The Dutch Royal Palace has issued another update on future Queen of the Netherlands Princess Catharina-Amalia, who was rushed to hospital after falling from a horse

A palace update has been issued on a future queen who was rushed to hospital following a fall from her horse. Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, who is heir to the throne and is known as a keen equestrian, suffered the fall that saw her rushed to hospital with a broken upper arm earlier this week.

She had to undergo surgery to treat the break at a hospital in the city of Utrecht. The Dutch Royal Palace later confirmed that the surgery went well and that she had suffered a “fracture in her upper arm”. Her accident also means that a summer photo session that Amalia had been scheduled to attend today has now had to be postponed until later in the month.

Catharina-Amalia, 21, is the eldest child of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands and both were informed of their daughter’s accident.

At an engagement yesterday, King Willem-Alexander spoke about his daughter, telling reporters: “I can say that I was very impressed by how brave she was with immense pain. And that she took it very calmly. We are very proud of her, how she got through the operation.”

Amalia has been heir to the throne in the Netherlands since 2013 when her father King Willem-Alexander became King. She has two younger sisters Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane.

In 2022, she was forced to move out of her university accommodation after fears she could have been kidnapped by organised gangs. She was placed under heightened security due to concern that she could be targeted by criminals.

However, she isn’t the only royal in the past year to have suffered injuries as a result of a horse. Last June, Princess Anne suffered a major concussion, thought to have been caused by a horse.

The King’s sister had set out alone and on foot to feed her chickens on her Gatcombe estate in Gloucestershire before becoming involved in an incident, where she is believed to have been struck from behind by a horse, that left her concussed and badly bruised.

The Princess was rushed to hospital by ambulance and was treated as an in-patient before being discharged several days later to convalesce at home. At the time Buckingham Palace said she had been admitted “as a precautionary measure for observation”, but the princess later revealed the true horror of the accident.

On her return to Southmead Hospital in Bristol where she was treated, Anne met paramedics and members of the critical care team who treated her at the scene, as well as those who cared for her in the ICU, which had not previously been known.

The Princess told hospital staff that it was “useful” to meet them as she was still unable to recall what happened. After touring the intensive care unit and chatting to several medics, including Morwenna Maddock, the ICU matron who oversaw her care, the Princess gave a short speech thanking them for their efforts.

“You’ve been filling in the blanks, which partly, from my perspective, is really useful to know how it happened, because I seriously don’t have any idea, and sadly, I don’t have huge memories of being in here either,” she said.

On Saturday, she is expected to be seen riding in public for the first time since her accident when she takes part in Trooping the Colour, with her tipped to take part in the procession on horseback.

Brits who share their name with a celebrity become ‘instantly memorable’

Most Brits wouldn’t be able to avoid the topic if they met someone with the same name as a celebrity

Taylor Swift, David Beckham and Beyoncé are among the famous names that Brits have encountered in real life. Some have met people sharing names with celebrities such as James Martin, Ian Wright and Martin Lewis, while others have come across common names like Emma Watson, Tom Cruise and Jennifer Lopez.

Research suggests that meeting someone who shares a name with a celebrity leaves a lasting impression and makes that person instantly more memorable. A fifth confessed they’d be tempted to ask about it if they met them. It was found that 56% of people would never forget someone with a celebrity name, as 29% believe it’s a brilliant ice breaker.

The study revealed that 13% of those surveyed share a first or last name with a big-name star, according to figures from OnePoll.com. The topic of their name is regularly brought up in conversation, and for a quarter they find these encounters amusing.

The research was carried out to launch Blue Light Card’s new ticketing platform which offers free and discounted tickets to exclusive events to members of the emergency services, NHS, social care sector, teaching community, and armed forces; as a way of saying thank you.

To celebrate the launch, five women named Mrs Carter were treated to a VIP experience at Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter concert in London. The experience included glamorous makeovers and a paparazzi-style photoshoot.

Mrs Addy Carter from Colchester, who has dedicated over five years as a military medic, opened up about the gratification her role brings: “As a medic in the Armed Forces, I get to help people every day and can be deployed overseas to assist with humanitarian aid at a moment’s notice.

“Being able to support people with injuries – to make them feel safe and cared for – makes me so happy and proud of what I do. Wherever I’m based, I know I’m making a difference. As part of my work, I also see the incredible effort of NHS staff, which really inspires me.”

Reflecting on her experience at the Cowboy Carter Tour, she shared: “I’ve had so much fun meeting some other inspiring Mrs Carters from different industries and hearing about what they do.

“We got glitz and glammed and treated like superstars for a night at the Cowboy Carter Tour to celebrate the launch of Blue Light Tickets.”

Tarun Gidoomal, CCO for Blue Light Card, celebrated their community heroes by saying “Our community are superstars. While one Mrs Carter entertains a stadium, ours continue to serve the nation and whether that’s saving lives or supporting their communities, they show up day in, day out.”

He also highlighted the challenges that members face when trying to enjoy live music due to conflicting schedules: “Our members told us that they struggle to access live music, with queueing systems and ticket drops clashing with shift patterns.

‘Summer in a bottle’ Estée Lauder perfume now has 20% off and ‘smells expensive’

Estée Lauder’s iconic Bronze Goddess perfume now comes in a number of variations, but this is the one that beauty editor Laura Mulley thinks is worth your money

We love this Estée Lauder scent(Image: Getty)

There are few fragrances worthy of Perfume Hall of Fame status, but Estée Lauder’s Bronze Goddess is one of them. This warm, coconutty, vanilla-rich floral scent is one of the bestselling summer fragrances, and it’s easy to see why.

Since it launched in 2008, Estée Lauder has launched a few spinoff and limited-edition Bronze Goddess scents, all with similar notes to the original (tiare flower, coconut, amber, sandalwood and vanilla) but with slight twists. I’ve tried them all and this one (now a permanent edition) is, I think, the best of the bunch – and it’s cheaper than the orginal.

Bronze Goddess Nuit Eau de Parfum is a slightly more sultry, sensual version, yet still has warm, beachy vibes of the much-loved classic. Its fragrance notes include bergamot essence, ylang ylang and pepper, along with coconut and white florals like the orginal Eau Fraiche.

For me, it’s my go-to perfume when I want to be reminded of sunnier days, a grown up ‘solar scent’ (or sun cream scent), a fragrance trend that has become popular in recent years, especially in summer.

Bronze Goddess Nuit is available to buy in 50ml and 100ml bottles from retailers including Boots, John Lewis and Sephora, although the cheapest place you’ll currently find it is on Lookfantastic, where it’s currently £49 instead of the usual £70 – that’s a saving of 30%.

It’s clearly a hit with shoppers too, as almost all the reviews online have given it five out of five stars, calling it “great for holidays and summer”:

“Love this perfume it’s just like the original except with added scent of coconut. Smells just like expensive sun cream,” this customer continued.

“I kept seeing people saying that this smells like summer in a bottle and they were not wrong! Smells like beautiful, expensive sun cream. Gorgeous!” another agreed.

“This perfume smells so nice – sweet and sultry,” a third reads. “It has a floral beginning but sets with a woody undertone. The perfect blend of jasmine and salted coconut notes makes it an easy choice for a summer night.”

If you’re looking for something a little more floral you might like this other Estée Lauder iteration, Bronze Goddess Flora Verde Eau de Parfum, a vibrant, floral take on the classic inspired by the carnival spirit of Rio de Janeiro. A 50ml bottle usually costs £70 but it’s currently reduced to £59.50 on Sephora.

Ed Sheeran’s bitter family rift as star faces backlash for ‘identifying culturally’ as Irish

Ed Sheeran’s confession that he identifies culturally as Irish caused backlash online, but his heritage comes after his grandparents’ love story which was portrayed in his hit tune, Nancy Mulligan

Ed Sheeran opened up to Louis Theroux

Ed Sheeran has faced backlash following his candid interview with Louis Theroux, in which the singer claimed he ‘identifies culturally’ as Irish. The Shape of You star, 34, opened up to the journalist on his podcast, revealing his family’s heritage.

Ed, who was born in Halifax and raised in Suffolk before moving to London to pursue his dreams, recalled his childhood holidays to Ireland. He explained to Louis how his dad, one of eight siblings, is from Belfast. He was born to Nancy Mulligan and William Sheeran.

While Nancy was a Catholic from the Republic of Ireland, William was a Protestant who was born in Northern Ireland. The duo fell in love during the Second World War, with their connection causing tension on both sides of the family.

Despite the furore from their families, Nancy and William enjoyed a marriage spanning almost seven decades. William died in 2013, while Ed mourned his grandmother’s death in 2023, aged 98.

The bitter fallout was Ed’s inspiration behind his huge hit from 2017 titled after his grandmother. During her funeral, Ed’s dad referenced the love story in his speech.

He said: “Mum met Dad, a dental student, at a Guy’s nurses’ home party. Friendship turned into love, but the Northern Ireland Presbyterian side of dad’s family did their utmost to end the relationship.

“Their wedding was attended by only one family member – mum’s twin sister Peggy. They lived above that dental surgery in South London with a growing family. Eventually five boys and three girls. Mum joked to us that she had originally wanted 11 children so she could feel the football or cricket team.”

Speaking of his heritage, Ed told The Louis Theroux Podcast. “I class my culture as Irish. I think that’s what I grew up with. My mum’s family is very, very small, it’s her and her parents, and my dad’s family is… he’s got seven brothers and sisters.

“We’d spend all of our holidays in Ireland. My first musical experiences were in Ireland, I grew up with trad music in the house. So I identify culturally as Irish, but I was obviously born and raised in Britain.”.

He added: “I do feel like my culture is something that I’m really proud of and grew up with and want to express. And I feel like just because I was born in Britain doesn’t necessarily mean that I have to just be (British), there’s loads of people I know that are half this or quarter this.”

He also admitted the country was “basically my second home musically”. ” I’d say Ireland is the place that I am most successful musically,” he claimed.

However, he was met with mixed response to his comments online. “They can have him,” one Twitter/X user fumed. “Why can’t he just identify as himself,” asked another.

There were comments of support too, though, with one user explaining: “It’s not where you’re born. It’s your bloodline that determines what you are.

“Cliff Richard was born in India. Is he Indian? You can be born anywhere in the world. That doesn’t automatically make you part of that culture.”

And Ed also reiterated the point in a response online. He commented: “My dad is Irish. My family is Irish. I have an Irish passport. The culture I was brought up around is Irish.

“The first music I learnt was Irish. Just coz I was born somewhere else doesn’t change my culture, I can be allowed to feel connection to a place half of my family is from.”

Lorraine says ‘I’ve got a belly’ as she issues blunt response over edited bikini snap

ITV Lorraine presenter Lorraine Kelly looked back on a segment from her chat show over 10 years ago, where she danced in a bikini live on air

Lorraine Kelly returned to our screens with a fresh episode of her ITV chat show on Thursday (12 June), where she chatted with celebs and delved into the latest entertainment gossip.

The beloved TV host tackled a range of topics, including the potentially harmful effects of social media filters on self-perception.

Joining Lorraine was Emily Clarkson, Jeremy Clarkson’s daughter, who is known for her candid Instagram posts about body positivity.

In a revealing segment, they displayed a photo of Lorraine in a bikini next to an altered version, highlighting the drastic changes that filters and editing can impose on images.

“It just shows you what you can do now,” Lorraine declared, recalling her initial reaction to the edited image, reports the Express.

She laughed off the transformation, saying, “It depends on what you’re using it for. They did it with me, and I looked at it, and I actually laughed! I thought, crikey!”

Lorraine pointed out the authenticity of the original photo, commenting: “That’s more kind of normal, I’ve got a belly, who hasn’t?”

She explained that the process involved perfecting the skin tone before “pulling you in”, while Emily remarked on how “too easy” it is to manipulate photos nowadays.

Lorraine also reminisced about a memorable moment from over a decade ago when she famously wore a bikini and danced with her co-stars live on her show.

She humorously confessed to slathering herself in fake tan for the filming, chuckling about her unsullied on-screen appearance: “I did lather on the fake tan, and, as you can see, I was the colour of a satsuma!”.

The beloved TV presenter couldn’t help but laugh as she expressed disbelief at her participation in the recently discussed segment.

Lucie Cave, who was present with the pair, praised Lorraine for her staunch stance against using filters, highlighting how she was a “champion” of natural beauty during a period when airbrushing and editing images were commonplace.

France to ban ads for Shein and Temu in crackdown on ‘ultra’ fast fashion giants

On June 10, the French Senate nearly unanimously passed a bill that seeks to regulate ‘ultra’ fast fashion giants Shein and Temu with strict sanctions and ad bans

The French Senate has overwhelmingly approved legislation to regulate ‘ultra’ fast fashion giants Shein and Temu. On June 10, the Senate passed a bill which would sanction companies with low “eco-scores” and prohibit fast fashion advertisements.

The bill directly targets Chinese e-commerce companies which have a reputation for selling products at extremely low prices. Environmental groups like Friends of the Earth have highlighted that Shein high product turnover “break[s] the market by selling at a loss” and “encourag[es] overconsumption and waste”.

The minister for ecological transition, Agnes Pannier-Runacher, called the bill “a major step in the fight against the economic and environmental impact of fast fashion and a strong signal sent to businesses and to consumers”.

Pannier-Runacher has called fast fashion a “triple threat” that promotes overconsumption, causes ecological damage and threatens French clothing businesses. The new bill was modified from a previous version that was passed by France’s lower house in 2024.

The new version focuses on ‘ultra’ fast fashion companies and is notably lenient on European offenders like Zara, H&M and Kiabi. The amendments have drawn criticism from environmental groups with Pierre Condamine, campaign manager at Friends of the Earth France, calling the bill a “missed opportunity” for “real environmental ambition”.

Jean-François Longeot, chair of the Senate’s Committee on regional planning and sustainable development, defended the amendment saying: “The [bill] clarifications make it possible to target players who ignore environmental, social, and economic realities, notably Shein and Temu, without penalising the European ready-to-wear sector”.

Help us improve our content by completing the survey below. We’d love to hear from you!

The bill will see the introduction of an “eco-score” system applicable to all fast fashion companies. Those receiving the lowest scores will face taxes of up to five euros per product in 2025, increasing to 10 euros by 2030 with a cap of 50 percent of the product’s original price.

The legislation would also ban fast fashion advertising and impose sanctions on influencers who promote such products.

A joint committee of senators and lower house deputies is expected to meet in September to produce a joint text, prior to the final adoption of the law. The European Commission also has to be notified, to ensure the bill complies with EU law prior to its adoption.

Speaking to RTL radio on Monday, Shein spokesperson Quentin Ruffat said that regulation of the fast fashion industry will only succeed with “collective effort” and not by targeting a “single actor”. Ruffat said the new law would “impact the purchasing power” of French people.

The approval of the French legislation comes just a few weeks after consumer watchdogs from 21 countries filed a formal complaint to EU authorities about Shein for “shaming” customers into buying more than they can afford.
