‘Not a project’ – Postecoglou can’t ‘waste time’ in Forest rebrand

Getty Images

Nottingham Forest head coach Ange Postecoglou says he “cannot afford to waste time” as he seeks to implement a new style of play at the club.

The Australian’s first game in charge ended in an emphatic defeat with a 3-0 loss away at Arsenal.

The 60-year-old was appointed as Nuno Espirito Santo’s successor on Wednesday and vowed to build a side in his image.

While there was evidence of stylistic changes against Arsenal, Forest managed just one shot on target against the Gunners and registered a lower expected goals (xG) than in any game Premier League match under Nuno.

Asked how long it will take until we see a Forest side playing in his image, Postecoglou said: “Wednesday mate (against Swansea). I can’t afford to waste time, this is not a project.

“I’m not going to let it take long, we’ve got an unbelievable opportunity to make an impact.”

Martin Zubimendi, a £50m summer signing from Real Sociedad, scored either side of an effort from Sweden striker Viktor Gyokeres to move Arsenal to the top of the table.

“Losing 3-0 is tough to take but it’s the first game under the new manager and there are a few positives to build on,” the midfielder told TNT Sports.

“We only had one session together so it was tough to put things into the game but I’m sure more will come.

“Postecoglou said in the changing room just to trust him and we’ll get back on the training ground and look at things, ideas we can improve on – we’re all focused.

“We’ve got the players in the changing room to do what he wants to do so we all just need to believe in it, put things into practice and we’re positive it’ll pay off.”

Forest finished seventh under Nuno last term, earning the club a place in the Europa League after Crystal Palace’s demotion.

“To consider the fact it was only a couple of years ago that they were in the Championship and it’s been 20-something years since they were last in the Premier League, now they’re going to be playing in Europe,” former Man City defender Nedum Onuoha told Final Score.

“You’re talking about a side who are openly trying to win trophies at this level, it’s a good time to be a Forest fan but you hope for Postecoglou’s reign it doesn’t feel too extreme in terms of the change.

‘Postecoglou’s tactical impact was clear’

Postecoglou’s first game in charge of Nottingham Forest has to be assessed in a measured fashion given he is one week into the job and facing an Arsenal side almost six years into their project.

The Australian has had limited time to put his stamp on this Forest side but a few differences were evident pointing to the direction Postecoglou might look to take Forest.

The most obvious was starting with a back four. It appears the 4-4-1-1 that Postecoglou has deployed across his career is to be maintained.

Stylistically, Forest aimed to build in a slower fashion – looking to establish territory higher up the pitch, rather than playing the more direct, counter-attacking style that was successful last season. Data from Opta showed that their ‘direct speed’ – how quickly they move the ball from defence to attack – was their joint-lowest for a game in the league since the start of last season.

Out of possession, they set up in what looked like a 4-2-3-1 shape and defended in a man-marking fashion. We will have to see more from Postecoglou to know if this man-to-man approach defensively is something they persist with or if this was specific to Arsenal given their quality and rotation-heavy style.

Nuno by comparison tended to set Forest up in a zonal fashion (meaning each player defended specific zones, rather than following individual players) but did use a man-to-man defence at times against the league’s top teams.

Forest’s defensive line was set higher up the pitch than under Nuno, but they were punished for this with Gyokeres’ strike. Arsenal exploited a long pass over the top of the defence for Eze to run on to as Forest failed to apply pressure on the passer. Naturally, Forest’s collective understanding of when to push up and apply pressure will improve with time.

Lastly, the biggest difference between Postecoglou’s tactics today with how he has set up his teams at previous clubs was the use of full-backs. In build-up, Forest played in a fairly standard 4-3-3 shape with full-backs starting in wide positions rather than inverting into midfield as has been the norm in his sides. Was this a short-term tactic given the lack of preparation time?

Women’s Rugby World Cup – quarter-final

Canada (31) 46

Tries: Hogan-Rochester, Corrigan 2, De Goede, Hunt, Forteza, Paquin Cons: De Goede 4 Pen: Tessier

Australia (5) 5

Canada set out their case as Women’s World Cup contenders and set up a mouth-watering semi-final with holders New Zealand as they ruthlessly demolished Australia in Bristol.

The world number two side, who crowdfunded their tournament preparations with a charity drive entitled ‘Mission: Win Rugby World Cup’, were irresistible in the first half, crossing five times.

Australia, who led England for the first half-hour of last weekend’s pool-stage match in Brighton, were behind after only two minutes as flanker Caroline Crossley cantered through out wide and wing Asia Hogan-Rochester took advantage to race in unopposed.

Canada racked up the fastest average ruck speed of any team in the pool stage and their relentless tempo denied their opponents, coached by former England captain Jo Yapp, any chance to set themselves in defence.

The excellent Sophie de Goede, back from a serious knee injury earlier this year, combined with Crossley and centre Florence Symonds before wing Alysha Corrigan stretched out to produce a superb one-handed dot-down on 13 minutes.

De Goede strolled in around the fringe and Corrigan got her second, before prop McKinley Hunt marched over for a fifth Canada try just before half-time as a well-worked line-out move gave her pack momentum.

Australia had only Desiree Miller’s early breakaway to show for their first-half efforts as they headed down the tunnel 31-5 down.

The deficit could have been even deeper, with Canada twice knocking on as they attempted to ground the ball over the line.

Flanker Karen Paquin scooted in late on to take Canada past the winning margin England had amassed against Australia in Brighton last weekend.

Canada have reached the Women’s World Cup final only once, losing to England in 2014 on the most recent occasion the Red Roses lifted the trophy.

With England on the opposite side of the draw, the two would only meet in the title decider this time around. This Canada team are well capable of taking revenge.

Line-ups

Canada: Schell; Corrigan, Symonds, Tessier (c), Hogan-Rochester; Perry, Pelletier; Hunt, Tuttosi, Menin, De Goede, O’Donnell, Crossley, Paquin, Forteza.

Replacements: Boag, Kassil, DeMerchant, Beukeboom, Royer, Senft, Apps, Seumanutafa.

Australia: Halse; Stewart, Friedrichs, Smith, Miller; Moleka, Wood; Kavoa, Talakai Karpani, Leaney, Leonard, Duck, Chancellor, Palu (c).

Reality TV star Olivia Attwood has made light of her incredibly busy work schedule after a hectic couple of weeks.

The former Love Island star, 34, has been non-stop over the past week as she launched the brand-new season of her hit ITV2 reality show, Bad Boyfriends, attended and presented an award at The National Television Awards, and launched her own collection of clothing with high-street giant River Island.

Throughout the chaos of her incredibly busy work schedule this week, Olivia has also faced more scrutiny about her marriage with Bradley Dack, 31, after he failed to accompany her to the National Television Awards on Wednesday night ,after Olivia confessed that they have both ‘messed up’ and admitted that their relationship has faced ‘challenges’ over the past six months.

Olivia and Bradley did, however, put on a strong united front when the football ace showed up to support her on Thursday night at the launch of her new edit with River Island.

Taking to her Instagram stories on Friday, Olivia poked fun at how crazy her life has been of late as she shared a number of light-hearted work-related posts. In one image, Olivia proved that she was working hard late into the evening as she shared a glimpse of one of her new projects.

Alongside a glimpse of a photoshoot, Olivia wrote: “What even is a day off?”. She then shared another look at the photoshoot as she posted the time on her snap. The former Love Island star proved that she was working late into the evening on Friday as she continues to keep on top of her hectic schedule.

However, it seems like it all took a toll on Olivia, who then posted a video of herself passed out asleep while on set. The blonde beauty could be seen snoozing while wearing a full face of glamorous makeup. “As you can tell, it’s been a very long week,” she wrote alongside the video.

It comes after Olivia was forced to defend her marriage after her recent trip to Ibiza with friend Pete Wicks. The former TOWIE star, 36, sparked controversy when he was seen cuddling up to Olivia on a yacht as they soaked up the sun on their Ibiza getaway.

During a recent appearance on ITV’s Lorraine, Olivia set the record straight on her and Bradley’s marriage. She also addressed the infidelity in their early relationship after she found out that Brad had been unfaithful in the early days of their relationship, before the pair rekindled.

“Look, Brad and I had a rocky start. There’s no such thing as perfect, our relationships has ups and downs for sure it’s a collaborative thing, it’s a work in progress,” Olivia said.

“It’s not something I would recommend to everyone to forgive [cheating] and move on. It worked for us, I’d never gone back to an ex before, I never thought I would, but Brad was the exception! In some cases, it can work. The maturity. We were like 20, 21, when me went. He was silly in the beginning, I was silly. You grow up together and learn how to behave.”

When Lorraine mentioned that due to Olivia’s fame, she can be very easily ‘photographed with someone’ and have it go viral, the presenter seemed to take it all in her stride. She said: “I don’t spend time looking at news outlets, or gossip columns. They have a job to do, I’ve got a job to do. It’s part of the job. You’d drive yourself crazy! Look at something else.”

Olivia also admitted that she understands why her husband Bradley was “upset” over her Ibiza photos with Pete. Last week, she made it clear that she and Bradley are very much together, and her connection with Pete is purely friendly and professional.

Reflecting on the controversy, Olivia said both she and Bradley are determined to work through what she calls “difficult times” caused by their busy schedules.

“Me and Brad never pretend to have a perfect relationship, we have been up, down, left, backwards, and the last six months have been really challenging for us,” she told Mail Online.

“My work and his work take precedence over everything, we have to navigate our relationship all the time. It’s the boring side of being an adult in a long-term relationship, we constantly have to work at it and that’s just the truth.”

Vingegaard closes on Vuelta win, Pidcock set for podium

Getty Images

Jonas Vingegaard closed in on his first Vuelta a Espana title as he powered to victory in stage 20 while Britain’s Tom Pidcock tightened his grip on a first Grand Tour podium finish.

Denmark’s Vingegaard, 28, sped away in the final kilometre on the gruelling climb up the Bola del Mundo mountain to finish 11 seconds in front of team-mate Sepp Kuss, the 2023 winner.

Victory for Vingegaard extends his general classification lead over Portugal’s Joao Almeida to one minute and 16 seconds before Sunday’s ceremonial final stage in Madrid.

Pidcock, 26, finished fourth. It means that in the overall standings, he is 30 seconds in front of fourth-placed Jai Hindley, all but ensuring his place on Sunday’s podium.

It is a mark of success for the Olympic and former world mountain bike champion in his first Grand Tour where he has prioritised the general classification over stage wins.

“I’m pretty proud of myself. It’s definitely the biggest performance of my career,” said Pidcock.

“It’s maybe not the biggest win – others are more special – but I’m exhausted, to be honest, and I can’t really find any words.”

Earlier in the race, Pro-Palestinian protesters attempted to block the road around 20 kilometres from the finish.

Cyclists were quickly diverted around a group of about 50 protesters and the race was able to continue without significant disruption.

Race organisers had announced the the 21st and final stage of the Vuelta would be shortened from 111.6km to 103.6km.

Organisers did not specify a reason for the section removed, which would have crossed the plush Madrid neighbourhood of Aravaca.

There have been various protests against the Israel-Premier Tech team throughout the race, forcing stages to be shortened.

Riders have crashed as a result of the protests, with some saying they have been worried for their safety.

Last week, Israel-Premier Tech began racing in modified jerseys which did not display their team name.

The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

Scandinavia gives O’Brien historic St Leger victory

PA Media

Aidan O’Brien became the first trainer in modern history to claim three consecutive winners of the St Leger as Scandinavia clinched victory by a neck.

Jockey Tom Marquand steered home the 2-1 favourite in a thrilling finish, holding off a late charge for 14-1 chance Rahiebb on the line.

O’Brien’s Stay True was third while Derby winner Lambourn, the Irish trainer’s final horse home in the seven-strong field, faded to finish fourth.

For Marquand it was a sweet triumph in front of a packed crowd at Doncaster after his previous win in 2020 came during Covid restrictions.

“It’s nice winning a St Leger with a few people here as well – it was a bit quiet last time,” Marquand told ITV Sport after helping clinch a ninth winner in total for O’Brien in the fifth and final Classic of the Flat season.

Scandinavia’s latest St Leger victory for O’Brien follows Jan Brueghel last year and Continuous in 2023.

Only four trainers have completed three consecutive victories in the race’s 249-year history, with St Leger’s most successful trainer, John Scott, the last to do it, claiming four in a row between 1838 and 1841.

Lambourn had been heavily backed in the run-up to the world’s oldest Classic as the first Derby winner to take part in the St Leger since Camelot in 2012.

The 11-4 second favourite had followed up the Derby win by clinching the Irish Derby, but it was Scandanavia who lived up to the billing after back-to-back wins at the Bahrain Trophy and Goodwood in his past two starts.

“He has got the most beautiful temperament,” added Marquand.

“He is just so straightforward and was so tough there. The [soft] ground was hard work but he fended them all off.

“He’s an extra-special horse and one I am privileged to sit on today.”

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi; the Secretary to the State Government; the Head of the Civil Service; the Executive Assistant and Chief Delivery Advisor; Honourable Commissioners; and Special Advisers.

“Under this emergency, medical facilities across the state will be further upgraded, while the recruitment portal for healthcare workers has been reopened,” Umanah explained.

“We are engaging 2,000 healthcare workers, and the requirement for voters’ identity card numbers has been waived for applicants.”

The Commissioner added that the Exco, presided over by Governor Umo Eno, also mandated reforms in medical training.

“The council directed the upgrading of health training institutions, enrollment and training of health professionals, as well as the engagement of retired but willing medical personnel on a contract basis,” he said.

To ensure smooth implementation, the government announced the constitution of an Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee, drawing membership from relevant ministries and agencies.

Meanwhile, the Exco also approved a supplementary budget proposal of ₦695 billion, raising the 2025 budget size to ₦1.65 trillion. Of this, ₦125.6 billion is earmarked for recurrent expenditure, while ₦569.3 billion is allocated for capital expenditure.
