Jill Scott addresses claim women ‘can’t have banter’ as iconic series reaches end

Jill Scott is best known for her impressive football career but has made the move into TV over recent years, lifting the I’m A Celeb trophy back in 2022

A League of Their Own is bowing out with its last ever series – and presenter Jill Scott is definitely going to miss messing about with her male co-stars, Romesh Ranganathan, Jamie Redknapp and Micah Richards. “On this show, you’re just one of the lads really,” she tells us.

“Sometimes people think that women are more sensitive or you can’t have banter and stuff like that. But hopefully this shows that if you’re in an environment where you trust people, and you’re friends with people, the banter and everything can be taken in a light-hearted way.”

Former England footy star Jill, 38, joined the irreverent Sky show as a team captain in July 2023, but she found her arrival a little daunting. “The lights came on, and I was like, ‘It’s such an iconic show. Wow, this is massive.’ But straightaway, Romesh, Micah and Jamie made me feel so at ease, and I think it’s a credit to them that we created this environment where we can just say what we want because there’s no bad intent.”

After more than a decade of outrageous challenges and quick-fire banter, the 20th series will be the final outing, bringing us everything from wacky assault courses to popstar penalties and extreme crazy golf.

Special guests will include Josh Widdicombe, Jon Richardson, Maya Jama, Chris McCausland, Tom Davis, Maisie Adam, Alex Brooker, while Jill is especially looking forward to the footballers making an appearance – including Lionesses heroine Chloe Kelly, plus England stars Wayne Rooney and Harry Maguire.

“I’m so excited to get Wayne on,” she says. “He’s so funny – he’s got such a dry sense of humour. And he’s one of the best footballers to ever play the game. With the sports stars, you really get an insight into the stories that you wouldn’t hear after they’ve played a game, because it’s a much more relaxed environment.”

Speaking of her personal highlights over the years, she says, “It’s just seeing people dressed up as stupid things, like in the human dart game. You’d never expect to see Micah Richards dressed as a dart, would you? We also played hockey on lubricated floors where you’d just go absolutely flying. I love the fun and madness of it all.”

Jill says one of her most memorable experiences made her tackle one of her biggest fears. “My favourite challenge, which wasn’t my favourite when I first got told I was doing it, was riding a bike along a tightrope, which was really high up. That was definitely the scariest. I hate heights, and people say, the more you do it, the better it gets. But I am still as terrified of heights as I was at the beginning.”

The star, who also took part in I’m A Celeb… in 2022, says viewers can expect even more craziness than usual as the final series **airs. “**I think the games have definitely stepped up,” she says. “The handbrake is definitely off.”

She’s hoping to remain in contact with her co-stars long after the final credits roll. “I’m sure we’ll all keep in touch, and still grab a coffee together,” she says. “They’ve definitely become friends.”

While there are mixed emotions about such a TV staple coming to an end, Jill says there’s plenty to be upbeat about. “It’s been so fun,” she says.

“I think we have to look at this last series as a celebration of the whole show and all the series that have gone before. It’s such an iconic show, so we’ve got to go out with a bang. It’s one of the best shows I’ve ever been part of, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Sinner maintains 100% record with win over Shelton

Defending champion Jannik Sinner attributed his straight-set victory over Ben Shelton in the penultimate group match of the ATP Finals to his mental strength.

The Italian, who had already secured top spot in Bjorn Borg Group after winning his opening two matches, triumphed 6-3 7-6 (7-3) to advance to the knockout stages without dropping a set or losing a service game.

The 24-year-old has not lost a match since being forced to retire because of cramp from his third-round match at October’s Shanghai Masters, winning titles in Vienna and Paris along the way, while his most recent indoor defeat came at this tournament in 2023.

Sinner will face Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the semi-finals while Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who has secured the year-end number one ranking for the second time in his career, is awaiting the winner of Alexander Zverev’s meeting with Felix Auger-Aliassime later on Friday.

Already eliminated Shelton took an aggressive approach in the first set, utilising his athleticism to rush the net, particularly on Sinner’s second serve where he won five of eight points.

But, as happened in Sinner’s victory over Zverev on Wednesday where he saved all seven break points he faced, the second seed was clinical in the key moments.

He converted two of his three break-point opportunities, striking in the first and ninth games, produced a run of big first serves, including two aces, to save a break point on his own serve, and struck 13 winners to Shelton’s eight.

Both players were efficient on serve in the second set, with Sinner giving up just seven points across six service matches and Shelton holding three of his own to love while also saving the only break point of the set in the 10th game.

Arg reunites with Gemma Collins at Winter Wonderland years after brutal ‘hippo’ texts

James Argent and Gemma Collins seemed cheerful as they reunited at Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland years on from a bitter split where Gemma revealed her ex had called her a ‘hippo’

Former TOWIE lovers James ‘Arg’ Argent and Gemma Collins stunned fans yesterday as they reunited for a festive night out.

The pair were seen at Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland five years after their explosive split and Arg’s infamous messages branding her a “hippo”.

The exes, who shared a turbulent on-off romance that almost spanned a decade, appeared to have put their rocky past behind them as they laughed and chatted in front of a stall serving beer and wine.

The pair looked upbeat and smiley as they sipped drinks and mingled with their friends, even stepping aside to have an animated personal conversation at one point.

Arg and Gemma first got together in 2012 and quickly became one of TOWIE’s most talked-about couples, partially due to their frequent fiery rows.

Their relationship finally imploded in 2020 when Gemma publicly shared abusive messages Arg had sent her, calling her a “hippo”, a “fat f***” and claiming she had “more rolls than Greggs ”.

But in 2021, after getting gastric sleeve surgery and shedding almost 11 stone, Arg publicly expressed regret for how he had treated Gemma.

He told The Sun: “Anything negative I’ve said about anyone I deeply regret and I apologise for. A lot of the time, when you say negative things about other people, you’re really saying it about yourself. It’s self-hatred.”

Arg has also spoken openly about the darkest period in his life, which saw him battling binge-eating and isolating himself during lockdown, until his mother burst into tears after seeing him, which gave the reality star a wake-up call.

While Arg has been on his own journey of rediscovery since their split, Gemma’s life has also transformed dramatically. The 44-year-old is now happily engaged to her long-time love Rami Hawash, who has supported her since long before she became famous.

When she first met Rami, she wasn’t a glamorous TV star but a car saleswoman working a normal job. Gemma recently revealed that it was Rami who encouraged her to take the leap into full-time television work, and even financially supported her while she pursued her dream of being a reality TV star.

She wrote: “Years ago when I met Rami I was selling cars! I then gave it all up for £50 a day but it was the best risk I took, and wouldn’t change it for the world. Rami would always say to me you’re gonna make it, you will be successful and would give me money for my hair make up outfit.”

Gemma added that he would hand her £100 every morning so she could get to filming, calling him her “forever love” as the couple prepare to launch their own TV show together.

The TOWIE star has already revealed she is eyeing up 2026 for their wedding, and told fans she wants a whimsical, woodland ceremony inspired by her love of Maleficent.

Despite their messy history, in the past few years Arg has maintained that he wishes Gemma well, and approves of her reunion with Rami.

He previously told The Sun: “I’m very pleased that she started dating Rami again because I’m actually quite fond of him, he’s a nice guy.”

MLS To Align Calendar With World’s Top Football Leagues

Major League Soccer will change its competition schedule in 2027 to align with the world’s top football leagues, in a decision commissioner Don Garber on Thursday called one of the most important in the history of the 30-year-old league.

The North American league currently runs from late February through early December, including the regular season and the MLS Cup playoffs.

The change will see the season kick off in mid-July and run through May, with a winter break from mid-December to February.

“Today our owners made a decision that I think is one of the most important decisions in our league’s history,” Garber said during a virtual press conference after the MLS board of governors approved the change at its meeting in Palm Beach, Florida.

Garber said the shift will strengthen MLS clubs’ global competitiveness and create better opportunities in the transfer market.

“It marks the start of a new era for our league and for soccer in North America,” Garber said.

Before the first full season under the new schedule in 2027-2028, MLS will organize a shortened transition season from February to May 2027, with a regular season of 14 matches followed by playoffs.

Garber said that after two years of discussion and review, when it came time for a vote, there was “overwhelming support” for the shift, despite concerns such as weather difficulties for northernmost clubs, including those in Canada.

“Frankly, I think there was more support for it than I expected,” Garber said.

Toronto FC issued a statement of their own noting “challenges related to the weather for a number of the league’s most northern-based teams” but concluding that “the benefits to the future league product outweighed the potential challenges.”

Although the start and end dates will change, 90 percent of MLS matches will still be played within the “footprint” of the current schedule.

But the new calendar will synch better not only with the worldwide transfer windows but also with FIFA’s international windows.

This month, the league has paused the MLS Cup playoffs between the first and second rounds as players are released for international duty.

Changes are also in the offing for the league’s competition format. No details were disclosed but it has been reported that MLS will switch from its current Eastern and Western conference regular-season system to a single-table format.

Apple TV streaming

MLS and Apple TV also announced on Thursday that beginning in 2026, league matches will be available to subscribers of the streaming service without the additional purchase of the MLS Season Pass package.

The move comes after the league announced that this year’s MLS Cup playoffs would be available to all Apple TV subscribers.

Apple TV acquired the exclusive global broadcasting rights for the MLS in 2022 through a decade-long agreement valued at approximately $2.5 billion.

The platform began streaming the league in 2023, the year it gained global attention with Argentine superstar Lionel Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami.

MLS and Apple are eyeing a growth in interest in football as the United States co-hosts the World Cup with Mexico and Canada next year.

In addition to the MLS regular season and playoffs, Apple TV will also offer the Leagues Cup, the annual joint tournament between MLS and Mexican league clubs, as well as the All-Star Game and other special events.

UN rights council orders probe of ‘appalling’ abuses in Sudan’s el-Fasher

The United Nations’s top human rights body has ordered a probe into abuses in Sudan’s el-Fasher, where mass killings have been reported since the city fell to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) last month.

During a special session in Geneva on Friday, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution ordering the UN’s Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan to urgently investigate violations in el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state.

The resolution also called on the investigative team to “identify, where possible” suspected perpetrators in an effort to ensure they are “held accountable”.

The move comes weeks after the RSF, which has been battling the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) for control of Sudan since April 2023, took full control of el-Fasher on October 26 after an 18-month siege on the city.

Nearly 100,000 people have fled el-Fasher since the RSF’s takeover, with displaced Sudanese civilians saying they faced indiscriminate attacks and sexual violence, among other abuses. Many said they saw dead bodies lining the streets.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk told the council on Friday that the “atrocities that are unfolding in el-Fasher were foreseen and preventable” and “constitute the gravest of crimes”.

He said the UN had warned that the fall of el-Fasher “would result in a bloodbath”.

“So none of us should be surprised by reports that since the RSF took control of el-Fasher, there have been mass killings of civilians, ethnically targeted executions, sexual violence including gang rape, abductions for ransom, widespread arbitrary detentions, attacks on health facilities, medical staff and humanitarian workers, and other appalling atrocities,” Turk said.

“The international community has a clear duty to act. There has been too much pretence and performance and too little action. It must stand up against these atrocities, a display of naked cruelty used to subjugate and control an entire population.”

Violence spreading

The RSF has denied targeting civilians or blocking aid, saying such activities are due to rogue actors.

But the UN, human rights groups and other observers have said evidence suggests that mass killings were committed by the paramilitary group.

Sudanese medics have also warned that the RSF appears to be trying to bury the bodies of those killed in el-Fasher in an effort to conceal what happened.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people are believed to remain trapped in the city, prompting the head of the UN’s migration agency this week to urgently call for a ceasefire and a humanitarian corridor to provide aid to those civilians.

During Friday’s Human Rights Council session, Mona Rishmawi, a member of the UN’s independent fact-finding mission on Sudan, described examples of rape, killing and torture and said a comprehensive investigation is required to establish the full picture.

She said RSF forces had turned el-Fasher University, where thousands of civilians had been sheltering, “into a killing ground”.

Meanwhile, Turk warned that violence is “surging” to the neighbouring Kordofan region, where bombardments, blockades and forced displacement have been reported. “Kordofan must not suffer the same fate as Darfur,” he said.

The council, which is made up of 47 UN member countries, does not have the power to force countries or others to comply, but can shine a spotlight on rights violations and help document them for possible use in places like the International Criminal Court (ICC).
