Huge Hollywood star unrecognisable as he transforms into Bruce Springsteen

A Hollywood leading man spent months learning The Boss’s distinctive vocals in a new biopic

Every painstaking note Jeremy Allen White sang as he strove to perfect Bruce Springsteen’s rasping tone made him certain who was The Boss. Aping Springsteen’s genius for his role in the new biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere, was always set to be a daunting task.

But the actor, who first found fame playing juvenile delinquent Lip Gallagher in the US version of Shameless, had not bargained on the Born to Run star shadowing him 24/7 on set. He laughs: “It was very hard. Especially because he’s sitting there the whole time.

“I had not had a lot of experience – or any experience – singing, playing guitar, any of it, before I took on the role. So that was daunting, to say the least, in the beginning. I had a lot of time, but I didn’t have as much time as I would have liked. You never do, you know? I had about six months to kind of learn.

“The chords are pretty simple. There’s not many of them. And a lot of the songs are in the same (chord). Yeah. But the singing was a gamble.”

Six months may sound to the uninitiated like a very long time. But there is a reason why Springsteen’s rugged, raspy, heartland voice has helped him sell 150 million records … he is pretty much inimitable.

To get somewhere close, White, 34, hired Hollywood vocal coach Eric Vetro to knock his vocal chords into shape. He says: “He helped Austin Butler with the Elvis movie and he helped Timothy Chalamet with the Bob Dylan movie. He’s kind of the ‘go-to’, you know?

“And he works with a lot of amazing, like vocalists and real singers and performers.” Worried if he could even sing, White continues: “Then you try to find a little bit of that rasp and then you start messing around with that nasal sound, that New Jersey phrasing.

“I really have to give Eric credit because he was there to say ‘this is how you sing a song. This is how you make it sound good.’ When I finally sounded like Bruce, that was like a breakthrough.”

And, according to The Boss himself, White – who will be appearing with Springsteen on BBC1 ’s Graham Norton show on October 17 – hit all the right notes, as he recreated his trademark New Jersey blue collar sound. He says: “I remember Bruce was great the first time he heard one of my pre-records, because he was like, ‘You sound like me, but you’re singing the song, you know? And you’re making the song your own. You’ve got your connection with the song”.

Audiences can see if they agree when Deliver Me From Nowhere is released in cinemas on October 24. The film shows Springsteen crafting his 1982 ‘left turn’ album Nebraska, after finding Billboard success with his seminal 1980 album The River.

Based on a book by Warren Zanes, it dramatises Springsteen’s journey to create the album, as he accelerates towards global stardom, which struck in 1984 when his multi million selling album Born in the USA exploded, with hits like Dancing in the Dark.

Springsteen was keen to ensure the movie was an accurate portrayal of this time. But, after showing his faith in White’s singing, the actor says it felt like Springsteen was giving him “permission” to keep going with his interpretation of his life.

In fact, the stars’ backgrounds are not a million miles apart. While Springsteen was born in New Jersey, White grew up in nearby Brooklyn – where he was teased onto the stage, aged around 14, by his parents, who were both former actors.

White, who was trained in ballet, tap and jazz as a child, remembers: “My mom grew up in North Carolina, went to North Carolina School of the Arts and studied acting there. But she moved to New York in the late 70s, early 80s, with the big dreams and my pops too. He grew up outside of Philadelphia and he moved there to pursue acting as well. I grew up in a household that was very supportive of the arts, the passion there, you know what I mean?”

White says he owes his success to a drama teacher, who drew the best out of him as a teenager. He says: “This teacher taught at a school in Brooklyn and I joined the class. And yeah, it was just an improv sort of exercise and in a black box, you know.

“I just remember the feeling of being able to focus, which was very hard for me as a young person and still is. But I remember the attention. I felt the eyes on me. And I felt people were waiting and like connected and wanted to see what was going to happen next. And I was like, ‘Oh, this is pretty cool.’ That space always feels insane. It was my teacher who planted the seed.”

Since his breakthrough in Shameless, White has established himself as one of Hollywood’s rising stars to watch, thanks to his role in the Hulu series The Bear, playing troubled New York chef Carmen Berzatto.

Said to be based loosely on the career of British Michelin star-winning chef Marco Pierre-White, the role won him two Critics Choice Television Awards, as well as three Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild gongs and two Emmys. Then, two years ago, White finally made it onto the big screen, playing the late American pro-wrestler Kerry Von Erich in the biographical sports film The Iron Claw.

And just last year, White graced billboards worldwide when he became global ambassador for Calvin Klein underwear, modelling the brand’s 2024 collection and generating a staggering $12.7m in advertising revenue. Next year looks to be even brighter for the actor, with a role in the Star Wars movie The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Attributing his growing success to his enthusiasm for learning, he continues: “I had a lot of energy as a kid and, like I said, it was very hard for me to focus. “My parents put me through everything. I was wrestling and I was playing soccer, I was playing baseball and doing all the stuff. They were like ‘We got to run this kid out.’

“It was fun. And it was that again, it was ‘eyes on you’. So, anyway, I think I was lucky in the start because I was like, ‘whatever, this is fun.’ And that’s the way to approach this thing. But the older you get, it becomes, ‘Oh, maybe I’m doing this now’, or ‘this is how I make a living’, or ‘this is how people are paying attention’.

For now, his career seems to be achieving perfect harmonies – that is, unless you ask him to sing the Springsteen classic Born in the USA. He laughs: “Doing the Bruce movie wasn’t easy, but I’ll remember recording Born in the USA for the rest of my life. I lost my voice entirely. I needed a nap and I saw Bruce shortly after that recording.

“I just stopped speaking for a couple of days and then my voice started to come back, and I loved the sound of it. I had this real rasp and I was like, ‘Oh, man, how can I capture this or recapture this?’

“I was waking up in the morning and I was screaming into a pillow to try and recapture like a little bit of that rasp, but I think my neighbours were getting nervous and I knew that I couldn’t go on that way.”

With about a week left before shooting on the biopic began, Springsteen had a documentary, Road Diary, coming out on Hulu and was at an event nearby.

White recalls: “I saw Bruce after that. I didn’t have any voice and he said,’What’d you do today?’ I said, ‘I recorded Born in the USA.’ And he said, ‘yeah, that sounds about right!’”

Liam Payne death update as police ‘still scouring through CCTV footage and evidence’

Liam Payne died almost a year ago, and police are still going through hundreds of hours’ worth of CCTV footage, as well as his personal laptop, to piece things together

Liam Payne’s death is still being investigated – almost a year later. The former One Direction singer-songwriter tragically died aged just 31 on October 16, 2024. The musician fell from the third floor of his hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and sustained injuries incompatible with life.

But still, almost a year on, police are attempting to piece together Liam’s final hours in Latin America, where he was alone after his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, headed home, having explained she didn’t like to be in the same place for a long period of time.

Since Liam’s death, two suspects have been charged with supplying drugs, and both deny the allegations. However, no trial date has been set yet. It’s reported that local police are going through over 800 hours of CCTV footage, as well as trawling through Liam’s personal laptop and the mobile phones of those connected to his death.

“It’s very frustrating as the likelihood of a trial still seems a long way off, and there is a sense that the police investigation is too slow,” a source said.

Currently, waiter Braian Nahuel Paiz, 25, and Ezequl David Pereya, 22, a former hotel worker, face up to 15 years in prison if they are convicted of drug offences. Both have been in jail since January. A source told The Sun: “The current evidence has been looked at by four judges and sent back for more work and examination.

“The last prosecuting official looked at the case in September and it’s now gone back to the original judge who is re-examining the evidence. Clearly more needs to be combed through such as the 800 hours of CCTV, the mobile phones and Liam’s laptop.”

While Paiz and Pereya are awaiting to find out their fate, three others linked to Liam’s death, including his pal Roger Nores, had their charges of criminal negligence dropped. In Argentina, the prosecutor’s office gathers evidence and later presents it to a judge, who decides whether to go ahead with a trial.

Paiz admits to taking drugs with Liam but vehemently denies supplying them. Court documents show that he is charged with selling cocaine to Payne, two days before the star tragically died. Paiz says that as the first anniversary approaches, he has started to revisit the memories.

“I wish he hadn’t died and things were different. I used to feel regret about what happened, but actually I don’t regret meeting him as he was my idol and I was a big fan,” he told the outlet. He states he didn’t sell drugs to Liam as he didn’t take any money from him.

Liam’s death was caused by “multiple trauma” and “internal and external bleeding”. At the time of his death, according to the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14, Liam was three times the US legal drink driving limit. His blood showed traces of alcohol, cocaine and prescription anti-depressants, which would have left him severely impaired.

Diane Keaton’s eyewatering $100million fortune as Hollywood icon dies

The Hollywood actress died in California on Saturday, October 11, following health complications. Diane Keaton is known for starring in films such as The Godfather and Annie Hall

Hollywood icon Diane Keaton has died at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable performances and an estimated $100million fortune.

A family spokesperson confirmed the heartbreaking news that the Oscar-winning actress died in California to People on Saturday. Her health is said to have taken a sudden decline in recent months, and even close friends were reportedly unaware of how ill she had become.

Diane’s remarkable career as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars spanned over five decades. She became a household name in the 1970s after her breakout role as Kay Adams in The Godfather trilogy, and later earned an Academy Award for her performance in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall.

She went on to star in a string of acclaimed films, including Reds, Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, and Something’s Gotta Give. Her achievements earned her an Oscar, a BAFTA, two Golden Globes, and multiple nominations for Emmy and Tony Awards.

Diane also collaborated frequently with filmmaker Nancy Meyers, starring in Baby Boom, Father of the Bride and Something’s Gotta Give.

While her acting career was the foundation of her immense wealth, Diane also became a savvy real estate investor with a passion for interior design and house flipping. In 2004, she bought a property in Laguna Beach for $7.5 million and sold it just two years later for $12.75 million.

She continued this streak in 2012 by purchasing a home in Pacific Palisades for $5.6 million and later selling it for $6.9 million. In 2018, she flipped a Tucson home for $2.6 million after buying it for $1.5 million.

Her most personal project was her own “dream home” in Los Angeles. The actress spent nearly a decade designing and renovating the five-bedroom mansion, and chronicled her process in a book she called The House That Pinterest Built.

Bizarrely enough, she said the inspiration for the property came from the children’s story Three Little Pigs. Diane previously shared: “I knew I was going to live in a brick house when I grew up.”

Sadly, as her health declined earlier this year, she quietly listed the $29 million property for sale. A friend told People: “She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”

Although she never got married, Diane adopted two children in her 50s. She has described raising her daughter, Dexter, and her son, Duke, as “the most completely humbling experience” of her life.

Details of her will have not yet been released, so it is yet to be determined who will inherit the fortune she saved up during her lifetime.

Tributes for the actress have poured in from Hollywood and beyond. Bette Midler, who starred alongside her in The First Wives Club, shared a heartfelt post on Instagram, writing: “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died.

“I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was… oh, la, lala!”

Love Island’s Tom Walker reveals wife is pregnant with first child

The reality star, who shot to fame on the fifth series of Love Island back in 2019, revealed on Instagram that his wife Chloe is pregnant with their first child.

Love Island star Tom Walker has revealed he’s all set to become a dad for the first time as his wife Chloe is pregnant with their first child. The reality star shot to fame on the fifth series of the ITV2 show back in 2019 and is now swapping the villa for diapers.

The couple took to Instagram to share the happy news with a series of adorable snaps. In the first one, a shadow of Chloe with her blossoming baby bump can be seen, with a stunning backdrop of a sunset.

In another picture, the happy couple beam from ear to ear as they pose for a selfie on a beach. They captioned the post: “Baby walker loading.”

Fans of the pair flocked to the comments section to share their well-wishes as one social media user penned: “So so happy!! You two are going to be the best parents.”

Another person commented: “Yay congratulations!! And what a stunning shot,” while a third gushed: “Amazing news. Hope you’re feeling well so far. Enjoy the journey!”

The couple tied the knot back in January 2021 after seeing one another on and off for a decade and he took to Instagram to share pictures of the special day.

Writing on Instagram, the model said: “So… We got married. After a couple of crazy years we decided to start the year off with a bit of positivity.

“Last weekend, 2.1.21 we tied the knot COVID style. We’ve been a long distance couple, on and off for almost 10 years now! Life experiences, all the challenges of the past few years and then plenty of thinking time, has made me realise that there is only one person I’d like to spend the rest of my life with.”

Tom continued: “So we made the decision not to waste anymore time and commit to spending rest of our lives together. Thanks Little One for saying yes and becoming my Wife, I can’t believe how lucky I am to have found you! When you know, you know and I know.”

Former Love Islander Amy Hart, who was on the same series as Tom, was among the celebrities to send them congratulations.

Love Island fans will remember Tom’s stay in the villa being iconic after he clashed with Maura Higgins after she caught him talking about her to the rest of the boys.

The pair were chosen to spend a night together in the hideaway, but his crude comments to the boys left Maura in disbelief as she questioned him on what she had heard him say.

He followed her to the girl’s make-up room but Maura wasn’t having any of it and she shut him down. She hit the roof and accused Tom of “treating her like garbage” and having no respect for her. However, the boys leapt to his defense which made her soften towards him as she gave him a list of demands in order to make it up to her.

The pair didn’t end up sleeping in the hideaway together but they did appear to put things behind them as they officially coupled up at the next re-coupling ceremony.

Tom was dumped on day 25 in the villa along with Arabella Chi, with Maura continuing her journey in the villa and exploring her later connection with Curtis Pritchard.

The two made it all the way to the final and came in fourth place, leading to a relationship on the outside. But Maura and Curtis weren’t meant to be as they only lasted eight months together before calling it quits.

Lauryn Goodman’s ‘messages’ to Jack Draper gave tennis star ‘a wake up call’

Tennis ace Jack Draper and reality star Lauryn Goodman started dating after meeting on celebrity dating app Raya and were spotted on a coffee shop date but their romance was reportedly short-lived.

Jack Draper has reportedly been given “a wake-up call” after alleged racy messages between him and Lauryn Goodman were leaked. The pair first matched on celebrity dating app Raya back in April and were reportedly seen on a coffee date in South London, but the romance was short-lived.

The pair are believed to have exchanged flirt messages on the dating app, as well as Jack asking to meet up with the Celebs Go Dating star. However, the sports star is said to be unimpressed by the private messages being leaked. It’s claimed that the pair had spoken to one another on the exclusive dating app earlier this year and felt there may have been a spark.

But those reportedly close to Jack have now hit out, claiming that the leaked messages have given the tennis player a “wake-up call”. Jack and Lauren both decided that there was no spark between them after their first meeting and decided not to meet up for a second time.

A source close to the tennis player told Daily Mail: “Raya is a private app for industry people to meet others, but seeing an unremarkable coffee date and a handful of insignificant messages leaked will have given him a real wake-up call.”

However, a separate source revealed to The Sun yesterday: “Jack was sending her sexy messages — trying to find out what she is into. Lauryn’s a dark horse and wasn’t giving a lot away, so he tried luring her in with pictures of himself topless. Jack also mentioned going to Lauryn’s to get in the hot tub with her, but she quickly shut him down.”

Speaking to the Mirror, a source close to Lauryn said: “Lauryn has had trust issues within her close circle and she is upset to see she still has this.” The 34-year-old mum-of-two enjoyed a coffee shop date in Wandsworth with Jack, who is 11 years younger than her, but the romance was over before it even began.

An insider told The Sun on Sunday: “Jack’s a regular, so I see him often. He towered above her, but they were flirting as he bought her a coffee. I saw them leave together.”

The source added that Jack was attempting to stop Lauryn getting wet as it was raining, with the pair looking relaxed with one another as he wrapped his arm around her. Friends of Lauryn are said to have told her she would have been “crazy” to turn Jack down.

A source said: “She decided to finally meet up with him because she’s been through the mill, but there’s no plans to see each other again. Lauryn’s life is centred around her children, but now they’re getting a bit older, friends think she needs to start enjoying herself again.”

Lauryn became a major talking point last year after it emerged that she had welcomed another child with Kyle, who was married to Annie Kilner at the time she fell pregnant.

And at that time, Annie was determined to pursue a divorce. But it looks as though the former Manchester City player, who now plays for Burnley, has managed to patch things up with the mum of four.

Back in January last year, Kyle issued a public apology to his devastated wife. He said: “What I’ve done is horrible and I take full responsibility. I made idiot choices and idiot decisions. I can’t begin to think or imagine what Annie is going through. I’ve tried to ask her but there’s pain and hurt.”

He continued: “My actions have caused a lot of pain to a lot of people. I’m sorry because, as a family, this isn’t meant to happen.” While those close to Kyle told us there was no relationship between him and Lauryn, a source close to the reality star told us that Walker was “very much a willing, enthusiastic participant.”
