Six Republican states send 1,100 troops to US capital amid crackdown

In an effort to combat violent crime, Republican-led governors from six Republican-led states are sending hundreds of troops to Washington, DC, strengthening President Donald Trump’s aggressive plan to flood the city with soldiers and federal agents.

Three people with knowledge of the situation told Reuters on Tuesday that the Trump administration has ordered federal prosecutors in Washington, DC, to be more aggressive in prosecuting those accused of being arrested in connection with a crackdown in the country’s capital.

Days after the Republican governors of West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio requested that the Trump administration send troops to Washington, the Republican governors of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee announced on Monday that they would do so.

Trump made the announcement on August 11 that the DC police force would temporarily be governed by the federal government, claiming that 800 members would join the federal DC National Guard to combat what he termed a “crime emergency” (in spite of declining crime in the country’s capital).

Additionally, the FBI and other agencies sent federal agents to patrol the city’s streets. The administration and Mayor Muriel Bowser reached a deal with the city’s attorney general to keep Police Chief Pamela Smith in charge of the department’s operations after the city’s attorney general filed a lawsuit.

Governors of Mississippi and Louisiana both announced on Monday that they had authorized the deployment of 200 Guard personnel to the capital, while governors of Louisiana and Mississippi both announced their approval on Monday. According to local media reports, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has also sent 160 Guard troops to the city.

Governor Landry stated in a post on X that “we cannot allow our cities to be overrun by violence and lawlessness.” “I’m proud to back this effort to restore safety and sanity to Washington, DC, and cities all over our country, including here in Louisiana,” said one supporter.

Days earlier, West Virginia promised 300-400 troops, South Carolina, 200, and Ohio, 150.

More than 1,100 Guard troops have been announced for deployments to Washington overall by the six Republican states.

Despite city data showing a 30% decrease from 2023 to 2024, which has continued to decline, Trump has justified his takeover by citing the city’s high crime rates.

According to a source with knowledge of the investigation who spoke to The Associated Press and was not authorized to discuss an open investigation publicly, the Department of Justice has opened an investigation into whether Washington, DC police officials have falsified crime data.

What federal regulations could have been broken by a potential crime data manipulation, it was unclear at the time.

The mayor’s office declined to comment on the situation.

On Tuesday, The New York Times published its initial report on the investigation. A Metropolitan Police Department commander who was suspected of influencing crime data took paid administrative leave earlier this year, according to NBC Washington.

Federal charges and troops’ maximums were achieved

According to sources who spoke with Reuters on the condition of anonymity, Jonathan Hornok, the head of the criminal division of the Washington, DC, US Attorney’s Office, instructed prosecutors to file as many federal cases as possible against those detained during the sweeps on Monday.

The people who were convicted of federal crimes can receive harsh sentences, so the decision could strain both the court system and raise the stakes for criminal defendants.

US Attorney [Jeanine] Pirro has made it abundantly clear that the current method of doing things is unacceptable in accordance with President Trump’s order to keep DC safe. According to a spokesperson for Pirro’s office on Tuesday, she instructed her staff to charge the highest crime that the law and the evidence support.

The capital has been informed about the National Guard’s armed-making plan in a move that could also raise street tensions. According to a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to reveal the plans and spoke to The AP on the condition of anonymity, it has not received information about when that might occur or where armed Guard members might be stationed in the District.

It would change what the Pentagon and Army have said about the troops’ lack of weapons. In a statement released last week, the Army stated that “weapons are available if needed but will remain in the armoury.”

Kingsley Wilson, a press secretary for the Pentagon, added last week that troops won’t be armed.

The District of Columbia National Guard said troops “may be armed in accordance with their mission and training” in response to questions about whether Guard members in Washington would be armed in the coming days.

The DC Guard’s spokesperson, Maj Melissa Heintz, did not provide more information, saying that their efforts were aimed at protecting the safety of the civilians they served.

Critics claim that the crackdown is “political theater.”

Two months after Trump sent thousands of troops into Los Angeles to halt protests against an immigration crackdown, the National Guard’s extraordinary deployment in Washington, DC comes. Similar takeovers of New York, Chicago, and LA have been threatened by him.

The deployments, according to experts, are in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which generally forbids the use of the National Guard and other branches of the US military in civilian law enforcement.

The deployment, according to critics, is merely performative and is intended to distract from more pressing issues.

The Center for American Progress stated in a statement that the Trump administration’s excessive authority will not make Washington, DC safer. It also poses a risky political theater that threatens democracy in the country’s capital and beyond.

It’s unclear whether the federal takeover has led to more enforcement despite the administration’s insistence that troops are needed to stop crime.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi reported on X on Tuesday that the Trump administration’s operations had been impacted by 465 arrests, or 39 per day on average.

However, according to city statistics, the Metropolitan Police Department made 61 arrests on average per day in 2024.

Vanessa Feltz’s ex Ben Ofoedu ‘urged to stop talking about her by concerned pals’

Before learning of their split in 2023, Ben Ofoedu and presenter Vanessa Feltz had been together for more than ten years. He has since wed someone else.

Friends of Vanessa Feltz’s former fiancé Ben Ofoedu are said to be hoping that he will stop talking about her. It comes following reports that he made a dig at her whilst on his honeymoon after getting married to someone else.

Prior to the announcement of their breakup in 2023, Ben, 53, had been dating Vanessa for more than ten years. He married his current partner, Vanessa Brown, who reportedly has been nicknamed “Vanessa 2.0” by him and shares her first name with her husband’s ex-girlfriend.

A source has told the Express that people around Ben are urging him to stop mentioning his ex. They said: “Some of Ben’s friends wish he’d put a sock in it. It’s a bit pathetic now and seems to be the only way he can get any press attention.”

More than two years after she “threw him out,” the source claimed that he is still talking to Vanessa. They continued, saying, “He continues to keep himself in the public eye by making vicious remarks about her to the media.”

The source continued commenting, telling the outlet that despite his newly wed status, it is going on. The assaults on Vanessa, who has been dating him for 16 years, continue to happen, even though he is newly married.

How must his new wife, who he refers to as “Vanessa 2.0,” be feeling when he constantly complains about his ex? At their wedding, he even conducted interviews with her. This is odd behavior.

Singer Ben has previously expressed his love for his bride amid making comments about his ex, including at his wedding. When Vanessa ended their relationship, he was reportedly filmed telling a reporter: “She was perfect. I have ruined my life with her. I’d do anything to be back with her.”

Ben is believed to have continued to make references to his ex-girlfriend Vanessa, who now hosts her own Channel 5 talk show. Since then, he’s said to have changed his perspective. It is claimed that friends worry that he has too much time to waste.

The outlet explained that Vanessa’s representatives are shocked by her apparent “decisistance to use the star to hang on to the limelight.” His own relatives reportedly love his ex and are horrified by how he “coordinated attacks” her.

Will a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy end the war in Ukraine?

Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy summit is being planned by Donald Trump, according to him.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, arrived at the White House on Monday for a much-anticipated meeting with Donald Trump.

His previous outing earlier this year was widely regarded as a failure because of how heatedly Trump riled the public.

But he also received a lot of support from world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

They received a security guarantee from Washington for Ukraine, which they chose.

In order to reach a long-term peace agreement, Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet next.

What would the terms be, though?

Trisha Paytas auditions for iconic Disney character but fans obsessed with outfit detail

The singer claims that watching clips of a small production gave her some inspiration.

Fans have been diverted by Trisha Paytas’ audition for a Disney stage production despite her attire.

The singer and YouTuber admitted to having watched numerous scenes of a stage show suggested by her ‘For You’ page on TikTok.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a piece of the American theater company’s production, which is currently being performed at West Valley Arts in Utah. According to the venue’s website, the show, which runs until August 30th, takes inspiration from both the Disney animated film and Victor Hugo’s original novel.

Trisha confesses her desire to appear on the show herself, which suggests that sneak peeks of the show have piqued her interest. She also requested that she visit the production in person.

Speaking directly to the camera in the clip, she says: “My entire FYP is this theatre in Utah, West valley it’s called. Shout out Beatriz (Melo), she plays Esmerelda. She captivated me…so I started being like clicking her profile and seeing all the songs she’s ever sang.”, reports OK!.

“Then I started seeing the actor playing the Hunchback, and I think I’d make a great Hunchback for upcoming productions,” said the audition.

She continued, “I don’t know Hunchback that well,” though. I didn’t like it as a child because I probably thought I was too Quasimodo, which I thought was a bad thing then. However, now that I see myself as a Quasimodo, I believe we’re embracing it because we’re embracing it.

She then begins singing one of the show’s songs, but admits she doesn’t understand the words, so she does it karaoke-style.

Her followers overwhelmingly reacted to the video in a slew. She garnered numerous positive reviews for highlighting smaller creators and intimate productions.

The official Twitter account responded, saying: “Trisha, we are honored that you love our theater’s content! Come see Hunchback playing through August 30 and follow us for more!

Marseille duo listed after ‘unacceptable behaviour’

Following last week’s defeat at Rennes, Marseille have added Jonathan Rowe and Adrien Rabiot to their transfer wishlist for “unacceptable behavior.”

After the Ligue 1 game, it was reported that Rowe and Rabiot, both of whom were from France, had a spat.

Despite having 10 men reduced to 10 in the 26th minute, Marseille lost to Roazhon Park with a 1-0 lead.

Rabiot, 30, played the entire 90 minutes while Rowe, 22, was substituted in the 63rd minute. RMC Sport claimed the pair had an altercation after the match.

After the game, Marseille claimed in a statement that the pair’s listing was “made up for unacceptable behavior in the dressing room.”

The statement continued that it had been made in accordance with the club’s internal code of conduct and had been “communicated to the two players by the club on Monday.”

Rowe, an England Under-21 international, signed for Marseille from Norwich for £17 million in August 2024 and has made 31 appearances while scoring three goals.

Rabiot, a former Paris Saint-Germain player, left Juventus for Marseille in September for a free transfer.
