Who is Britain’s 11th heavyweight world champion Wardley?

Fabio Wardley has become the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) heavyweight champion – and 11th British heavyweight champion – after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the title.

The Ukrainian fighter informed the WBO he would not proceed with a mandatory title defence against the 30-year-old after “thoughtful consideration”.

Wardley became the number one challenger to Usyk after upsetting Joseph Parker in a thrilling October clash.

It caps a remarkable rise for the former Ipswich Town academy footballer, who had no amateur background in boxing before he turned professional in 2017.

The 6ft 5in fighter boasts an undefeated record with 20 wins from his 21 contests – including an impressive 19 knockouts.

Wardley’s ‘unbelievable’ journey to world champion

Wardley’s team said it was “unbelievable” he had gone from white collar boxing to heavyweight world champion.

The Ipswich-born fighter originally started in white collar boxing – a form of the sport where participants train and compete in bouts, usually for charity or fitness. Despite his limited experience in the ring, he stepped straight into his professional career with no amateur fights.

“Fabio has really captured the public’s imagination with his Cinderella-type story and he’s an exciting fighter,” his promoter Frank Warren Warren told BBC Radio Suffolk.

“This is an unbelievable story. Somebody who has never ever had an amateur fight; he’s just had a couple of white collar fights and he’s gone on to become champion.

“Not just Suffolk, but the whole nation should be proud of him.”

Matt Brennan, part of Wardley’s team, said it was an “amazing achievement from where Fab has come from to where he is today” – even if he did not think it was the “way you would expect to win a world title”.

“It is a shame for Fab and us because it would have been great to see Fab win the world title in the ring… he can now call himself a world champion and nobody can ever take that away from him,” he added.

What’s next for Wardley?

At present, young Briton Moses Itauma is the number one contender on the WBO’s rankings.

The 20-year-old has a bout scheduled for 24 January, 2026 against Jermaine Franklin Jr at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester.

The outcome of that could dictate what happens next for Wardley and the WBO belt.

Who are the previous British heavyweight world champions?

Wardley follows in the footsteps of Daniel Dubois, Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, David Haye, Lennox Lewis, Herbie Hide, Henry Akinwande, Frank Bruno, Michael Bentt and Robert Fitzsimmons as Britons to have become world heavyweight champions in the sport’s history.

Of the 11, Wardley becomes the sixth to do this with the WBO belt, with both Fury and Joshua among those to have been recent WBO heavyweight champions.

No British boxer has won all four major belts at the same time, but three of them have held three of boxing’s four major heavyweight belts simultaneously.

Joshua held the WBO, IBF and WBO belts at the same time during two spells as champion, while Fury also had all three during his first championship run.

During Lewis’ second reign as champion between 1997 and 2001, he held the WBA, WBC and IBF titles together.

Lewis’ second title reign of four years was the longest of any British world heavyweight champion, successfully defending the belts nine times.

‘Wardley’s journey is the most remarkable’

Wardley’s journey to the top is perhaps the most remarkable.

His story reads like the script of a movie – from white collar boxing to world champion. Life in the professional ranks has been a steep learning curve.

But what he lacks in experience, he more than makes up for in grit, determination and a thunderous right hand.

His come-from-behind wins against both Justis Huni and Joseph Parker were proof of his incredible punching power.

While he doesn’t have a video moment of being presented with the belt in the ring, his dramatic 11th-round victory in London against New Zealand’s Parker will live long in the memory – and showed a champion’s heart.

Of the current crop of British heavyweights, I doubt many would have predicted the former Ipswich Town academy footballer would be the one to finish the year as a world champion.

Skirts, skorts and leggings – why netball kits are getting a new look

London Mavericks

The netball dress is an iconic sporting uniform – and it’s not about to fall out of fashion any time soon.

But its figure-hugging design, often also very short, is not to everyone’s liking – and that includes players from the top end of the game down to grassroots level.

Which is why a change is coming to the English game, led by London Mavericks, and it is one the Netball Super League (NSL) club believes will make the sport more welcoming to the young generations that are frightened away year after year by the lack of permitted uniforms that suit their body type.

Dresses are still in, and many players are expected to still favour them, but also on the kit peg will be options of shorts, skorts (skirts with shorts attached underneath), plus leggings and longer vests.

“I always train in leggings and that’s what I feel most comfortable in, rather than the traditional dress,” said Mavericks and England defender Razia Quashie.

“To be able to wear this on the court in a match is something that I know will help me feel my best, which can only have a positive impact on performance.”

Quashie described the new choice as “a great way” to keep youngsters involved, allowing them to dress in kit that suits them best rather than an outfit that might be unflattering or uncomfortable.

Captain Ellie Rattu agreed, adding: “We want to feel good when we’re playing. The last thing you want is to be more focused on what you’re wearing than the game itself, and that can have a negative impact on performance.

“Confidence is everything in sport and if this is a way to elevate our performance as a team then I am in full support.”

‘We want women and girls to feel safe, seen and celebrated’

Body image matters in sport at all levels, and it is taken seriously by NSL players.

Australian Elle McDonald, who left Cardiff-based Dragons at the end of last season, said there was a “look good, feel good, play good” motto in the team.

Manchester Thunder and England star Amy Carter spoke of diversity in dressing rooms when she told BBC Sport earlier this year: “You’ve got the really girly girls that want to do all the make-up, do the hair and do the slick-back for the netball games.

“But then you also have the girls that don’t want to do that sort of stuff and might not want to even wear dresses and want to wear more T-shirts and leggings.”

The sport’s leaders are listening. Mavericks say their changes will “remove barriers to participation and raise standards”.

Recent research by charity Women in Sport found 64% of girls drop out of sport at school at 16, with one of the main reasons found being the kit options open to them.

More than two-thirds of 143 elite British sportswomen who responded to a BBC Sport questionnaire in 2024 said the majority of the equipment they used was not specifically designed for a woman.

Hockey’s international federation agreed in 2023 that players on the same team could wear combinations of skirts, shorts and skorts, while England’s Lionesses football team switched from white to blue shorts after players expressed period concerns.

Wimbledon’s all-white rule was eased in 2022 to allow women to wear dark-coloured undershorts at the tennis Grand Slam.

In netball, Australia’s federation announced a wide range of kit options for players in 2022.

Great Britain Olympic hockey player Tess Howard is driving the Inclusive Sportswear Charter, which is involved in the Mavericks’ initiative.

Howard said the Mavericks are “normalising kit choice and giving schools and clubs the confidence to follow”.

NSL managing director Claire Nelson approves, saying the decision marks “more than a change in kit”.

Strictly star Vicky Pattison stuns in birthday pics following sad show elimination

Vicky Pattison looked incredible as she showed off pics from her huge birthday celebration, despite being axed from Strictly Come Dancing

Vicky Pattison celebrated her birthday over the weekend with her Strictly Come Dancing pals and shared a series of glamorous snaps to mark turning 38 on social media

The former Geordie Shore star, who has turned 38, took to Instagram to share: “Happy birthday to meeeee….” She added: “A gorgeous evening celebrating at @broadwicksoho with some of my favourite people in the world… I feel so loved and lucky. Cake is @bakedpeterborough.”

In the photos, Vicky looked stunning in an all-black mini dress, smiling alongside her husband Ercan Ramadan and a number of fellow Strictly Come Dancing stars, including Chris Robshaw, George Clarke, Karen Carney, Julian Caillon, and Kai Widdrington’s girlfriend Chloe Wells.

Fans were quick to send their well-wishes, with one writing: “Hope your birthday was as amazing as you are!!” Another added: “Happy belated birthday. hope you had a awesome day. The cake is perfection.” A third fan commented: “Happy belated birthday gorgeous lady. I hope you had the best time.”

In another snap, Vicky looked radiant in a shimmery red dress as she laughed with Ercan, who looked dapper in a suit. She is also seen blowing out a huge cake decorated with red hearts.

The celebrations come shortly after Vicky was sadly eliminated from Strictly Come Dancing. She told her dance partner Kai Widdrington she was “so sorry” they wouldn’t make it to Blackpool, where contestants will perform at the Tower Ballroom next weekend.

Vicky and Kai had ended up in the dance-off alongside EastEnders actress Balvinder Sopal, 46, and dancer Julian Caillon, 30. Sopal and Caillon performed their American Smooth to My Guy by Mary Wells, while Pattison and Widdrington jived to Sound Of The Underground by Girls Aloud.

Judges Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke opted to save Sopal and Caillon, leaving Craig Revel Horwood with the casting vote. He revealed he would have made the same decision.

Reflecting on her time on the show, Vicky said: “It was so lovely while it lasted and I’ve had the nicest time. I knew this week was a difficult one for me and I tried my hardest, as I have every week. Listen, I didn’t think I’d get past week one.

“And I’m really honoured to have shared this experience with so many amazing people. Mostly with this fella (Widdrington) right here. I don’t want to sound too cheesy but (to Kai) you’ve been the best partner a girl can ask for. I’m so sorry I didn’t get you to Blackpool but I feel like I’ve won just by having you as my partner and I’m so grateful.”

Kai responded: “Oh, goodness me. Where do I start? You (to Vicky) are everything that this series is about. Strong, confident, independent – and all that I can say is, I have loved every single second.

“I’m going to be gutted not coming to Blackpool with you on Monday. But I just want you to know that I feel like I have also won getting you as my partner, and you will live on in Strictly history forever.”

“I’m going to be devastated if I don’t travel to Blackpool on Monday. However, I just want you to know that I also benefited from having you as my partner, and that you will remain forever in strict history.
