Following ten months of sustained protests against right-wing populist President Aleksandar Vucic, a Pride march in central Belgrade drew condemnation for police brutality against antigovernment demonstrators in Serbia.
The event, which took place on Saturday without incident, also provided support for the university students who are spearheading nationwide demands for immediate elections, a stance Vucic continues to refute.

The Pride march organizers cited police brutality and the arrest of protesters as examples of “we cannot close our eyes” at what is happening in their country.
They continued, noting that this year’s Pride march was itself a protest, that “Pride won’t take part in bringing about a sense of normalcy.”
Participants held banners, including one that read “Gays against police state” at the gathering in the city’s center!
In Novi Sad, the student-led student protest movement started in November when 16 people died as a result of a roof collapse at a train station.
Demonstrators have attributed the tragedy to corrupt practices, with their initial demands for a fair investigation eventually turning into demands for new elections.
National demonstrations started off peacefully for the first nine months, but violent clashes started to break out in mid-August. Difficulty civilians and police officers have been injured in the country since then.
In Novi Sad, thousands of protesters marched toward the city’s university campus late on Friday for speeches before taking to the streets.
Students accused police of starting “brutal attacks on their own citizens” by using tear gas and stun grenades to disrupt the march.
Ivica Dacic, the interior minister, reported to the state-run RTS on Saturday that 42 of the demonstrators had been detained and that 13 police officers had been hurt in a “massive and brutal attack.”
Vucic claimed that protesters were attempting to “threaten the stability and security of Serbia” and “occupy the university premises in Novi Sad” when they spoke about the incident on Friday.
It was an evening that promised so much for Aaron Rodgers, the New York Jets and their long-suffering fans.
More than half a century after their only Super Bowl win, the Jets finally had a quarterback capable of leading them back to NFL glory.
Having built a championship-calibre roster, the Jets added a superstar just two years removed from his fourth MVP award.
Now Rodgers was about to make his Jets debut and moments before kick-off at MetLife Stadium, the lights were dimmed for him to make a grand entrance.
It was the 22nd anniversary of 9/11 and the crowd roared with excitement as Rodgers charged onto the field carrying an American flag.
But the euphoria soon turned despair. Just four plays into his Jets career, Rodgers went down with what proved to be a season-ending Achilles injury.
NFL writer Melissa Jacobs told BBC’s Sport Today that it was “the single most devastating moment for a franchise in NFL history”.
Why did Rodgers mean so much to Jets?
“The hype was off the charts,” says New York-based sportswriter Ian O’Connor.
He already felt that Rodgers was the “most compelling and polarising figure” in the NFL and his bid to win a championship for “a loser-ville franchise in the NFL’s biggest market” inspired him to write a Rodgers biography.
O’Connor had followed the Jets’ sorry search for a successor to legendary quarterback Joe Namath, which had turned them into a laughing stock. They have failed to reach the post-season since 2011, the longest current play-off drought in the NFL.
But, after 18 years and a Super Bowl win with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers was ready to swap the NFL’s smallest market for the Big Apple and relished his new lifestyle.
He made numerous public appearances and Jets fans warmed to their new star after seeing how he was portrayed in the Hard Knocks series, which followed the Jets’ training camp.
“I’ve been covering sports in New York for almost four decades and I’ve never seen a superstar athlete from another market embracing New York like Aaron Rodgers did,” O’Connor told BBC Sport. “It was a total love-fest.
“Jets fans couldn’t get enough of it. New Yorkers really embraced him and didn’t care about his vaccine views or conspiracy theories.
“They didn’t care about anything except his football talent and the chance to see the Jets reach the Super Bowl for the first time since Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon (1969).
“To have that ripped away four plays into the season, it was a tough night. I was in the building and I’ve never been more heart-sick for an athlete and a fanbase.”
Without Rodgers, the Jets finished the 2023 season with a 7-10 record and although he returned last year, head coach Robert Saleh was sacked as the Jets slumped to 5-12.
Jets make ‘difficult decisions’ after Rodgers era

Even after Rodgers returned from injury, it seemed the Jets were never able to shake that feeling of what might have been.
There were issues throughout last season, but this year offered the Jets a chance to start afresh after going all in on Rodgers did not work out.
Rick Spielman has become the Jets’ senior football advisor and helped conduct what he calls an “after-action review” on behalf on team owner Woody Johnson, the former US ambassador to the UK.
“You learn every year, you look back and reflect,” he told BBC Sport. “You address those difficult decisions and Ambassador Johnson is very honed in on making sure that the New York Jets eventually win another Super Bowl.”
This year the Jets’ roster has seen more turnover than any other NFL team, and they come into the 2025 season with a new head coach, new general manager and new quarterback.
Justin Fields will play for his third team in three years and, coincidentally, the 26-year-old was at Pittsburgh last season so both he and Rodgers will face their previous team on Sunday.
Rodgers exit ‘like cutting the head off the snake’

An unnamed Jets player told ESPN that he respected the new leadership’s swift decision on Rodgers because it was “like cutting off the head of the snake”.
They then brought in Fields, a very different player and personality to Rodgers, and Jets coach Glenn suggested the veteran’s profile was a distraction by saying that Fields is “not trying to be a celebrity quarterback”.
Jets guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, who has suffered a season-ending triceps injury, told BBC Sport: “Aaron brought a little more of everything, but that’s natural for a four-time MVP. I think Aaron enjoyed his time here, I enjoyed his time here, but now it’s in the past.”
Away from the bright lights of New York, Rodgers is trying to make friends in Pittsburgh and build chemistry with his new team-mates.
The Steelers have struggled at quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement after the 2021 season. They wanted to keep Fields, who spent most of last season as back-up, but he chose the Jets.
And although Fields says there are no hard feelings before Sunday’s reunion, he admits “the storyline is crazy. I mean, that’s why the NFL set us up for week one”.
Rodgers has said that his Jets entrance was one of his few “special moments” in New York.

EXCLUSIVE: Love Islander-turned-documentary maker Georgia Harrison is two months away from welcoming her first child with City boyfriend Jack Stacey – as she opens up about her journey to motherhood
The reality star says her pregnancy has flown by(Image: Instagram)
Just two months away from giving birth to her first child, Georgia Harrison is positively glowing. And while many mums-to-be might be feeling the nerves kick in, the former Love Island star is happily going through the motions. “I can’t wait to give birth, I’m really looking forward to it,” beams Georgia, 30, as OK! catches up with her at the celeb-filled Superdrug Presents event in East London. “I’ve got the mentality of, ‘Why get nervous about something that is definitely going to happen?’ If I’ve got to face any troubles or adversity, I’ll deal with it when I get there. At the moment I’m just so excited.”
Georgia is expecting a little one with her partner Jack Stacey, 33, whom she met through a dating app last summer. The couple announced their pregnancy news in April after a whirlwind 10-month romance, as Georgia sweetly said, “I still can’t believe I’ve finally got everything I ever wanted and I couldn’t be more grateful.”

When it comes to her experience with pregnancy so far, Georgia – who is displaying her bump in a stunning crop top and blazer combo at the time of our interview – says it’s not been the easiest seven months, but she’s finding her glow again now.
“This third trimester has been really good. During the second I was really tired and unmotivated, to be honest. It was nothing compared to what other women experience, as some people are spending the whole pregnancy with their head down the toilet! So I do feel blessed in that way. But I definitely didn’t feel like the normal version of me and was groggy before. Although, recently, I’m back in the gym and feeling like myself again, so I think it’s just understanding that and going through the motions, isn’t it?”
The reality star and her beau have decided to keep the gender as a surprise until labour, with Georgia “excited” to find out whether she has a little girl or boy on the way.
There isn’t long to go either, with Georgia set to give birth on 5 November as she admits that the pregnancy has flown by for her. “It’s gone really fast, so now it’s just a countdown of getting everything done, I think it’s going to fly by. I’ve still been working. When you’re pregnant it does slow down and the opportunities slow down too. But anything I can do from home I have been doing.”

Between working and getting prepared to become parents, Georgia laughs that she and her partner have lost track of time when it comes to getting their lives baby-proofed.
“Me and Jack are definitely not prepared! We’re almost there with the nursery, but we have had some ups and downs. We ordered the wrong wallpaper and the wrong colour crib, so we had to send those back, but we are getting there! We’re doing a lot of flat-packing, once your relationship makes it through three days in a row of flat-packing, you know you’re doing well – it’s a real struggle,” she says with a joking eye roll.
Georgia’s romance with Jack came just months after she appeared on Love Island: All Stars last year, where she was looking for love on ITV2 for a second time. She left the villa with co-star Anton Danyluk, but split from the Scottish reality star four weeks later, then met city worker Jack and has since settled with him in Essex.
And while All Stars might seem like a lifetime ago for the star, she is looking forward to watching the next series of the show from the comfort of her own home – and with a baby in tow. “I really enjoyed watching this year’s series of Love Island, they did so well with the casting. I thought it was the most dramatic series ever, but I loved it. I’m just getting ready to watch All Stars now, I can’t wait. I’ve got no idea who will be on it, but I’m sure it will be a good watch.”
The star says Paul C Brunson gave her a ‘safe space’ to open up on his podcast
Georgia’s days of reality dating shows are firmly over, but she has been getting deep and personal in other ways, recently appearing on Paul C Brunson’s We Need To Talk podcast. During the near-two-hour episode, Georgia opened up about previous relationship struggles, campaigning against revenge porn and life before Love Island.
Looking back at the experience, Georgia said, “It was amazing being on Paul’s podcast, he’s really, really good and is someone that makes sure you’re comfortable. He doesn’t make you feel like you’re on edge or that you need to talk about anything, it’s up to you what you talk about.
