Wissa ‘never gave up’ after acid attack

Yoane Wissa was about to realise a dream by moving to the Premier League.

But in July 2021, a month before he joined Brentford from Lorient, it very nearly turned into a living nightmare.

Wissa was attacked at his home, with acid thrown in his face. He could have lost his sight. It could have ended his career.

A woman was later convicted of the attack, and of attempting to kidnap his daughter, and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

The trauma drove Wissa on.

That was clear when the then Lorient manager, Christophe Pelissier, visited the forward in hospital a day after the assault.

“Even though he was physically and mentally affected, Yoane quickly showed his determination to succeed,” he said.

‘His legacy has been soured’

Such determination has been a constant throughout Wissa’s career.

He was playing in front of crowds of fewer than 3,000 supporters away at Chambly in the French second division back in 2019.

Now he in line to feature against Barcelona in the Champions League next week after completing a protracted £55m move from Brentford to Newcastle United.

His rise has not necessarily come as a shock to Pierre-Yves Hamel, who played alongside Wissa at Lorient.

“After the attack, he never complained,” he said. “He immediately wanted to move forward and to blossom today is a just reward for his efforts.

“Once Yoane has an idea in mind, he will do his utmost to make it happen – no matter how long it takes.”

Those words now carry added meaning.

Wissa was so set on joining Newcastle that he removed all association with Brentford from his Instagram account a few weeks ago.

In a statement last month, Wissa urged Brentford to “keep their word” to let him leave and accused the club of “unduly standing in my way”.

Parallels were drawn with another striker looking to leave their club – Wissa, like Alexander Isak, did not feature in any of his team’s opening three games of the season.

And just as Newcastle fans were upset with the manner in which Isak pushed to join Liverpool, following his own explosive social media post, Brentford supporters were dismayed with Wissa’s conduct as he looked to force a move through to St James’ Park.

Ian Westbrook, who is the Brentford fan writer with BBC Sport, stressed supporters are “not vindictive” towards those who “leave in the right way” because they know that their side “sell players to bigger clubs at the right time”.

The season-ticket holder suggested former players Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard and ex-manager Thomas Frank will all receive good receptions as a result when they return to Gtech Community Stadium following their summer moves.

But it will be different for Wissa.

Newcastle’s shift in transfer policy

Wissa has since addressed the manner of his exit.

In an interview with Newcastle’s in-house media team, he insisted “it was always respectful with all of them so that’s why I kept myself fit, training, going to see the guys, being around every single day and just waiting for the right moment to move”.

And Phil Giles, Brentford’s director of football, made it clear that Wissa was an “infectious character” who he “liked a lot” while attempting to separate the forward’s four years at the club from the circumstances of his departure.

Newcastle certainly did their homework on Wissa.

Head coach Eddie Howe targeted players who were “desperate” to join the club, particularly after strikers Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko and Joao Pedro opted to move elsewhere, and the DR Congo international fitted the bill.

Newcastle, tellingly, returned to the table with a third and final bid on deadline day rather than moving on to an alternative.

It signified a rare shift in transfer policy. In fact, Newcastle had not signed an outfield player over the age of 25 since Howe’s first summer in charge in 2022.

Yet the 29-year-old appears to be a relative late bloomer rather than someone entering the twilight of his career.

Wissa’s year-on-year development has been such he went on to score more non-penalty goals (19) than any other player in the Premier League last season.

Wissa’s record in front of goal, his ability to plug in and his work off the ball made him an attractive proposition for Newcastle, who only had one player hit double figures last season.

That man was Isak.

It will now fall to Wissa, the club’s number nine, and record signing Nick Woltemade to help fill the void left by the Swede.

And Julien Laporte suggested there is more to come from his former Lorient team-mate.

Brazil Supreme Court sentences Bolsonaro for 27 years in coup plot

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison, shortly after a majority of a Supreme Court panel voted to convict him on charges related to an attempted military coup.

On Thursday, four out of five of the justices had found Bolsonaro guilty of trying to illegally retain power after his 2022 electoral defeat to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Justice Carmen Lucia said there was ample evidence that Bolsonaro acted “with the purpose of eroding democracy and institutions”.

A fourth judge, Justice Luiz Fux, broke with his colleagues on Wednesday and voted to acquit the 70-year-old former president of all charges.

Currently under house arrest, Bolsonaro faced up to 40 years in prison after being found guilty on five charges, including leading a “criminal organisation” to conspire to overthrow Lula.

Still, Fux’s vote could invite challenges to the ruling.

Bolsonaro has maintained he will run for president in 2026, despite Brazil’s top electoral court barring him from running in elections until 2030 for spreading unfounded claims about Brazil’s electronic voting system.

The Supreme Court also convicted seven co-conspirators, including former defence minister and Bolsonaro’s 2022 running mate Walter Braga Netto; former Defence Minister Paulo Sergio Nogueira; Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp Mauro Cid; his military adviser Augusto Heleno Ribeiro; former Justice Minister Anderson Torres; former naval chief Almir Garnier Santos; and ex-police officer Alexandre Ramagem.

Reporting from Brasilia, Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman said the sentencing, which was originally scheduled for Friday, was unexpected.

“It’s extremely significant and also a surprise,” she said. “The last of the five justices gave his guilty verdict just a short time ago, and then he and the remaining four had to calculate what the sentence would be.”

“We have to keep very much in mind that this may or may not happen immediately,” she added. “Bolsonaro’s lawyers and that of the other seven co-defendants still have some legal wiggle room here.”

“Apart from that, the supporters of Bolsonaro in Congress have already submitted an amnesty law, hopefully to get Bolsonaro off the hook,” she said.

United States President Donald Trump has called his ally’s trial a “witch-hunt”, hitting Brazil with 50 percent tariffs, imposing sanctions against the presiding judge, Alexandre de Moraes, and revoking visas for most members of Brazil’s high court. Trump said on Thursday that he was very unhappy about Bolsonaro’s conviction.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US would “respond accordingly to this witch-hunt”.

“The political persecutions by sanctioned human rights abuser Alexandre de Moraes continue, as he and others on Brazil’s supreme court have unjustly ruled to imprison former President Jair Bolsonaro,” Rubio said.

Antiestablishment anger

Bolsonaro, a former army captain and paratrooper, became known for his defence of Brazil’s two-decade military dictatorship after being elected to the back benches of Congress in 1990 in the early years of Brazil’s democracy.

He never hid his admiration for the military regime, which killed hundreds of Brazilians from 1964 to 1985.

In one interview, he said Brazil would only change “on the day that we break out in civil war here and do the job that the military regime didn’t do: killing 30,000”. He was referring to leftists and political opponents.

Later, he surfed on mass protests that erupted across Brazil in 2014 during the sprawling “car wash” bribery scandal that implicated hundreds of politicians – including Lula, whose conviction was later annulled.

His antiestablishment anger helped elevate him to the presidency in 2018, and dozens of far-right lawmakers were elected on his coattails, creating roadblocks to Lula’s progressive agenda.

Facing a close re-election campaign against Lula in 2022 – an election Lula went on to win – Bolsonaro’s comments took on an increasingly messianic quality, raising concerns about his willingness to accept the results.

“I have three alternatives for my future: being arrested, killed or victory,” he said in remarks to a meeting of evangelical Christian leaders in 2021. “No man on Earth will threaten me.”

Bolsonaro maintains a solid political base within Brazil, and the verdict is expected to be met with widespread unrest.

Brooklyn Beckham’s ex-girlfriend Lexi Wood opened up about their past romance, revealing they dated for ‘more than a year’ before the aspiring chef met actress Nicola Peltz. Lexi and Brooklyn were first linked when they were spotted kissing in April 2018 after his split from Chloe Grace Moretz.

According to Lexi, she and Brooklyn were together for ‘a long while after’ they were seen together but kept their romance private. In a recent interview, she branded the former aspiring photographer an ‘amazing person’ as she gushed about his ‘amazing’ marriage to socialite Nicola.

She said: “I love that he has moved on to his amazing relationship and marriage. I wish nothing but the best for both of them.”

Lexi went on to reveal she knows Nicola’s brothers, adding to MailOnline: “I have met [them] a couple times and, honestly, from the outside looking in, they’re all amazing.”

Brooklyn’s ex-girlfriend has previously defended the Beckham family after reports first came out about his feud with David and Victiora. Earlier this year, reports claimed Nicola wanted to distance herself from ‘toxic’ David and Victoria.

The Bravo reality star appeared on The Viall Files podcast, where she was asked about dating Brooklyn and Cindy Crawford’s son Presley Gerber.

She said: “It’s so funny because those are the types of families that I’m used to.” Lexi continued: “Like, families that are in the industry, that give each other advice, work with each other where they can, like that are so close, travel together, live together, they do so much together.

“That mindset is that your family has your back, period. I do feel like those families are great.” She was also asked about how it felt dating the son of ‘one of the sexiest men alive’.

Lexi added: “I feel like he was just always Brooklyn’s dad. I feel like immediately, I didn’t think anything of it. And then he just was his dad. They’re a beautiful family. Victoria, she’s the style icon. They’re the coolest family.”

Meanwhile, Brooklyn is still embroiled in a feud with his family. Despite being estranged, Victoria Beckham kept him in her upcoming Netflix documentary, which follows the former Spice Girl’s journey into the fashion and beauty industry.

It was reported that Victoria was adamant that he stays in her show, despite having no contact with him since May.

According to the Daily Mail, one scene that features Brooklyn is when he helps mop up a wet catwalk before the start of Victoria’s show during Paris Fashion Week, after it poured with rain.

It has been reported that Victoria is seen instructing her team and family to muck in an help get her catwalk safe to start the show.

Court Allows First Bank’s Appeal Against GHL

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has set aside the ruling of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, and allowed the appeal filed by First Bank of Nigeria against General Hydrocarbons Limited (GHL).

This came with an order authorising the sale of the crude oil aboard FPSO Tamaru Tokoni, with proceeds to be paid into an interest-high-yielding escrow account and warehoused by the chief registrar of the court, pending the hearing and determination of the case at the trial court or the court of arbitration.

Justice Polycarp Kwahar, who read the lead judgment, also appointed the chief registrar of the Court of Appeal to take charge and possession of the crude oil cargo and to protect the same against dissipation or unauthorised disposition by any party, pending the hearing and the determination of the case of the trial court of arbitration.

Earlier this year, Justice Emmanuel Obile of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, had dismissed First Bank’s suit, which alleged fraudulent subversion of proceeds of sale from the oil cargo, which it said GHL had pleaded as security for a deal.

The judge upheld the preliminary objection filed by GHL and held that the dispute was not a maritime claim but a debt recovery.

GHL Denies Owing $225.8m

First Bank had alleged that GHL owed it $225.8 million in debt.

GHL has, however, denied the claim.

It had also accused the FBN of abusing an ex parte freezing order when it selectively released part of the crude in the FPSO to Conoil and the NNPC.

Israel’s Netanyahu says ‘there will be no Palestinian state’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has officially moved forward with a settlement expansion plan in the occupied West Bank that would make any future Palestinian state virtually impossible.

The Israeli leader signed an agreement on Thursday to move ahead with the project, which would bisect the West Bank.

“We are going to fulfil our promise that there will be no Palestinian state. This place belongs to us,” Netanyahu said at the event in Maale Adumim, an Israeli settlement just east of Jerusalem.

“We are going to double the city’s population.”

The settlement, on a 12sq-km (4.6sq-mile) tract of land east of Jerusalem, is known as “East 1” or “E1”.

The development plan, which includes 3,400 new homes for Israeli settlers, would cut off much of the West Bank from occupied East Jerusalem while linking up thousands of Israeli settlements in the area.

East Jerusalem carries particular significance to Palestinians as their choice for the capital of a future Palestinian state.

All Israeli settlements in the West Bank, occupied since 1967, are considered illegal under international law, regardless of whether they have Israeli planning permission.

Reporting for Al Jazeera from Amman, Jordan, because Israel has banned Al Jazeera from the West Bank and Israel, Hamdah Salhut explained that this expansion is controversial because it destroys any territorial continuity from the West Bank to East Jerusalem, further dismantling any possibility that there could be a Palestinian state in the future.

Palestinian leaders push back

Palestinian Authority presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh on Thursday insisted that a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital is the key to peace in the region. He called it and the two-state solution “inevitable” despite Netanyahu’s move.

Rudeineh condemned Israeli settlements as illegal under international law and accused Netanyahu of “pushing the entire region towards the abyss”.

He noted that 149 United Nations member states have already recognised Palestine and called on all countries that have not yet done so to recognise a Palestinian state immediately.

How did we get here?

Netanyahu has long championed settlements in occupied Palestinian territory and fought any efforts towards peace between Israel and Palestine. He railed against the signing of the Oslo Accords, two agreements in the 1990s between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization that many hoped would lead to the creation of a Palestinian state.

“I de facto put an end to the Oslo Accords,” Netanyahu was caught on video boasting in 2001.

In 1997 during his first term as prime minister, Netanyahu helped establish the settlement of Har Homa in East Jerusalem, CNN reported. He added in an interview with the Israeli news site NRG that a Palestinian state would never be formed while he was in office.

More recently, far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said settlements such as E1 will help erase Palestine from the map, even as Palestinian statehood gains increasing recognition from UN member states.

“This reality finally buries the idea of a Palestinian state because there is nothing to recognise and no one to recognise,” Smotrich said.

The UN General Assembly demanded in September 2024 that Israel end its presence in the West Bank by withdrawing its military, immediately stopping work on new settlements and evacuating settlers from occupied land.

More than 100 nations voted for the resolution. Fourteen voted against.

The vote followed an advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice in July 2024 that said Israel’s continued presence in occupied territory was unlawful and Israel was “under an obligation to cease immediately all new settlement activities and to evacuate all settlers from the occupied Palestinian Territory”.

Netanyahu called the opinion a “decision of lies”.

More recently, 21 countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan, condemned Israel’s plan to build its new settlement.

Germany announced on Thursday that it will back a France-led proposal for a two-state solution, the Bloomberg news agency reported. Berlin is planning to support a UN resolution this week to adopt the New York Declaration, led by France and Saudi Arabia and calling for the creation of a Palestinian state and a right to return for refugees.

Belgium, France and Malta have pledged to recognise a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly session this month. Other countries, including Australia, Canada and the UK, have announced conditional recognitions, but it has remained unclear whether they will do so at the gathering.

The situation in the West Bank and Gaza

The settlement expansion news comes amid escalating violence.

On Monday, six people were killed in a shooting attack in Jerusalem when two Palestinian gunmen attacked a bus stop at the Ramot Junction. Several others were wounded.

Israeli forces responded by storming towns and demolishing the homes of the Palestinian suspects in the West Bank.

Al Jazeera reported on Thursday that nearly 100 men were arrested in Tulkarem in the West Bank. The arrests came after an attack that “lightly wounded two soldiers,” Haaretz reported, quoting the Israeli army.

Leeds (0) 8

Tries: Hall, Croft

Catalans (8) 16

Leeds Rhinos were denied a sixth successive Super League victory by Catalans Dragons in their penultimate game of the regular season.

Already guaranteed a play-off place, Leeds had not conceded any points in their previous two fixtures but trailed 8-0 at the interval.

Dragons hooker Ugo Tison evaded a tackler to score the opening try from close range, with Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet converting and then adding penalties either side of half-time.

Reduced to 12 men for 10 minutes when prop Romain Navarrete was yellow-carded for a high tackle, Catalans’ defiant defence was eventually breached when Ryan Hall gathered Brodie Croft’s lofted kick to touch down in the corner.

Morgan Gannon came close to a second Leeds score but his darting run was halted just under the posts by Catalans’ England international winger Tommy Makinson.

Shortly afterwards, the visitors reacted quickest to Luke Keary’s drop-goal attempt coming back off the upright and Julian Bousquet touched down for the decisive try.

Leeds would have moved level on points with second-placed Wigan, the team they face in their final regular season fixture on 19 September, if they had beaten Catalans.

But Leeds’ defeat means the Warriors will wrap up a top-two finish – earning them a week’s break and a home semi-final – if they win one of their two remaining fixtures.

The Rhinos will be certain to finish in the top four if fifth-placed St Helens fail to beat fourth-placed Leigh on Friday, with such an outcome securing a home tie for Brad Arthur’s team in the first week of the play-offs at the very least.

Catalans head coach Joel Tomkins told BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra:

“That’s one of the bravest performances I’ve been involved with as a player or a coach.

“We were absolutely busted, we had players who played injured tonight. Bayley Sironen pulled his hamstring after 15 minutes.

Leeds: Miller; Hall, Newman, Simpson, Hankinson; Croft, Sinfield; Oledzki, O’Connor, Jenkins, Gannon, McDonnell, Palasia.

Interchanges: Watkins, Bentley, Lisone, Holroyd.

Catalans: Aispuro-Bichet; Makinson, Cotric, Smith, Yaha; Keary, Fages; Dezaria, Tison, Navarrete, Sims, Sironen, Garcia.

Interchanges: Bousquet, Satae, Seguier, Zenon.
