Katie Price under fire after ‘sunburning’ cat in new cruelty row

Katie Price has been blasted by Peta after footage emerged of one of her bald cats with sunburn in the recent heatwave

Reality star Katie Price has been blasted for letting one of her £2,000-a-pop bald cats get sunburnt during the last heatwave.

The star – branded a “serial killer” by charity Peta over the deaths of at least eight of her animals – has five sphynxes. In a video, she showed one with a red head and back.

Stroking the cat, she said: “Oh Kevin you have been in the sun today, you have got sun burnt despite us putting sun cream on you… look at his little face.” The caption accompanying the video said: “Trying to keep the cats out of the sun is hard work.”

But Peta’s Elisa Allen claimed the former model had repeatedly ignored advice on pet care. She said: “Anyone who warns Katie not to hurt the animals she takes in might as well be screaming into the wind, for all she seems to care. And here we go again: her cat is sunburnt – something she was likely warned about when acquiring a gimmick cat, bred to look odd and be hairless.”

Peta says cats with “light or no fur can burn easily, which is just one reason to keep them indoors.” It adds: “If they do go into a secure garden, apply vet-approved sunscreen and ensure they have plenty of shade. Cat guardians must stay alert, if you spot redness, swelling, or signs of infection, seek veterinary care immediately.”

The charity has previously called for an injunction to stop Katie from having animals. It also offered her £5,000 to never acquire more animals, following multiple tragic deaths.

Four dogs – Blade, Queenie, Sharon and Sparkle – were killed by cars near her home. And one of Katie’s horses was hit by a car and killed in 2017 after escaping from a field. In 2020, dog Rolo suffocated in her home after getting stuck in an electric armchair. Katie admitted giving him cannabis oil, but said she was unaware it was illegal to do so without a vet prescription.

The mum-of-five has also announced the death of a chameleon and told how she had to put down another designer cat, Frog. “He had a neurological disease’” she wrote in her memoir. “Within days it had spread through his body. So I cuddled him in my arms and he had to be put to sleep.”

In February, she hit back at critics of her record with animals, saying: ‘It’s circumstances that were out of my hands. It’s no lack of me not looking after them. I love animals, I love nurturing.”

MPs vote to establish independent regulator for men’s football in England

MPs have voted to back the Football Governance Bill and establish an independent regulator to oversee the men’s game in England’s top five divisions.

They voted by 415 to 98 to pass the bill at its third reading in the House of Commons, and it is now poised to become law.

The legislation will grant powers to a body that is independent from government and football authorities.

The government has previously said an independent regulator will “protect football clubs” by “ensuring their financial sustainability”.

“I am proud to be part of the winning team that has put our fans back on the pitch at the heart of the game, where they belong,” Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said.

The bill was initially introduced in March 2024 by the then-Conservative government but failed to pass through parliament before a general election was called in May. The new Labour government reintroduced the bill in July 2024.

In a message to fans before the vote, Nandy had told the Commons: “We are doing this for you because for too long, you have been treated as an afterthought at best or a nuisance at worst in a game that is only great because of you.

“This is for Macclesfield, for Wigan, for Bury, for Bolton, for Derby, for Reading, for Sheffield Wednesday, for Morecambe and for many, many more who have had to endure the misery of being put last when they should have been put first.”

Shadow Minister for Sport, Louie French MP, criticised the Bill, saying “a future Conservative government will trigger a review of Labour’s regulator as soon as possible”.

Football campaign group Fair Game described the bill clearing the Commons as “a historic step forward for our national game.”

MPs vote against free-to-air games, alcohol

MPs, however, voted against a proposal from the Liberal Democrats to make at least 10 Premier League games available on free-to-air television each season.

The new clause would have also required the League Cup final, and the Championship, League One and League Two play-off finals to be free-to-air.

In the UK, the list of ‘crown jewels’ sports events, which cannot solely be shown by broadcasters who charge viewers, includes football’s World Cup and European Championships as well as the FA Cup final.

Live Premier League matches have been broadcast behind a paywall since the league’s inception 33 years ago, with only a handful of games shown on the BBC during Covid in 2020.

Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock said: “The government believes that the current list of events works well, and it strikes an appropriate balance between access to sporting events and allowing sports to maximise broadcasting revenue.

“We all want to see more matches being televised, free-to-air, but that must be balanced against investment and not risk it.”

The Lib Dems claimed analysis of subscription prices shows that to watch each available Premier League game live next season fans will have to pay £660 a year.

Lib Dem Culture, Media and Sport spokesperson Max Wilkinson MP said they were “deeply disappointed” by the vote result.

Last month, it was revealed Premier League television viewing figures on main live rights-holder Sky Sports were down 10% last season, while TNT Sports had a 17% reduction in its year-on-year figures.

MPs also rejected a Conservative amendment to force ministers to launch a formal consultation on scrapping the rule banning alcohol in football stands across the top five tiers of men’s football in England.

“The alcohol ban, which has been in place since 1985, was introduced to help curb hooliganism on the terraces during the problematic era of British football,” French said.

“As football fans know, we have this legacy ban which sees fans rushing to drink their beer before kick-off and at half-time, this often leads to the fans being delayed entering the stadiums and overcrowding on the concourses.”

Responding to French, Sports Minister Peacock said: “This is outside the scope of the Bill, which is focused on sustainability of clubs and game overall. I’ve raised the issue with the Home Office, as I committed to do during the Bill committee, as it is their policy lead.”

The minister also said an amendment to establish a compensation scheme to help with care costs for former players with dementia is also “not within the tight regulatory scope of the Bill”.

“Although that does not mean the government is not aware and very sympathetic to the calls that are being made on this issue, both in this House and for many former players and their families,” Peacock said.

MPs also voted against a requirement for prospective board chairs of the Regulator to publish their political interests and donations.

That amendment was tabled after the government’s proposed chair of the new independent regulator, David Kogan, becoming the subject of an inquiry by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

Point replayed in Fritz match after line call ‘malfunction’

Wimbledon 2025

All England Club Dates: June 30 through July 13

A point in Taylor Fritz’s match with Karen Khachanov had to be replayed because of a “malfunction” with the technology, which caused more controversy surrounding the electronic line call system at Wimbledon on Tuesday’s quarter-final match.

The system on Centre Court was accidentally disabled by a human error during Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova’s match against Britain’s Sonay Kartal, and the Wimbledon organizers apologised on Saturday.

This time, “fault” was accidentally called during the opening match of the fourth set, with Fritz leading 15-0 after falling 3-1, 3-3, 3-4, and 3-1, respectively.

Swedish umpire Louise Azemar-Engzell called “stop” and said to the crowd inside Court One, “Ladies and gentlemen, we will replay the last point because of a malfunction,” after checking the matter over the phone. The current system operation is.”

The All England Club stated in a statement that the player’s service motion started while the BBG was still passing the net, which was inconsistent with the system’s understanding of the point.

The Chair Umpire ordered that the issue be replayed, so.

After Fritz’s first serve had landed out, one of the players immediately grabbed a ball from the middle of the court and called it BBG.

The American went on to win the match 6-3 6-4 1-6 7-6 (7-4) to reach the semi-finals.

The All England Club stated that they “continue to have full confidence in the accuracy of the ball-tracking technology” following the error in the Pavlyunchenkova-Kartal match.

When operating the system, changes were made to eliminate the possibility of “human error.”

“Much better” or “dodgy”? – the technology industry players

Khachanov said he favors human line judges because they leave him feeling “too alone without them.”

To be honest, he said, “I’m more for line umpires.” Without line umpires, you have a slight sense that the court is too big and alone.

“We’ve seen a few calls, but they both seem to require very precise and no mistakes.” Why is this taking place, I wonder?

Electronic line calls, in Fritz’s opinion, were a welcome addition.

There will be some issues, he continued. Instead of the umpires, I still believe it’s much better to have the electronic line calling because I enjoy not having to consider challenging calls in the middle of the points.

The ball is called, and we are aware of that.

Other players have previously expressed disapproval of the system.

Emma Raducanu, the British tenor, called it “dodgy,” while Belinda Bencic, the Swiss tenor, referred to complaints about the technology in the locker room.

When Aryna Sabalenka’s shot on Friday was found to have clipped the line midway through the first set of her disappointment with the world number one, Raducanu was particularly upset.

After a tense 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 loss, where the Briton engaged in constant conversation with the top seed for the majority of the match, the Briton declared, “That call was for sure out.”
