Matthew Perry death sees second doctor Dr Mark Chavez receive sentence

A second doctor to have pleaded guilty surrounding the death of Matthew Perry has received his sentence. The Friends icon died aged 54 after he was found drowned in the hot tub at his home after taking ketamine in 2023.

Now, Dr Mark Chavez has received his sentence. In October 2024, Chavez pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine. And he lined up a deal following further arrests in the case.

The doctor admitted to selling ketamine to Dr. Salvador Plasencia. This is then said to have been sold to the actor in the weeks prior to his overdose.

On Tuesday, Chavez was sentenced to eight months’ home confinement. United States District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett also ordered him to complete 300 hours of community service.

Prosecutors had said that the ketamine obtained by Chavez had been done so fraudulently. It’s claimed he submitted a prescription in the name of a patient without the patient’s knowledge or consent.

Chavez’s sentence comes weeks after a first doctor found out their own fate. Plasencia received a 30 months prison sentence after pleading guilty to four counts of distributing ketamine.

During the hearing, Plasencia broke into tears. He apologised to Perry’s family as he said: “I should have protected him.”

He also said he would one day need to tell his son, who is two, “about the time I didn’t protect another mother’s son.” Speaking to the court, the doctor said: “I failed Matthew Perry. I should have protected him… I’m just so sorry.”

Ahead of Plasencia’s sentencing, Perry’s dad John and stepmum Debbie wrote an emotional letter as part of a ‘victim impact statement’ submitted to the judge. It read: “Your motives? I can’t imagine. A doctor whose life is devoted to helping people?”

Judge Sherilyn Peace also told Plasencia: “You and others helped Mr Perry on the road to such an ending by continuing to feed his ketamine addiction. You exploited Mr Perry’s addiction for your own profit.”

The doctor is one of five people who have pleaded guilty to giving Perry drugs. Others include British woman Jasveen Sangha, 42, who is dubbed the “ketamine queen”.

Plasencia, who runs an urgent care clinic in California, had been set to go on trial in August prior to reaching a plea agreement. His attorneys had previously argued prison time is unnecessary given “the punishment Mr. Plasencia has already experienced, and will continue to experience for many years to come”.

What’s behind South America’s shift to the right?

Chileans have elected their most conservative leader in decades.

Chile has joined South America’s shift to the right, electing Jose Antonio Kast, a hardline conservative, as president.

He tapped into voters’ fears about a rise in crime and migration, and an economic crisis.

His victory marks a significant shift since the end of military rule more than 30 years ago.

It also comes as other populist conservatives have taken office in the region.

From Bolivia to Argentina to El Salvador, the move to the right is being watched closely, particularly by the United States.

But what does it all mean for the political dynamics in South America?

Rob Reiner’s eldest daughter breaks silence with heartbreaking statement after dad’s murder

Hollywood director Rob Reiner’s eldest child spoke of her shock at the death of her father and his wife, Michele Singer Reinter, as their son Nick Reiner remains in custody

Rob Reiner’s eldest child has spoken for the first time since the horrific death of the Hollywood director and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. Tracy Reiner, 61, was adopted by Rob during his marriage to Penny Marshall.

And now, she has shared a heartbreaking comment after Rob and Michele were found dead in their Los Angeles home at the weekend. Tracy revealed she is in shock following the news.

Rob and Michele’s son Nick, 32, is currently in custody without bail. It’s said the case will be turned over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office today, according to officials.

Speaking to NBC News after the sad news, Tracy said: “I came from the greatest family ever. I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”

And she revealed she had seen her dad just a day earlier at a family gathering. According to People, the couple’s daughter, Romy, was the person to have found their bodies inside their Brentwood home.

As the horrifying details begin to emerge, it’s claimed the couple were found in rigor mortis. According to TMZ, when police arrived on the scene at around 3:40 PM on Sunday, rigor mortis appeared to have set in Rob and Michele’s bodies. This would mean they had been deceased for hours before their daughter Romy arrived.

Shocking images released on Tuesday show the moment Nick Reiner was arrested for the murders of his dad Rob Reiner and mum Michele Singer Reiner. Nick, 32, was seen being surrounded by police and handcuffed at an LA subway station, 15 miles from his parents’ house.

Police said that after their initial homicide investigation at the Reiners’ home, it was “further revealed” that Nick “was responsible for their deaths”. Oscar-nominated Rob, who directed beloved films including Spinal Tap and When Harry Met Sally, and wife Michele were found in their Los Angeles family home with stab wounds.

Nick had been set to appear in court on Tuesday. However, his lawyer confirmed he had not been “medically cleared”.

Speaking outside of court, defence attorney Alan Jackson confirmed to reporters on Tuesday morning that he will be representing Reiner. And he went on to tell the media outside Los Angeles Superior Court that his client would not be making his first court appearance on Tuesday.

In a video published on TMZ, Jackson said: “Every inmate has to be medically cleared before they can be transported to court. He has not been medically cleared, it is just a procedural issue.”

Asked if the case had been “filed” he replied: “I have not received any file and I do not believe the court has received any file at this point. I am not commenting any further other than procedure of the court today.

“We will be back day to day…hopefully he will be cleared tomorrow and we can get in there.”

Rob Reiner and wife Michele ‘had throats slit in bed’ as new details emerge

Rob Reiner and his wife Michele are thought to have had their “throats slit in bed” and are said to have been lying dead for hours by the time their daughter discovered them

Rob Reiner and his wife Michele are reported to have been “in bed” when they died. The bodies of filmmaking legend Rob and his photographer wife Michele, who was 68, were found at their Brentwood mansion on Sunday with their daughter, Romy, making the harrowing discovery.

The couple had suffered multiple knife wounds and the following day it was announced that the Reiners’ middle son Nick had been arrested on suspicion of the double murder of his famous parents.

Now, an insider has claimed that their killings took place in the middle of the night. A source told the Daily Mail whoever killed them went there “in the middle of the night” and slit their throats. They added: “They were in bed when that happened.”

One report by Showbiz 411 claimed that Michele was still alive when her daughter found them and died on the way to hospital, but Los Angeles Police Department insiders have insisted that this was not the case.

LAPD sources told TMZ that “rigor mortis appeared to have set in Rob and Michele’s bodies,” and this would mean that the pair had been dead for hours by the time they were discovered.

Nick Reiner’s defence attorney Alan Jackson has confirmed to reporters on Tuesday morning that he will be representing Reiner. He went on to tell the media outside Los Angeles Superior Court that his client would not be making his first court appearance on Tuesday because he hadn’t been medically cleared.

As Hollywood tries to make sense of the shocking double-murder, it has emerged that the director and his son, several sources have claimed to PEOPLE, got into a fiery dispute at a Christmas party the night before, hosted by Conan O’Brian. It followed a report by TMZ on Monday which claimed that the moviemaker, who was 78, and his son were embroiled in a “very loud argument”.

One of the sources claimed to PEOPLE: “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous.” It has now been revealed that Nick became ‘disruptive and upset’ when his parents expressed their worries about his health at Conan’s party, reports NBC. It’s reported that Rob and Michele then left the party following the set-to, according to TMZ.

Nick had accompanied his parents to the event, and sources later claimed to NBC that the couple were both upset and embarrassed by his behaviour.

They claimed that the screenwriter had interrupted a conversation between filmmaker Bill Hader and two other guests and when told it was a private conversation – stood still and stared at the group, before storming off in a rage. Just hours later, Rob and Michelle Reiner were found dead in their Los Angeles home. The LA Fire Department called to the gruesome scene at around 3.30pm local time, to provide medical aid.

First responders discovered Rob and Michele’s bodies. Although officials did not release any further details, a police source who spoke to the Associated Press believe the couple suffered brutal stab wounds and were found with their throats slit. Their son Nick, 32, was later arrested on suspicion of murder and is now being held without bail.

Trump’s approval rating drops to 39% amid economic concerns: US poll

A new poll suggests that the number of people in the United States who approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as president has dropped to 39 percent as concerns grow over the state of the economy.

The poll released by Reuters/Ipsos on Tuesday indicated Trump’s approval rating is down about 2 points from 41 percent earlier this month, a decline driven partly by growing economic dissatisfaction among members of Trump’s own Republican Party.

Just 33 percent of respondents expressed approval of Trump’s handling of economic issues, the lowest level since he took office for a second time in January.

Growing affordability woes could be a serious political liability for Trump and his allies, who campaigned in 2024 on a promise to address inflation and concerns around the cost of living.

A recent Politico poll found high levels of anxiety in the US over expenses such as healthcare, groceries and housing with 55 percent of respondents assigning Trump’s policies some responsibility for increasing food prices.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll also suggested Trump’s approval rating on cost-of-living issues dropped to 27 percent from 31 percent earlier in December. Among Republicans, approval of his handling of the economy dropped to 72 percent from 78 percent.

‘Golden age’

Trump has denied rising prices are squeezing Americans, calling concerns over affordability a “hoax” being perpetrated by hostile media coverage and Democratic rivals and insisting that the US economy is in a “golden age”. In remarks last week, Trump said he was “crushing” inflation and “prices are coming down tremendously.”

Some Democrats have relished watching Trump reprise the arguments of his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden, who was criticised for insisting during his 2021-2025 presidency that Americans’ frustrations over inflation and the cost of living were being exaggerated.

Praise for people who died while trying to stop Bondi Beach attackers

While a Sydney shopowner is being hailed as a hero after disarming one of the gunmen shooting at a Jewish holiday event at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, a couple and another man who died after physically confronting the attackers are also being remembered for their heroic efforts to save those around them.

Reuven Morrison, 62, was shot dead after trying to stop the gunmen, his daughter Sheina Gutnick told US broadcaster CBS News in a report published on Monday.

“He had jumped the second the shooting started. He managed to throw bricks. He was screaming at the terrorist and protecting his community,” she said. “If there is one way for him to go on this Earth, it would be fighting a terrorist.”

Morrison’s actions are visible in several videos posted on social media. After 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, a Muslim father-of-two, charged one of the gunmen from behind and disarmed him, a man is seen chasing the attacker and hurling something at him.

Morrison, who originally came to Australia from the former USSR to escape anti-Semitic persecution, was later shot and killed, according to Gutnick.

“[Australia] is where he was going to have a family, where he is going to live a life away from persecution,” she said. “And for many years, he did do that; he lived a wonderful, free life. Until Australia turned on him.”

A year prior, Morrison had been interviewed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

“We came here with the view that Australia is the safest country in the world and the Jews would not be faced with such anti-Semitism in the future, where we can bring up our kids in a safe environment,” he told the outlet in December 2024 when asked about the firebombing of the Adass Synagogue in Melbourne.

‘These Australians are heroes’: Albanese

Ahmed, meanwhile, is recovering in hospital after surgery for bullet wounds and donations to support him have topped 2 million Australian dollars (US$1.33m).

Morrison was one of 15 people killed in what is Australia’s worst mass shooting in nearly 30 years. Officials allege a father and son are the gunmen and say the attack is being investigated as an “act of terrorism” targeting the Jewish community.

Another couple, who have not yet been identified, were also filmed tackling one of the attackers to try and stop him before apparently being shot dead.

The dashcam footage, verified by the Reuters news agency, showed one shooter wrestling for a long-barrelled weapon with an older man in a lavender shirt and shorts, before both fall heavily to the ground behind a silver hatchback car.

The man in lavender, who is with a woman, gets up with the weapon as the footage moves on. Separate drone video shows the man and woman lying motionless next to the vehicle beside the pedestrian bridge where the gunmen were later shot by police.

“An elderly man by the roadside did not run away – instead, he charged straight toward the danger, using all his strength trying to wrestle away the gun and fighting to the death,” said dashcam owner Jenny, who shared the footage with Reuters.

“I can see from my camera that the elderly man was ultimately shot and collapsed. That moment broke my heart,” she added.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese earlier this week praised the actions of Australians who had “run towards danger in order to help others”.
