Man Utd planning post-season matches in Asia

Following the Premier League’s final two games in May, Manchester United will play two games in Hong Kong and Malaysia in the offseason.

Last season, Tottenham and Newcastle flew to Australia for an end-of-season friendly – described as “madness” by BBC pundit Alan Shearer.

With FA Cup replays being eliminated in an effort to ease the congestion in the football calendar, Fifa’s expanded Club World Cup and Uefa’s larger Champions League format have been extensively discussed this season.

Up to 200 staff members will lose their jobs as a result of a second round of redundancies announced by United this week.

Despite bringing in huge revenues from commercial, matchday and broadcasting income, United have lost more than £300m in the past five years.

On Tuesday, head coach Ruben Amorim accepted the first-team group bear responsibility for driving up revenues, as the “engine” of the club.

Playing games abroad is one way to do that. The club is set to return to the United States next summer as part of the Premier League’s pre-season tournament, beginning in late July, after the Club World Cup has concluded.

Although nothing has yet been agreed, United is almost certain that they will travel to the Far East for two games against unknown opponents.

Between the Champions League final on May 25 and the final match against Aston Villa on May 31, there is a week before players are required to be released for international duty.
