The fires that have devastated Los Angeles bode badly for foreign entries in this year’s Oscars, the French director of the acclaimed Spanish-language musical “Emilia Perez” told AFP on the eve of the nominations.

Jacques Audiard’s surreal Spanish-language musical drama about a transgender Mexican drug baron, who tries to make amends for her violent past by helping trace people disappeared by cartels, is one of the favorites for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards.

Starring singer-actress Selena Gomez, “Avatar” star Zoe Saldana and Spanish transgender actress Karla Sofia Gascon, the film, which won four Golden Globes and the runner-up prize in Cannes, is also tipped to garner acting and directing nods.

But in an interview with AFP in Bogota, Audiard said he expected Hollywood to “play it local” in the wake of the blazes which have killed at least 27 people and razed entire neighborhoods in America’s entertainment capital.

Film and TV stars have been among those who lost their homes, including Anthony Hopkins, Billy Crystal, Jeff Bridges and Jamie Lee Curtis.

“I was thinking about that day the other day,” Audiard, dubbed the Scorsese of French cinema for his gritty films about low-lifers and outsiders, said when asked about his prospects for taking home a statuette.

“I said to myself that given what happened in Los Angeles, with all the problems they must be having at the moment, they will have to, in my opinion, play it local. ”

He has a history of making films in languages other than French, from “Dheepan,” about three Sri Lankan refugees struggling to start over in a tough Parisian housing estate  told mostly in Tamil, to his philosophical English-language Western “The Sisters Brothers” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Jake Gyllenhaal.

– A ‘mongrel’ film –

“Emilia Perez,” the latest offering in his genre-hopping career, had been tipped for success but the last leg of its Oscars odyssey has been marred by the critical roasting it received in Mexico where it is due to open in theatres on Thursday.

The criticism revolves around the fact that the film features only one main Mexican actor (Adriana Paz), was mostly shot in French studios, and, above all, what some Mexicans see as its frivolous treatment of violence in a country where more than 450,000 people have been murdered in the past two decades and 100,000 others are missing.

Audiard, who was particularly moved by the story of 43 students missing, and believed massacred, in southern Mexico since 2014, said he spent more than four years doing research for “Emilia Perez. ”

But “at some point you have to stop doing research because…otherwise you end up doing a documentary. ”

He rejected criticism that the film misrepresented Mexico, saying some scenes in the film deliberately sought to “defy credulity” and that his goal was to tell stories that are “both local and universal. ”

“It’s a Spanish-language film that was shot in Paris. It’s a mongrel film,” he defended.

“Emilia Perez” sees him again delve into the interior lives of drug traffickers, the subject of “A Prophet,” but he denied being fascinated by the criminal underworld.

“I hate them,” he said of traffickers, calling them “fascists” who undermined democracy.

His gruelling promotional campaign for “Emilia Perez” has repeatedly taken him back and forth across the Atlantic in recent months.

Last week, he attended the film’s Mexican premiere before travelling to Colombia for the Bogota screening.

Ricky Gervais has revealed the sad news that a star of AfterLife has died aged 13.

The comedian-turned-actor took to social media to announce the death of Anti, who played Brandy the dog in the hit Netflix series. Taking to Twitter/X the star shared an image of himself and the German Shepherd pooch on a park bench.

He wrote: “Sad News. ‘Anti’, who played ‘Brandy’ in AfterLife, has died. She was 13 and a very good girl. ” He added a crying face emoji to his post as fans quickly paid their respects to the canine and shared their thoughts on the series.

One user penned: “It was the most simple yet profound series I’ve ever watched. Watching you in this role, I constantly saw myself. It was a series where I confronted myself and life. You and Brandy were amazing. ” Another wrote: “I’m so sorry to hear that. She brought so much joy and love to the show. “

Antilly was often typecast as a police dog or guard dog on her time in front of the camera. She also featured in Midsomer Murders, Doc Martin and 2016 film Denial. She also appeared in Trespass Against Us, The Midnight Sky, and The Boys in the Boat.

Ricky has often spoke out on animal rights and previously said he relates to all owners by doing ‘anything’ for dogs. He previously opened up on what dogs mean to him by saying: “You know me. I’ll do anything for dogs.

Love Island’s Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, has been causing a stir amongst fans during her time in the All Stars villa.

Bound to get viewers talking even more, tonight’s episode sees her and Curtis Pritchard, whom she’s currently in a couple with, are about to make things ‘official’.

Airing later on this evening, Ekin-Su and Curtis are seen catching up by the pool and in the evening Ekin-Su asks Curtis: “I just want to know if you thought it’s going too slow or fast…” Curtis replies: “I don’t think we’re going too fast or too slow, I’m a one woman man and I wanna throw myself into this with no barriers…”

Ekin then adds: “I’m invested in basically you, I’m being vulnerable with you, I can’t give that to another man, maybe I am closed off…that’s how I feel,” to which Curtis agrees: “Yeah, I’d say I’m closed off, it’s nice! ” Ekin-Su laughs and says: “Shut up and kiss me! ”

This comes after recently dumped Love Island contestant India Reynolds shared her thoughts on fellow Islander Ekin-Su hinting she could be there for something other than love.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, the 34 year old dumped star discussed Ekin-Su’s decision to join the show – months after refusing to talk about Love Island while on Big Brother. India suggested that Ekin-Su might be “enjoying” the attention and involvement in various situations, though she stopped short of labelling her as overtly playing up to the cameras.

When asked if any contestants were putting on a show, India remarked, “I think Ekin’s probably enjoying being in there and having a bit of fun with it, I don’t know. ” She further elaborated on Ekin-Su’s awareness of the cameras, stating, “Not hyper aware of the cameras, I don’t think it was a play up to the cameras but watching it back, she seems to be in a lot of conversations. “

Pete Doherty is gearing up to release a new solo album called Felt Better Alive before after heading on an intimate UK tour.

The Libertines star’s album is coming out in May via his own label, but in March through May, he will be performing intimate gigs in Newport, Newcastle, Deptford, Bristol, Watford, Catford, Oldham, Geneva, Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne, Berlin, Leipzig, Munich and Bruges.

In a recent interview, the singer opened up about his ‘ultimate fantasy moment’, which included fantasising about writing hit songs for Oasis, Blur and Pulp. He said: “My ultimate fantasy moment is like in that film Yesterday where he’s the only person to know The Beatles songs.

“Before that film was written and made, I used to have that fantasy when I was a kid. I’d be watching Top Of The Pops with Oasis, Blur and Pulp and would pretend I’d written the songs. That’s the whole thing about singing in front of the mirror with a hair brush, isn’t it? “
