Newcastle name Forest’s Wilson as sporting director

Newcastle United have appointed Nottingham Forest’s chief football officer Ross Wilson as sporting director.

Wilson replaces Paul Mitchell, who lasted less than 12 months with the Magpies having taken over from Dan Ashworth.

Under Wilson, Forest broke their transfer record several times, with Omari Hutchinson’s £37.5m move from Ipswich this summer their biggest outlay.

Wilson was previously sporting director at Rangers and director of football operations at Southampton.

He said: “Newcastle is such a special club, and I fully understand the passion, ambition and expectations of our incredible supporters.

‘Wilson to plan for the long term’

Magpies boss Howe was just a couple of days into an end-of-season break when the Newcastle head coach’s phone “exploded” last summer.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell had just announced he was departing.

While there were initial tensions between the pair, Howe was the first to recognise that such a figure “protects the manager from a lot of things”.

That is why the arrival of Ross Wilson is so significant for Newcastle.

Rather than rushing into the appointment – despite the need for a sporting director during a draining transfer window – Newcastle have been keen to recruit the right person.

In Wilson, who already has a good relationship with Howe, they feel they have that man.

It will fall to Wilson to help plot the medium to long-term strategy of the club.

Wilson helped transform Forest

Wilson helped shape Nottingham Forest’s rise, with his influence in just over two years at the City Ground helping turn them from relegation candidates to European contenders.

Brennan Johnson was sold to Tottenham for over £45m in 2023 but replaced with £15m Anthony Elanga and £3m Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Nikola Milenkovic was bought for under £12m from Fiorentina in 2024, forming an exceptional partnership in defence with Murillo and being named Forest’s Player of the Season.

That shrewd business helped Forest to Europe for the first time in 30 years after last season’s seventh-placed finish.

It says a lot about his standing and the respect he has that owner Evangelos Marinakis wanted him to stay at the City Ground to oversee the end of the transfer window, until the time was right for him to leave.

A deal was agreed a while ago after Wilson beat Jason Ayto to the post – with former Arsenal deputy sporting director Ayto eventually moving to Brighton.

Newcastle owner PIF has watched Wilson for a long time and expressed an interest in him when he was Rangers’ sporting director.

Bari Weiss and the Israel narrative in the US

For the past couple of months, the billionaire father-son duo of Larry and David Ellison have been making deals involving major media brands. Having acquired Paramount, the parent company of CBS News, they appointed Bari Weiss – an outspoken supporter of Israel – as the network’s editor-in-chief. The moves by the Ellisons are not just about growing their media empire, but about shaping the narrative around Israel in the US, where public support continues to decline.

Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a Gaza ceasefire, ending two years of genocide. It’s a moment that brought relief to Palestinians in Gaza. But for Donald Trump, it was an opportunity for self-congratulation – with both he and his allies emphasising how pivotal he was in making things happen. Tariq Nafi has been following the story.

In Portugal, the far-right party Chega, once on the fringes, is leading the polls, and its leader, Andre Ventura, has become one of the country’s most recognisable political figures. Ventura’s rise has been spurred by his television background and carefully crafted media persona. The onetime football pundit has become a political showman. And he’s been amplified by the country’s mainstream media, who have been chasing ratings over accountability.  Ryan Kohls reports.

Two Suspects Arrested As NRC Raises Alarm Over Equipment Vandalisation Across Country

Two suspected vandals have been arrested as the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Saturday decried increasing incidents of vandalisation of its electrical and signaling installations across the Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna, and Warri–Itakpe corridors.

A statement signed by its Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, noted that the Corporation described the attacks as a major threat to safe and efficient train operations.

The suspects, Ibrahim Abdullahi (22 years old) of Hayi, Rigasa, and Sani Ibrahim (24 years old) of Layi Turaki, Rigasa, were apprehended by operatives of the Nigeria Police, Railway Command attached to the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS).

They were arrested in Kaduna in connection with the recent vandalisation of its equipment at the Rigasa Train Station area.

The arrest followed the discovery on Friday, at about 12:30 p.m., that a cable wire had been cut and removed from one of NRC’s cranes stationed within the Rigasa facility.

Acting on intelligence, the patrol team led by ASP Abdullahi Bwajin, Administrative Officer at Rigasa, traced and arrested the suspects, according to the statement.

“During interrogation, the duo confessed to committing the crime and disclosed that they sold the stolen cable to one Musa, popularly known as “Musa Major,” for ₦90,000. Each suspect reportedly received ₦30,000 as his share, while another member of their syndicate, Abdulwahab Yakubu of Rigasa, is currently at large”, the statement read in part.

The NRC said efforts are ongoing by the Nigeria Police, Railway Command (AKTS), to apprehend the remaining suspect and recover the stolen materials.

It commended the Command for its professionalism and swift action, assuring that all culprits involved in acts of vandalism will face the full weight of the law.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, expressed deep concern over the increasing attacks on railway electrical and signaling infrastructure, describing them as Critical National Assets.

He stated that henceforth, the Corporation, in collaboration with security agencies, will treat such offences as economic sabotage with severe legal consequences for perpetrators.

Dr. Opeifa further appealed to members of the public, particularly residents of communities hosting railway facilities, to support the NRC and security agencies in protecting these assets.

An injury-hit Novak Djokovic suffered a shock defeat by Monegasque qualifier Valentin Vacherot in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters.

Monaco’s Vacherot, who is ranked 204th in the world, recorded a 6-3 6-4 victory to become the lowest ranked ATP Masters 1000 finalist in history.

The 26-year-old will face either his cousin, the unseeded Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, or Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s final.

“I’m trying to pinch myself, is this real?” said Vacherot, 26.

Injury has been a problem all tournament for Djokovic and he vomited during his previous matches after struggling with the heat and humidity.

The issues flared up again in Saturday’s semi-final with the 38-year-old receiving medical treatment on several occasions.

At the start of the seventh game, the former world number one had to take an extended medical break, lying on his stomach shirtless as a physio attended to his back.

He received treatment again at the break but battled through into the second set.

Despite visibly struggling, the Serb provided the Shanghai crowd with hopes of a comeback when he moved into a 4-3 lead before Vacherot reeled off three straight games to reach the final.

“I want to congratulate Valentin for reaching his first Masters final,” Djokovic said.

“Going from qualifications, it’s an amazing story. I told him at the net that he’s had an amazing tournament, but more so his attitude is very good and his game was amazing as well.

“So it’s all about him. I wish him all the best in the finals and the better player won today.”

Dianne Buswell hits back at claims Stefan Dennis’ illness is ‘a cover up’ for pregnancy struggles

The BBC previously announced Stefan Dennis will not be performing on Strictly this weekend due to illness and now Dianne Buswell has been forced to hit back at cruel theories

After it was revealed that Stefan Dennis will not be performing on Strictly Come Dancing this weekend due to illness, his dance partner Dianne Buswell has hit back at cruel theories circulating on social media.

The Aussie-native took to Instagram to set the record straight as she penned on her stories: “I just have to clarify as I have had lots of people messaging me thinking this is a cover up for me not being able to dance?

“Firstly we wouldn’t lie especially about somebody being sick. And secondly I am fine, yes I’m pregnant but I’m also very capable and feeling really good. Thirdly there are things in place if any pro were to get sick or injured.”

The Strictly Come Dancing Instagram page revealed the news on Friday (October 10) as they said: “Due to illness over the past few days, Stefan Dennis has been advised by doctors to rest and as a result, he will not dance this weekend.

“In lines with the rules of Strictly, Stefan and Dianne will receive a bye through to next week when they will hopefully be able to dance again.”

Fans flocked to the comments section to send the Neighbours star well wishes as one expressed: “Get well soon, I hope to see you back on the dance floor next week.”

Another viewer commented: “Wishing Stefan a speedy recovery. Cannot wait to see the Aussies back on the dance floor,” while a third said: “Get well soon Stefan.”

The news was also shared by Janette Manrara on Friday night’s It Takes Two as she sent Stefan her love and said she hoped to see him back on the dancefloor next week.

Prior to clapping back at the theories, Dianne shared a post on Instagram to wish her partner a speedy recovery. She wrote: “Sending Aussie love to the wonderful @stefandennis7 you are such a trooper and I know how much you wanted to dance. Hopefully we will be back in full force next week.”

Stefan, responded to the announcement himself, writing: “A huge cheers and thanks to everyone who has been supporting myself and Dianne.

“So sorry to disappoint for tomorrow night but I expect to be back on deck with a full recovery and a rip roaring dance next week to makeup.”

Stefan received a mixed reaction for his routine last week as he and Dianne performed the Cha Cha Cha.

He had told the judges he was “petrified” before taking to the stage, explaining how the routine had “stumped him”. And it appeared those nerves may have continued as he left the stage.

As he climbed the steps there was panic as he misplaced his footing and tripped up the stairs. A panicky Dianne caught him and exclaimed: “Golly gosh. Be careful, be careful.” Thankfully, he was left unharmed by the stumble.

The judges awarded the pair a total score of 17, which received a round of applause from the rest of the cast.

Strictly Come Dancing continues tonight at 6:05pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
