‘Hurt but proud’ – retiring Youngs on final defeat

“Proud. Emotional. Gutted.”

In three words, Leicester Tigers icon Ben Youngs summed up what it meant to finish his illustrious rugby union career with a narrow Premiership Grand Final defeat by Bath.

England’s most capped male player of all time came off the bench to replace his Tigers and international successor Jack van Poortvliet with 26 minutes remaining.

The ingenuity and influence that has been the hallmark of nearly two decades of Youngs at scrum-half for Tigers was instrumental in getting them so close to glory.

But ultimately, they were overcome 23-21 by a Bath side that lifted the trophy for the first time in 29 years.

“It hurts, but I’m proud,” Youngs told BBC Radio Leicester.

For fellow retiree and Tigers icon Dan Cole, who is second only to Youngs for England caps, his last game will live in infamy.

Less than six minutes after the prop was brought on, he was sin-binned for clattering into Finn Russell when attempting to charge down a kick in the 69th minute.

It allowed Russell to tee up the kick that sealed Bath’s victory, even though a converted Emeka Ilione try soon after set up a tense finish.

In a gruelling match on a draining, sun-soaked day, the late yellow card had Tigers down a man for a second time.

Before the break, it was another departing player in captain Julian Montoya who spent 10 minutes in the sin-bin for a high tackle on Ted Hill.

And while it was a loss that also marked the end of Michael Cheika’s one-year reign at the helm of the East Midlands club, the decorated head coach could only reflect on what the loss meant to those Tigers greats on their way out.

“I just feel disappointed and sorry that I didn’t prepare the guys in a good enough way to get them what they deserved today,” the Australian said.

“I love this group of guys, and love the club and I’m so proud of the players for the way they stayed in it right to the end.

“We gave ourselves a chance to win it right at the end, but unfortunately it didn’t go our way.”

With two-time World Cup winning South African fly-half Handre Pollard also moving on in the summer, the decider was seen as the “last dance” for an all-star ensemble of players.

Pollard’s high-profile three years at Mattioli Woods Welford Road ended empty-handed but he said that lack of silverware paled in comparison to what Tigers failed to accomplish for two of the club’s finest-ever servants.

“It’s very disappointing, and not so much about losing the game and the trophy but it’s more about sending Ben Youngs and Dan Cole and those guys off with a loss in the final,” Pollard said.

“That’s the one that gets you.

“We’ll have great memories with this team and I’ve enjoyed every minute.”

As for Youngs, who spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live after the match with his children and other family crowded around him, missing out on a sixth Premiership title will not stop him cherishing one of English rugby’s greatest careers.

“The ink is dry, I’m proud of my contribution and I’ll miss it,” he said.

Orange County’s Tamra Judge wrote: “Prayers for her family & friends. This is absolutely heartbreaking.” Salt Lake City star Heather Gay added a broken heart emoji and New York City’s Sai de Silva posted several crying emojis.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Lauren’s family by her co-workers, which has already raised over $131,000. The fundraising page said: “This unimaginable loss is impossible to comprehend and the hole that Lauren has left in this world and in her own family, is an impossible one to ever fill.

“We are devastated for her beloved husband, Kevin, who must now unexpectedly take on the sole role of parenting their two children … Emma (3) and newborn Jackson, who is still in the NICU. That the day Lauren was so eagerly awaiting should end in tragedy is truly unfathomable.”

They added: “Anyone that knew Lauren was affected by her warm smile, kind heart and thoughtful, intuitive nature. She was the kind of person who could comfort you with a just a few words, because she always spoke from the heart.

“She was sincere, intentional and compassionate, but among her greatest qualities was the love she had for her family. It was no secret how close she was to her entire family or how excited she was when she got to start her own.

“From getting engaged to Kevin and then getting married to becoming a mother with Emma and next with Jackson, Lauren beamed whenever she talked about all that she had with her beautiful family.”

In an update on Friday, Lauren’s co-workers revealed baby Jackson has left the NICU and is at home with his dad Kevin and sister Emma.

UK announces national inquiry into ‘grooming gangs’ after pressure

The British government has announced it will hold a national inquiry into organised child sexual abuse after months of resisting the call from opposition groups.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Saturday that he had read “every single word” of an independent report into the sexual assault scandal, also known as the “grooming gangs” case, by Baroness Louise Casey and would accept her recommendation for the investigation.

“That is the right thing to do on the basis of what she [Casey] has put in her audit. I asked her to do that job to double check on this; she has done that job for me and having read her report … I shall now implement her recommendations.” Starmer told reporters travelling with him during a visit to Canada.

Earlier this year, the government dismissed calls for a public inquiry, stating that it was focusing on recommendations already made in a seven-year national inquiry by Professor Alexis Jay.

In 2022, Jay found that there had been institutional failings across the country, affecting tens of thousands of victims in England and Wales.

But the opposition Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, said Starmer only backs the report because “a report told him to”.

But increased interest into the “grooming gangs” case, as the British press termed it, was pushed by far-right groups, including Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, and further stoked by tech billionaire and Tesla owner Elon Musk, after the perpetrators of one of the most high-profile cases in the country were men of Pakistani heritage.

Their push was branded by critics as a racist dog whistle. The vast majority of “grooming gang” offences, however, are carried out by white men, the UK’s National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) said earlier this year.

Musk used his X platform to criticise the British prime minister over not backing a national inquiry after the local authority in Oldham, a town in northern England, found that girls under the age of 18 were sexually exploited by groups of men in the 2000s and 2010s.

Musk also alleged that Starmer did not bring the perpetrators to justice when he was the country’s chief prosecutor between 2008 and 2013, a charge that Starmer had denied repeatedly.

Sam Thompson loving new role as he coaches ex Zara’s new boyfriend Louis Tomlinson

The pair – who have both dated the same reality star – will be on the England team at Soccer Aid at Old Trafford tomorrow

Sam Thompson is relishing his new role as Soccer Aid coach and bossing the team around after he was forced to pull out of playing in the charity match. The I’m A Celebrity favourite helped raise over £1million by completing a gruelling 261-mile five-day challenge for Unicef but injured his calf in the process.

It means he’ll be on the sidelines for tomorrow’s game. “I’ll putting my two pence in,” vowed Sam. “I might be shouting ‘I think we might need to change it to a 4-2-3-1.’ But we’ll have to wait and see. If Tom Grennan’s looking a little bit leggy, I might have to hook him off. Obviously that will have to go via Tyson Fury. I’m quite small, he’s quite tall, so getting into his ear is gonna be a bit tough, but I’m gonna give it a go. I might get power drunk and then just be like, ‘Tyson, take a back seat.’ And he’s gonna be like, ‘Sam, sit down.’”

Sam was told he could no longer play in the match after being assessed by a medic. He was lined up to play for England – alongside Louis Tomlinson. All eyes have been on the pair and their awkward interactions after Louis started dating Sam’s ex Zara McDermott. Sam has insisted there are “no hard feelings” between the guys.

Sam, 32, and former Love Islander Zara, 28, called time on their five-year relationship shortly before Christmas. Zara is said to have moved on with One Direction singer Louis, 33, in March.

Ahead of the charity match, Sam took part in a gruelling challenge, running and cycling 260 miles, delivering the match ball from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford. His journey was documented for ITV One’s Sam Thompson’s Match Ball Mission for Soccer Aid.

Sam said his challenge has changed his outlook on life, likening it to therapy and say it’s made him more grateful for everything he’s got. “It’s the most important thing I’ve done in my 32 years of life,” he said. “Getting to go to Guatemala, getting to see what UNICEF do on the ground, it’s just life changing. The past four months have been a whirlwind. There’s so much that’s happened in that space of time. While their lives have remained the exact same.

“I left a lot out on that road. I remember at the end of Thursday, I went silent for an hour and a half on the bike. And that’s weird for me. I was really struggling. I just cried on the bike as I was cycling. You really realise why we were all there and what we were doing. It’s the quietest I’ve ever been.”

Soccer Aid for UNICEF 2025 will take place tomorrow at Old Trafford, Manchester and will be shown live exclusively on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player. Donate to UNICEF ahead of the match at socceraid.org.uk/donate. This year, thanks to the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, every donation you make to Soccer Aid for UNICEF will be doubled – up to £5 million.

‘Sky the limit’ for treble winners Bath – Spencer

Captain Ben Spencer says the “sky is the limit” for Bath after they ended a 29-year wait for a Premiership trophy and clinched a historic treble.

Spencer lifted the trophy at Allianz Stadium Twickenham on Saturday after a tense, closely-fought 23-21 final victory against Leicester Tigers.

Bath added their first league title since 1996 to Premiership Rugby Cup and European Challenge Cup silverware won earlier this campaign.

“The future of this club is unbelievably bright, no matter who pulls on the shirt it’s next man in,” Spencer said.

Spencer joined Bath in 2020 after nine years with Saracens where he won seven major trophies – including four Premiership titles – through the London club’s era of dominance.

The 32-year-old was made captain in 2022-23 as head of rugby Johann van Graan’s tenure at Bath began, just months after the club had finished bottom of the league the season before.

“The amount of hard work this has taken to turn the ship around… we were bottom three years ago,” added Spencer.

“I can’t credit [Van Graan] enough, he’s been absolutely brilliant. If we [understand] there’s always an opportunity to get better then I’m really excited for the next couple of years.”

Bath narrowly lost to Northampton in the Twickenham showpiece last June but were overwhelming favourites this time around.

They ended the regular league campaign 11 points clear at the top of the table and wrapped up top spot and a home semi-final in the play-offs with three rounds of games still to play.

Scrum-half Spencer said he mainly felt “relief” at the final whistle because of the prolonged build-up.

“To get the mindset right when you qualify early as we did is quite tough,” he said.

“I played that semi-final in my head hundreds of times. Day in, day out it was, ‘who are we going to get?’ It’s a hard place to be mentally.

‘Champion teams win things multiple times’

Van Graan said his side had done the “unthinkable” in winning the league title three years after he took over.

The squad will now go their separate ways over the summer, with international commitments, including the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia.

They will not reconvene until a pre-season camp in September but Van Graan said the ambition to keep getting better will not diminish.

“I’ll set the vision we’ll align as a group and we’ll take whatever’s next – champion teams are teams that win things multiple times,” he added.

“The day you stand still is the day somebody catches you.

“I learned in my time at [South African club] Bulls when I was part of a team that won a lot, you must always train like number two because the other guys are coming.

“We’ll look at ourselves and we’ll go again. It’s a journey, there’s no end point.”
