Williams’ history-making day ends in narrow defeat

Despite being defeated by Olga Danilovic in the first round on Sunday, former world no. 1 Venus Williams said it was “such a great moment” to make history at the Australian Open.

After accepting a wildcard into the main draw, the American legend, 45, became the oldest player to play in the women’s singles division during the Open Era.

She broke Japan’s Kimiko Date’s previous record of 44 when she bowed out in the first round of 2015, setting a new high for her.

Williams’ record-breaking performance, however, did not come to an end with a 4-0 lead in the decisive set.

The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion described it as “a fantastic game and such a fantastic moment.”

With each match, I improve my game and my destination, according to the coach.

Three years before the birth of her first-round opponent Danilovic, Williams made her Australian Open debut at age 17 in 1998.

Williams, who hit a forehand winner to take the first set 7-6 (7-5), described the crowd’s energy as “lifted up by the energy from the crowd.”

Serb Danilovic, who is ranked 69th in the world, responded with a second set lead of just 30 minutes, but Williams regrouped for a victory in the final set before falling behind six games in a row.

She also had some luck there, Williams continued. However, that’s just the sport, and it occasionally operates in that manner.

” I felt good at 4-0. It represents the biggest improvement I’ve seen since returning.

Before the match, I said to myself, “I really want to take this moment,” adding that opponent Danilovic was totally aware of the significance of their first-round encounter. Playing against Venus Williams is something I can’t take for granted because these things don’t happen every day.

“It was such a pleasure to play such a legend.”

Williams must demonstrate herself in order to win Wimbledon wildcard cash.

When Williams resumed her WTA Tour action at the Washington Open in July 2025, she had not played for more than a year.

Peyton Stearns, a fellow American, defeated her in her opening match of that competition, but she lost six of her subsequent tour matches.

Following wildcard selection, the US Open and the Australian Open suffered first-round losses. She did well in both of her matches, but she lost in the final sets.

Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash said he believed Williams should be considered for wildcards at upcoming Grand Slam tournaments like this summer’s Wimbledon, but only if her form and results merit them. He made the remarks during a broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live’s daily podcast from the Australian Open.

Venus has won three matches in three years, according to Cash, not a lot of tennis.

She is a superstar, and she certainly deserves a wildcard if she plays and performs. One of the best tennis players we’ve ever seen is her.

Why do we need to give them [wildcards] to Venus, she needs to prove herself, according to some Australians?

She both enjoyed her tennis and the US summer. It would seem as though she was short on match play at 4-0 before losing the following six games, though I’m not sure if she ran out of gas. However, it only serves to demonstrate her continued tennis skills.

Given that Venus Williams is a talented tennis player, “Women would be great for her to play at once more,” she said. She must demonstrate herself, I believe.

Sudan’s people endure ‘horror and hell’ in war, says UN rights chief

Volker Turk, the UN’s representative for Sudan, claims that Sudan’s people are still living in severe conditions and are being forced to flee.

Turk made the remarks during his first visit to Sudan since the war broke out in April 2023 that it was “despicable” that money was being used to “adjust the suffering of the population,” not to mention drones.

The UN has repeatedly warned about foreign actors’ involvement in Sudan’s civil war.

Despite Abu Dhabi’s persistent denial, the United Arab Emirates has been repeatedly accused of providing the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) with weapons, support, and political backing.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia support the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). Iran and Turkiye reportedly gave the army weapons, including drones.

Turk, however, claimed from Port Sudan, on the coast of Sudan, that the nation was “affected by the increasing militarisation of society by all parties to the conflict, including through the arming of civilians and the recruitment and use of children.”

After the SAF and RSF fought to oust themselves from power in 2023, the nation was plunged into a bloody civil war.

Horrific violations

The UN rights chief warned of similar crimes taking place in the Kordofan region, the epicenter of the conflict right now, after hearing testimony about “unbearable” atrocities committed by survivors of attacks in Darfur.

The “commanders of this conflict and those who are arming, funding, and profiting from this war” must hear the testimony, he said.

Regardless of affiliation, Turk urged that repeated attacks on civilian infrastructure could lead to “war crimes” and that “we must ensure that these horrific violations are brought to justice.”

The UN chief urged both sides to “cease intolerable attacks against civilian targets, including markets, hospitals, schools, and shelters,” according to the UN chief.

Both sides of the conflict have been accused of committing war crimes, but the RSF was the one who was alleged by monitoring groups of killing at least 1,500 people during its capture of El-Fasher in Darfur in October.

Out of a population of 46.8 million, 30.4 million people in Sudan need humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Particularly in the Darfur and Kordofan regions, the population is experiencing acute food insecurity and a nutrition crisis. Disease outbreaks are also aggravated by the situation at the same time.

Bristol Bears suffered a heartfelt defeat at Ashton Gate against Bordeaux, which would have guaranteed them a home tie in the last 16 and top spot in their Champions Cup pool.

Louis Bielle-Biarrey, a winger from France, scored a hat-trick for the French side in the game’s final try.

Gabriel Oghre, a hooker, gave the hosts the lead before Bielle-Biarrey’s two tries and Nicolas Depoortere’s one helped put the visitors in command.

The final fifteen minutes of Benhard Janse van Rensburg’s try were thrilling, and Sam Worsley’s penalty brought the lead back within five points.

However, Bordeaux, like true champions, snatched a crucial late bonus-point attempt to advance as number one seeds.

Dream home run at the price of Bristol errors

With victories over Scarlets, Pau, and Bulls, Lam’s side entered what he described as a “historic situation” before the game, with one more victory keeping home-knockout rugby until at least the semi-finals.

Former Bordeaux hooker Oghre was given a quick start, and Harry Randall’s quick tap penalty gave the hosts a dream opening.

When Matthieu Jalibert released the flyer Bielle-Biarrey, the high-scoring visitors reacted.

The Bears’ handling in wet conditions later cost them, as Bielle-Biarrey punished a loose pass before Depoortere’s score was ruined by yet another error.

In a slower second half, the ball was diverted by the powerful defense and Ellis Genge, who appeared to be headed over.

Janse van Rensburg created a thrilling conclusion by cutting a short line and extending.

Bordeaux were awarded three points after the restart, but a typo from the restart came shortly after Worsley’s penalty had brought them back within striking distance.

Bielle-Biarrey was the one who could not escape their own half, and he threw a loose ball at the death, kicking it through and stumbling down for victory.

It was very difficult, I must say.

Bielle-Biarrey, the player of the match, told Premier Sports, “We are really happy to win and take the group.” It was very difficult today, both teams wanted to play. We were expecting it to win the group, but it was really important to us.

European Challenge Cup

Exeter (19) 31

Cons: Slade 3, Dweba, Heaven, and Tchumbadze 2,

In the final 16 of the European Challenge Cup, Chiefs of Exeter defeated a reshuffled Cardiff side to secure a home tie. Bachuki Tchumbadze scored a pair of early braces.

Before hooker Joseph Dweba extended the Chiefs’ lead to 19-0 at the break, the tighthead prop went over twice at Sandy Park.

After a slow opening period, Exeter changed their forward line, and Julian Heaven, Dweba’s replacement, added another try to add bonus points.

The home side quickly set out for their first penalty penalty game as Cardiff made ten changes to their lineup.

Exeter immediately regrouped at a lineout, and Tchumbadze burrowed over for the opening score, despite the visitors’ escape from punishment for what appeared to be a high tackle on Harvey Skinner.

Rory Thornton of Cardiff was sent to the sin-bin after being fouled by Varney, and his team were 19 points ahead when the second row returned to the field.

TMO Marius Jonker confirmed Tchumbadze’s second try of the game, and Dweba pressed his way over in the corner a second dominant lineout and drive later.

At the end of the second period, the Chiefs held a commanding lead, but Cardiff quickly stepped up, running the ball well and gaining territory as they forced the hosts back.

When Ioan Lloyd sent a chip through for Tom Bowen to gather and dot down, it appeared as though Cardiff would receive some compensation for their efforts, but the try was ruled out for a knock-on in the build-up.

After Ethan Roots won possession at the lineout and Heaven darted away from the whitewash, Exeter was the one who scored once more.

Woodburn, Feyi-Waboso, Slade, Haydon-Wood, Brown-Bampoe, Skinner, Varney, Sio, Dweba, Tchumbadze, Jenkins, Zambonin, Hooper, E Roots, James, and more.

Replacements: Hammersley, Goodrick-Clarke, J Roots, Tuima, Pearson, Capstick, Chapman, and Heaven.

Cardiff: Grady, Smit, Jennings, Bowen, Mulder, Southworth, E Lloyd, Wainwright, McNally, Thornton, Botham, Thomas, Basham, and McLean.

Hughes, Domachowski, Sebastian, Nott, Lawrence, Cottle, Davies, and Winnett are the replacements.
