A cross-code exhibition game that combines league and union rules has been approached by The Rugby Football League.

The Australian company Hybrid Rugby, which has been attempting to launch its combination of the sports for more than ten years, is reportedly calling for England’s rugby league and union teams to meet next year.

England’s rugby league team has been informed that an expanded Super League has prevented them from playing a mid-season game in 2026, while the nation’s rugby union side are preparing for the first Nations Championship, which has filled their regular Test window.

Additionally, the RFU and Prem clubs have an agreement that guarantees top players’ performance for England’s biggest games by ensuring they are in top condition when they play.

Rhodri Jones, managing director of RL Commercial, responded, “We have received an enquiry about Hybrid rugby.”

This particular approach has not yet been evaluated. There are many things to think about.

However, if we think the sport has a real benefit, we’ll do it if we do.

With a league game at Maine Road in Manchester followed by a game of rugby union at Twickenham, the two sports’ domestic superpowers at the time, the introduction of professionalism in rugby union in the middle of the 1990s.

The league game between Wigan and Va’aiga Tuigamala was won by Andy Farrell, Shaun Edwards, and Wayne Va’aiga Tuigamala, who lost with a score of 44-19.

In a match that was played in league rules and union rules, Sale defeated St Helens in 2003.

The 745 game, which was launched in 2024 to raise money and awareness for motor neurone disease, features composite rules and retired star players.

The most famous game in Hybrid Rugby was when Randwick faced league rivals West Suburbs Magpies in a fantasy Sydney union club in 2015. It has a 60-second halfway point.
