US judge blocks Trump’s deployment of National Guard in state of Illinois

A federal judge in Chicago has temporarily blocked United States President Donald Trump’s deployment of hundreds of National Guard soldiers in Illinois.

Chicago has become the latest flashpoint in the Trump administration’s crackdown to deport millions of immigrants, which has prompted allegations of rights abuses and myriad lawsuits.

US District Judge April Perry on Thursday said that permitting Guard troops in the state would only “add fuel to the fire”. The decision on comes five days after another US judge blocked a similar deployment in Portland, Oregon.

The judge said her full, written order will be made available on Friday.

The lawsuit was filed Monday by Chicago, the third-largest city in the US, and the state of Illinois to stop the deployments of Illinois and Texas Guard members. Some troops were already at an immigration building in the Chicago suburb of Broadview when Perry heard arguments on Thursday.

In delivering her decision on Thursday from the bench, Perry said she was having difficulty lending credence to the government’s claims of violence during protests at the immigration facility in Broadview, Illinois.

She cited a ruling from another Chicago judge, also issued on Thursday, that temporarily limited the ability of federal agents to use force to disperse crowds. Protesters and journalists had filed a separate lawsuit seeking that order, saying federal officers had injured them at the Broadview center.

Perry said the behaviour of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers (ICE) has prompted the protests, and that deploying Guard soldiers to Broadview would “only add fuel to the fire that defendants themselves have started”.

Trump has called this week for the jailing of Democratic officials in Illinois resisting his mass deportation campaign, after armed troops from Texas arrived in the state to bolster the operation.

Separately, a three-judge panel at a federal appeals court in San Francisco on Thursday appeared likely to set aside the ruling blocking Trump’s Portland deployment, which would clear the way for hundreds of soldiers to enter that city.

Trump’s immigration crackdown is aimed at fulfilling a key election pledge to rid the country of what he called waves of foreign “criminals”.

The Trump administration has argued the troops are necessary to protect immigration agents and facilities in Chicago, falsely depicting it as a “war zone”.

The US president says he could invoke the rarely used Insurrection Act to force deployments of troops around the country if courts or local officials are “holding us up”.

The Insurrection Act is a federal law that gives the US president the power to deploy the military or federalise National Guard troops anywhere in the US to restore order during an insurrection.

The last time it was invoked was in 1992, in response to riots in Los Angeles by Republican President George HW Bush.

Cummins’ Ashes fitness race is ‘tight’ – Australia

PA Media

Australia remain hopeful that captain Pat Cummins will be fit for the first Ashes Test against England in November but coach Andrew McDonald says it is getting “tight”.

The 32-year-old pace bowler has not played since suffering a back injury against the West Indies in July. Australian media reported on Wednesday that he will miss the first Test in Perth on 21 November and is doubtful for the whole series.

On Friday McDonald said there was “a lot more positivity” surrounding the skipper’s chances of playing in the opening Test but he would need at least “four, four-and-a-half weeks” of bowling practice to condition his body for the rigours of Ashes cricket. The first Test is six weeks away.

“The reality is, we’re starting to get tight in terms of the times,” McDonald said.

“We’re still optimistic, hopeful, but this time next week, I think we’ll be in a position to get a better gauge on where he’s at.”

McDonald said he would weigh up whether Cummins could be included in the side even if he was a “little bit underdone”.

Cummins has taken 309 Test wickets at an average of 22.10 runs per dismissal.

He is even more formidable in Australia, taking 177 wickets at 19.92, while he has also taken 91 wickets against England in 19 matches.

England vice-captain Harry Brook said it would be a “bonus” if Cummins was to miss out but warned that they could not take any replacement lightly.

“Pat Cummins is a phenomenal bowler and has been for so many years now,” said Brook on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He’s got incredible skill at high pace and if he’s not there it’s a bonus for us.

‘Stokes is a warrior’

Brook is also confident that England captain Ben Stokes will be fit to lead his side through all five Tests this winter.

Stokes has been troubled with a shoulder injury since the Test series against India, and has not completed any of their past four series.

“I don’t have to do much as vice-captain,” added Brook. “Everyone knows what Stokesy’s like, he’s an incredible leader. Everything he does on and off the field is awesome.

“I’m looking forward to working alongside him. I have complete faith in him getting through all five Tests. He’s a warrior and he’ll try his hardest.

“We are confident going out there and looking forward to the challenge.”

Cummins’ absence could play into our hands – Brook

PA Media

Any absence of Australia captain Pat Cummins from the Ashes could play into England’s hands, according to batter Harry Brook.

Australian media have reported pace bowler Cummins will miss the first Test because of a back injury and could be forced out of the entire series.

Head coach Andrew McDonald said he is “optimistic” Cummins will be fit for the first Test but admitted time is getting “tight” for the 32-year-old to line-up in Perth on 21 November.

Speaking at the Professional Cricketers’ Association awards, Brook said: “With him out of their side for the first game, from what we’ve seen, hopefully that plays into our hands.

“Obviously he is an amazing bowler and has been for many years; he bowls at high pace with high skill.

“But they have a lot of good bowlers, quick bowlers, so we can’t take anybody lightly.”

Cummins, one of the premier fast bowlers in the world, has not played since July because of lumbar bone stress in his back.

If and when the injury heals, the Australia skipper would still need time to gradually increase the intensity of his bowling, a period which McDonald admitted would take at least four weeks. The first match in the five-Test series is six weeks away.

If Cummins is ruled out for part, or all of the Ashes, Scott Boland – who famously took six wickets for seven runs on his Test debut against England in Melbourne in 2021 – would step in to join Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc in the Australia pace attack.

Given those three men are well into their 30s and five intense Tests are crammed into seven weeks, the home side would probably have to dip into reserves like Michael Neser, Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott.

England have a fitness concern over their own captain, after Ben Stokes missed the final Test against India in July with a shoulder injury.

All-rounder Stokes, 34, is expected to be fit for the first Ashes Test, but has not played a full role in any of England’s past four series because of various injuries.

Brook, England’s white-ball captain, has been promoted to Test vice-captain for the Ashes tour and would lead the tourists if Stokes misses any of the series.

But the 26-year-old said he is not “biting at the bit” to captain England in an Ashes Test and expects Stokes to play in all five matches.

“I think he’ll power through even if he has a little niggle,” said Brook. “I have full faith that he is going to be there. Everybody in the world knows what he’s like, his character and the way that he just cracks on.

“Obviously, being captain would be a massive honour. But I would much rather Stokesy played five Test matches; he’s such a vital part of our team, batting at number six and bowling the overs that he does. For him to play all five Tests would be awesome for us.”

Brook’s promotion has ended Ollie Pope’s spell as Stokes’ deputy, a role he has filled since 2022. England director of cricket Rob Key explained the decision was made because Brook is a “better leader”.

Brook admitted he had an “instinct” the change was going to come before it was made official and that he has been in contact with Pope.

“I dropped him a couple of messages a couple of weeks ago, talking about golf mainly,” said Brook.
