Israel attempts to oust Gaza City residents through continuous bombing

Israeli forces have ramped up attacks on Gaza City, systematically levelling buildings, including United Nations schools sheltering refugees, to force 900,000 residents to make the dangerous journey south to the overcrowded “safe zone” of the al-Mawasi camp.

The Israeli military continued its scorched-earth campaign on Saturday, launching strikes in rapid succession in a bid to clear the area for takeover, and dropping leaflets warning starving and terrified Palestinians to flee for their lives.

Reporting from Gaza City, Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud said that fighter jets were dropping bombs “every 10 to 15 minutes” on residential buildings and public facilities, often failing to give people sufficient time to evacuate to safety.

“The pace and pattern of the attacks suggest one thing: The Israeli army is deliberately putting extreme pressure on places that are densely populated with displaced families,” he said, adding that displaced people were now concentrated in the city’s western flank.

But, he added, even as the army pummels the city, many residents are staying put or even returning after attempting the journey south to the “crammed and under-resourced” al-Mawasi, where Israel has been frequently striking shelters.

Dr Muhammad Abu Salmiya, the head of al-Shifa Hospital, said residents were moving from the east to the west of Gaza City, but “only a small number of people have been able to reach the south”.

“Even those who manage to flee south often find no place to stay, as the al-Mawasi area is completely full and Deir el-Balah is also overcrowded,” said Abu Salmiya, adding that many have returned to Gaza City after failing to find shelter or basic services.

The Israeli army claimed on X that more than 250,000 people had fled the enclave’s largest urban centre.

At least 49 people were killed in Gaza City on Saturday.

Reverse displacement

Reporting from the south, Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary witnessed a steady stream of families arriving from the north to the al-Mawasi camp, believing that they were going to find “water, hygiene – everything that Israeli forces advertised”.

Three of the Israeli-backed GHF aid distribution sites are located in the al-Mawasi area, as part of Israel’s strategy to lure Palestinians southwards. However, human rights groups and governments have harshly criticised the GHF after more than 850 people were shot in the vicinity of distribution sites, according to United Nations figures.

Faraj Ashour, a displaced Palestinian who lost his legs in an Israeli attack, told Al Jazeera that he would be sending his 13-year-old son “to his death” if he dispatched him to find food for the family.

Al-Mawasi was already crowded before Israel’s invasion of Gaza City, filled with Palestinians displaced from the eastern parts of Rafah and Khan Younis. But now, it is at breaking point, with new arrivals unable to find space to pitch their tents.

“I went to al-Mawasi, but the costs were too high… and it was almost impossible to find a proper spot without paying extra,” said Ashour. “We stayed two days. During that time, the tent next to us was bombed even in what they call a safe zone.”

Having travelled from Gaza City, Ashour is now preparing with his family to move back, as part of an apparent trend of reverse displacement, where desperate people return to the north.

“There was no safety. It’s all lies. At first, I believed them, but I realised it was better to return to Gaza City. If they’re going to kill me, may as well be in Gaza City, rather than risk everything in al-Mawasi,” he said.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said on Saturday that 86 percent of Gaza is either a militarised zone or subjected to displacement threats.

Dozens of Palestinians killed

At least 62 Palestinians have been killed across the war-battered Strip since dawn.

The bulk of attacks have been focused on Gaza City, where fighter jets bombed three UN schools in the Shati refugee camp, which were sheltering displaced Palestinians.

“People who once lived in apartments are now seeking shelter in packed schools. They are the last refuge for many families. Yet they get attacked and are forced onto the street without a clear path of where to go,” said Al Jazeera’s Mahmoud.

For the past few weeks, the Israeli military has levelled Gaza City’s high-rise towers one by one, repeatedly claiming the buildings are being used by Hamas, without providing any evidence.

On Saturday, Israeli forces continued to target high-rise towers, with Minister of Defence Israel Katz posting a video purporting to show the Burj al-Nur tower crumbling to the ground.

Al Jazeera Arabic reported that three Israeli air strikes targeted the public prosecution building, southwest of Gaza City.

Several Palestinians in Gaza City were also injured after a suicide drone attacked an outdoor dining hall, which was used as a charging point for phones, laptops and lights.

Outside Gaza City, seven of the dead were hungry Palestinians killed while seeking aid in al-Wadi, in the central Gaza Strip.

Al Jazeera Arabic reported an Israeli artillery attack on central Gaza’s Bureij camp that killed at least one person.

Hospital sources say four people were killed in a strike on a tent sheltering displaced people at Palestine Stadium in central Gaza.

Three Palestinians were killed in an Israeli attack on the al-Amal neighborhood, northwest of Khan Younis.

The Palestine Red Crescent field hospital said that five Palestinians were wounded in an Israeli drone strike on a displaced people’s tent in Khan Younis.

Travis Kelce’s sister reveals why she didn’t congratulate Taylor Swift on engagement

Kylie Kelce has opened up on why she decided against speaking out publicly about brother-in-law Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s engagement

Taylor Swift’s future sister-in-law failed to congratulate the pop superstar on her engagement to Travis Kelce, but has now explained her reasoning. The Shake It Off songstress and her NFL tight-end fiancé revealed last month that they are set to marry, leaving many across the globe sending them well wishes.

However, Travis’ sister, Kylie Kelce, wasn’t among them. And now the wife of Travis’ brother, Jason Kelce, has revealed it was a “conscious” decision.

Speaking on an episode of her ‘Not Gonna Lie’ podcast, she explained: “I have made a very conscious effort to not discuss Taylor and Travis on this podcast because news outlets, tabloids, and AI, quite frankly, like to post only the quotes that they grab from whatever I say in reference to them.”

She went on: “And here’s where I think there is a disconnect. People do not realise that you at home, you have your family. And in your family, you might have a brother-in-law, and they might be dating someone. You might have a soon-to-be sister-in-law.

“But you have a relationship personally with them that no one else is involved in because it’s your relationship. And so I don’t need to come out here and make statements when I already talked to them. You see what I’m saying? “

She went on to admit she thinks it “goes without being said” that she is thrilled for the pair. “I am so incredibly happy for them. We are so excited that they are taking this next step.

“The girls [daughters Wyatt, Elliotte, and Bennett] are so excited to get another aunt. I am so truly happy for them, and I feel grateful that we get to welcome Taylor into our family in a more official capacity.”

However, she said that is their “private relationship,” meaning she doesn’t need to discuss it in the open. She admitted she can simply just text the pair with her messages rather than air it on her podcast.

Travis and Taylor announced their good news in August, two years after going public with their relationship. Their power relationship began in the summer of 2023 after the sports star attended Swift’s Eras Tour concert in Kansas City.

On his podcast at the time, the 35-year-old revealed that he had tried to give Taylor, also 35, a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it, but was unsuccessful in actually meeting her.

However, after talking privately the pair grew closer. And two years on, they released a joint statement to share their engagement news.

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” they said on social media. They also posted a TNT emoji.

In one sweet snap in the announcement, Taylor was seen crying as she hugged her now fiancé. For the proposal, Travis got down on one knee, surrounded by stunning flowers in a garden.

Vitality Blast final, Edgbaston

Hampshire 194-6 (20 overs): Albert 85, Vince 52; Ball 2-39

Somerset 195-4 (19 overs): Smeed 94; Currie 2-44

Somerset win by six wickets

Somerset chased a record-breaking 195 to beat Hampshire Hawks and win their third T20 Blast title.

Will Smeed’s magnificent 94 off 58 balls formed the backbone of Somerset’s innings, while Sean Dickson weighed in with a crucial 33 not out.

Smeed fell at the start of the 19th over with 18 still needed, but captain Lewis Gregory came in and struck two sixes to take Somerset to 195-4 – the highest score in a final.

After Chris Lynn’s blistering century in the semi-final, Hampshire impressed with the bat again making 194-6.

Toby Albert became the competition’s leading run-scorer this season with 85 off 48 deliveries but Hampshire were denied a fourth Blast trophy thanks to Smeed’s wonderful knock.

Somerset bounce back

Somerset can now proudly claim to be the team to beat in T20 cricket in England having made three finals in a row, winning two of them.

Following their 2023 victory over Essex it was a different story last season as they suffered an eight-wicket thrashing at the hands of Gloucestershire.

They appeared to be struggling to keep up with the required run-rate of almost 10 per over this time around before Smeed and Dickson turned the game on its head with a fourth-wicket stand of 88.

Smeed and Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who made an outstanding 81 in their semi-final win over Lancashire, had got Somerset off to a lightning start, taking them to 46-0 in the fifth over when Kohler-Cadmore was bowled by Sonny Baker’s rapid yorker.

On a day where 44 sixes were struck, Kohler-Cadmore hit the biggest of them all when he swiped Chris Wood over the Eric Hollies Stand.

But a couple of overs later he was gone as young England paceman Baker yorked him with an 88mph beauty.

At 89-3 in the 10th over, the game was in the balance but Smeed continued to find boundaries, hitting 14 fours and a six in total.

Perhaps the crucial moment came in the 14th over when Scott Currie dropped Dickson on the boundary with the required run-rate above 12 an over.

Smeed chipped Currie to James Vince on the long-off boundary six short of a deserved century to give Hampshire hope before Gregory ended it in the same over with a four and a couple of leg-side sixes.

“The ball seems to fly here especially under the lights and the dew comes in so we always knew we had a chance,” Smeed told BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra.

“It was some proper hitting from Lewis [Gregory] at the end there as well.

“The guys have been unbelievable in the whole competition, different people have stood up in different games.

Albert stars in losing cause

Toby Albert battingReuters

It was fitting that 23-year-old Albert, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season for Hampshire, starred in the final albeit in a losing cause.

The Basingstoke-born wicketkeeper has played in all of Hampshire’s 17 matches up to the final, scoring 633 runs at an average of just under 50.

Vince, who has featured in every one of Hampshire’s 11 Finals Day appearances, also went past 500 runs for the season and looked hugely disappointed when he was caught on the boundary after making 52.

Albert combined pure power in smashing two huge leg-side sixes with some incredible reverse flicks to the rope off the pace bowlers.

He looked on course to become the second Hampshire batter to score a century on Finals Day following Lynn’s heroics in the semi-final win over Northants but was bowled by Gregory while backing away.

However, his second-wicket stand of 97 with captain Vince following the early dismissal of a fatigued Lynn set Hampshire up for a record-equalling score of 194 in a final – matching the 194-2 made by Northants against Surrey in 2013.

‘We did it the hard way again’ – reaction

Somerset captain Lewis Gregory told BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra:

“Unbelievable, super chuffed for the boys, we did it the hard way again [after taking 19 off the final over to beat Birmingham in the quarter-finals].

“It’s great to be part of this team. Year in, year out we’re challenging for this trophy and to get over the line is mighty special.

“It’s much easier out there than to be watching, I guess you’re in control of things. When you’re watching, you’re wishing the lads to smash a few out of the park and to do it is an amazing feeling.

Hampshire head coach Adrian Birrell told BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra:

“I thought we did quite well to get to 194. Toby Albert and James Vince were outstanding then we had a little bit of a cameo at the back from Benny Howell, so you kind of think at halfway you’ve got a score and then for a long time during that innings we were in the game but we couldn’t quite just peg them back.

“Every over and boundary they were getting, I don’t think we executed that well.

“It was quite difficult to defend here with the outfield being so slick with the dew that had come in. A bowler going down in Chris Wood didn’t help either but we weren’t quite on it with our execution and that hurt us.

“They batted very, very well. Will Smeed played a match-winning innings in a final and all credit to him.

Sarah Cawood shares Zoe Ball’s supportive message after heartbreaking confession

Sarah Cawood drew praise and support after she shared a heartbreaking post about feeling lost in middle age – and has now shared how Zoe Ball offered to help her

Sarah Cawood has opened up about the reaction she received while expressing her fear her life had hit a dead end – including a supportive message from TV and radio star Zoe Ball.

TV fans will know Sarah as an icon of the 1990s when she hosted a range of smash shows including Top of the Pops, Live and Kicking, and the MTV dating show Singled Out. The 53-year-old mum-of-two won support last week when she opened up on social media and shared her fear her career had peaked.

In a searingly honest post, she wrote: “Can I be really honest? For a minute? I’m 53, I’m healthy and I have a lovely family… But I feel lost.’

She explained: “I made the mistake of doom-scrolling this morning and all my former peers are just SLAYING it… it’s hard to explain, but I just feel really…left out. It’s so silly to say that at 53, I feel jealous.”

She continued: “All my former TV buddies, plus new friends I’ve met here and they all seem to be at events with each other, working together and THRIVING. And here’s the thing: I couldn’t be more pleased or proud of those women but I miss them… and I miss being one of them.”

She then went on to explain the mundane household chores that she spends much of her days conducting, and expressed a concern that she is not earning enough money.

She went on: “I just feel so redundant. I want to build my own brand; maybe write a book using my old diaries, but I simply don’t have time: unless my time is spent on income-producing activities, I can’t do them: I’d work 24 hours a day and see no one.”

She went on to explain she had decided to share her feelings as an offer of support to others who may feel the same way. And added: “I HAD my time, and it was GREAT. So maybe I should just shut up and be grateful (I AM grateful I really am! My life is so lovely and I’m so lucky, I just want a little bit more: is that greedy?) Maybe the Universe has a different plan for me.”

 Zoe Ball

The post drew hundreds of messages of support from followers – including Zoe Ball. In a column for The Sun, Sarah revealed: “I’ve always admired Zoe for the way she’s at the top of her game but still remains down-to-earth and one of us.

“Even though I worked with her friend Sara Cox on Channel 4’s The Girlie Show back in the 1990s – and have also presented Live & Kicking and Top of the Pops – I think we’ve only met in person once or twice.

She and Coxy hung out with the dance crowd back in the day but I was an indie girl, so our social circles didn’t really cross.”

She went on to reveal: “When I got breast cancer a few years ago, she sent me a beautiful DM. While I’d love to take up her offer and sit down for a natter, I don’t want to be that person who forces themselves on someone being kind.”

Zoe’s original post stated: “Oh darling S it’s not always as it may look from out there i promise. don’t be sad – although a good weep is such a good outlet and a must. if you ever want a cuppa.”

To which Sarah replied: “Thanks ZoZo! You are honestly one in a bloody million: treading that line between being on the telly and also, just like us! And we all love you for it! May take you up on that offer: just for a Ball Cuddle!”

Queen City Championship third round leaderboard

England’s Charley Hull will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Queen City Championship as she seeks her third LPGA Tour title.

The 29-year-old carded a five-under round of 67, including six birdies and one bogey, to move top on 16 under overall, one stroke ahead of Thailand’s Atthaya Thitikul in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Japanese pair Chisato Iwai and Miyu Yamashita are joint third on 14 under, while American two-time major winner Nelly Korda and England’s Lottie Woad are also in contention on 13 and 12 under respectively.

Hull hit an impressive seven-under 65 in round two to move up the leaderboard and backed it up with another assured performance on Saturday.

A bogey on the par-three fifth was her only blemish, with four birdies on the back nine helping her take the lead.

Hull has finished runner-up in her last two tournaments, including at last week’s Houston Championship, which was her first appearance since sustaining ankle ligament damage after slipping in a car park in August.
