Authorities arrest 13 suspects over killing of Mexico City officials

Authorities in Mexico City have detained 13 people for allegedly playing roles in the May 2012 attack, which allegedly claimed the lives of two top government officials.

On Wednesday, Brugada said three people were directly involved in the shooting, despite not releasing their names.

She told reporters that “13 people were detained in this operation, including three people who directly participated in the murder, and others who had to do with the logistical preparation of the event.”

The city, which is seen as a relative safety haven in comparison to the rest of the nation, was shocked by the daytime shooting of two of Brugada’s top aides by gunmen riding motorcycles.

Ximena Guzman, the personal secretary of Brugada, and Jose Munoz, their advisers, were the victims.

This government will not stand in for justice until the truth is known and justice is served, the mayor declared in a social media post on Wednesday.

Claudia Sheinbaum, a Brugada ally who previously served as the capital’s mayor, pledged that her government would ensure that “justice is served” following the shooting.

In May, Sheinbaum stated, “We express our solidarity and support for the families of these two individuals who have long been active in our movement.”

“We know them, we support their families, and we will give her]Brugada” all the Mexican government’s needs,” the mayor said.

Mexico has struggled with high crime rates and murders, including those committed against journalists and political and security officials, for decades.

Omar Garcia Harfuch, the security chief in Mexico City, survived an ambush by gunmen that resulted in the deaths of two of his bodyguards and a bystander in 2020.

Sheinbaum’s administration announced a security strategy shortly after taking office last year that focused on boosting intelligence gathering, strengthening the National Guard, and addressing root causes, including poverty.

The United States issued a travel advisory for Mexico earlier this month in light of security risks. The country has been struggling with its own crime rates.

Rain washes out US Open qualifying as roof saves mixed doubles

As organisers cut their losses early, persistent rain nearly wiped out the day’s US Open qualifying.

Before it was decided to halt play for the day, it was around 16:00 local time (21:00 BST), only 14 of the 64 second-round qualifying matches could have started on Wednesday.

The semi-final and final will be protected by the roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium, with no weather having an impact on the new-look mixed doubles’ climax.

Jodie Burrage and Jay Clarke, both from Great Britain, were among the few qualifiers who had earlier a chance to appear in court.

After 41 minutes of play, Burrage, who had advanced to the second round in 2023, was forced to concede a 5-3 lead to Dutch rival Arantxa Rus.

The scoreline also showed Clarke’s complacency in the matchup with Arthur Cazaux, the top seed in France.

Billy Harris, Francesca Jones, Harriet Dart, and Oliver Crawford, two other Britons, did not even leave the court.

The rest of Wednesday is expected to be rainy, before it will stop on Thursday.

The three qualifying rounds will close on Sunday with the singles main draws taking place.

One-Day Cup: wins for Durham, Notts and Essex

With a four-wicket win over Hampshire, Jack Haynes’ 1997 kept Nottinghamshire’s chances of making it to the knockout stages of the One-Day Cup on track.

With eight balls left, the visitors chased down 291 at Southampton with the help of his 89-ball knock, which included 12 fours, and captain Haseeb Hameed’s 86 from 80 deliveries.

As a result of Nick Gubbins’ unbeaten 144 earlier in the day, his team posted 290-7 victory with a 14-4 and 4-6 victory.

With only two games left, Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire now trail second-placed Hampshire by two points after winning. This position kept them third in Group A.

With his 10th List A hundred and a career-best 144, also not out, made against Glamorgan in the tournament’s opening match, Gubbins appeared to be giving Hampshire a leg up for the knockout stage.

However, Hameed started the chase well, hitting eight fours and three sixes when Haynes fell in the 32nd over.

Both sides needed to win to maintain their quest for the knockout stage at Leicester.

Rishi Patel scored 94 off 119 balls, and Lewis Hill scored 93 from 95, sharing 166 for the second wicket, for the home side, who were sent in.

Derbyshire, six down, needed 16 from 14 balls, and Harry Came responded with a strong start with 67 at the top of the order.

However, after three wickets, Zak Chappell tripped over his bat while attempting a leg bye and was run out with one more run needed off the final ball.

After a fantastic 190-run victory over Glamorgan, Essex are two points ahead of the Foxes.

Tom Westley, the hosts’ fifth-highest List A total, came in for the hosts, who batted first at Chelmsford, with 141 balls from 113 balls and 131 from Charlie Atkinson, who also had 113 deliveries.

The third wicket was added by Westley and Atkinson, which was the highest stand ever recorded by the two teams in List A games.

After netting four wickets against Liverpool, Durham is still in contention to qualify for Group B.

Josh Bohannon and George Bell both hit 106 and 104, but Lancashire slightly lost ground when Ben Raine took 4-34 in the final over.

Alex Lees’ 64, which followed, gave the chase a strong start, before Will Rhodes’ 75 and unbeaten 80 from captain Ollie Robinson, who took the match, brought the visitors home.

Hojlund’s Milan hopes fade as Boniface nears loan move

Victor Boniface, the striker for Bayer Leverkusen, is close to completing a loan deal with AC Milan, which could put an end to Rasmus Hojlund’s transfer to the Serie A giants.

Hojlund had been a target for Milan to sign from Manchester United on loan.

The Denmark forward, 22, has stalled on a deal because the negotiating process did not include a purchase requirement.

Similar deals have already been made for Boniface by Milan, but the latter has the option to make the move for the Nigerian a permanent one starting in the summer.

After suffering a thigh injury that could keep him out for up to four months, Napoli are also on the lookout for a number nine.

Hojlund announced earlier this month that, despite having an inconsistent first couple of seasons, he would stay at United.

His organization has since signed Slovenian international Benjamin Sesko for a sum of $ 73.7 million.

Hojlund was then completely dropped from Ruben Amorim’s squad for the Premier League defeat by Arsenal, who had then been rested throughout United’s final pre-season game against Fiorentina.

Jake Paul to face 5ft 5ins Davis in November

On November 14 in Atlanta, Georgia, Jake Paul will face WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis in an exhibition fight.

Due to the significant weight gap between the two men, Davis’ title won’t be in doubt.

Paul’s final fight, against Davis, was against a weight of 135 pounds, while Davis was currently campaigning against him.

YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul has a successful professional boxing career with 12 wins and one defeat. He first gained fame on the Disney Channel and then gained fame as an influencer.

Paul wrote on X, “Yes, he is one of the world’s best pound-for-pound boxers, but my motto is to fight any odds, at any time, anywhere,” Paul said.

According to reports that Paul was in talks with British heavyweight Anthony Joshua, Paul added “first David, then Goliath.”

Eddie Hearn, the promoter of Joshua, recently told BBC Sport that Paul might take Joshua’s place when he recovers from injury in 2026.

In his most recent fight, Paul defeated 39-year-old Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

In November, the 28-year-old defeated 58-year-old Mike Tyson in a unanimous decision.

After drawing with Lamont Roach Jr. in his final contest, Davis won the WBA lightweight title.

In the pound-for-pound rankings released in January, Davis was ranked eighth.

Since making his professional debut in 2020, Paul has made a mission to persuade the boxing community of his prowess.

In 2023, Paul suffered his first defeat against Tommy Fury after defeating a YouTuber, a former NBA player, and three former UFC competitors.

However, Paul and Davis’ weight differences in their previous fights will be minimal in comparison to this fight.

Paul and Davis will both be giving up nine inches in height, while Davis will be standing at 6′ 1″ versus the 5′ 5in “Tank” in a noticeable height difference.

For the exhibition, the contracted weight, the number of rounds, and the gloves’ size have not yet been confirmed.

Given that Tyson was a former world champion, Paul wore bigger 14-ounce gloves and won shorter contests against him.

Similar events occur when Paul’s older brother, Logan, and Floyd Mayweather square off in 2021.
