Danny Dyer shares his guilt after death of mentor Harold Pinter sent him into ‘spiral of madness’

The former EastEnders actor said he was ‘lost’ and ‘angry at the world’ after the Nobel Prize-winning playwright died in 2008. He expressed his guilt and how he was a ‘bit of a lost soul’ and ‘angry at the world’

Dyer said he would stay at the playwright’s house and learn about famous writers and poets like WH Auden and CS Lewis

Actor Danny Dyer has opened up about the profound impact the death of his mentor, acclaimed playwright Harold Pinter, had on him, describing it as a “spiral of madness”.

The Nobel Prize-winner cast the ex-EastEnders star, 47, in his production of ‘Celebration’ at the Almeida Theatre in London back in 2000. Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, Dyer reminisced about staying over at Pinter’s home and absorbing literature from notable scribes like WH Auden and CS Lewis.

In 2001, ‘Celebration’ made its way to New York’s Lincoln Centre, but Dyer faced an onstage debacle when he blanked on his lines and succumbed to an “anxiety attack” following a night of drugs and revelry. Dyer expressed remorse for disappointing Pinter but shared how the playwright offered comfort, wrapping his arm around him to ease his distress.

Looking back on losing touch with Pinter and learning of his passing in 2008, Dyer recounted his reaction, saying: “I hadn’t spoke to him in a while. I did go off the rails for many years, and I found out by looking on the front of a newspaper. Again, I’d been on a bender and I was coming home and I was going, I think I was going to buy cigarettes at the petrol garage, and I see it in the paper. ‘Pinter dead’. This really sent me on a spiral of madness, really.”

He spoke of his guilt, saying: “The guilt of not being around him anymore and just being lost, I was a bit of a lost soul, and again, angry at the world.”

In April, US publication Deadline reported that Dyer was developing an idea for a play about his relationship with Pinter, whom he referred to as his “mentor”. Dyer, who had his breakthrough in the 1999 film Human Traffic, also reflected on some of the documentaries he had made earlier in his career.

In the noughties the actor presented TV series Danny Dyer’s Real Football Factories and Danny Dyer’s Deadliest Men, the latter of which saw him interview gangsters and former terrorists

He said: “I’d made a few films and I just wasn’t getting paid any money, and I was desperate to get onto the property ladder. I was still living in a council estate at Custom House, living with my daughter (Dani) and (wife) Jo, and it’s like, well, I’m famous, but I’m still living on a council estate. And so then my house became a bit like Stonehenge, my little flat, and people would just stand outside waiting for me.”

He revealed there was a tipping point when an attempted burglary forced a move: “There was a moment where someone tried to burgle our house and I was like ‘we can’t live here no more’.”

The opportunity to do a documentary with a veteran footballer came as a financial windfall, as Dyer recalled, “So I got offered to do a documentary with a real football veteran and I couldn’t believe the money they was offering me, I thought, ‘Oh, wow'”.

Yet, despite the payday, he shared that the experience left much to be desired, saying, “Now I hated it, because I didn’t have a script, it was me on my own interviewing people, and interviewing dangerous people, by the way, but it got me on the property ladder.”

When quizzed on potential typecasting fears, he admitted he had no such luxury to worry: “I didn’t have the luxury. You know, it’s a bit uncouth, I can’t watch them back now, I cringe at them.”

Dyer concluded with pragmatic frankness, acknowledging the financial necessity behind his choices: “But, you know, I needed to earn money, and I needed to get a house, and I needed to do the right thing.”

Danny Dyer’s instalment of Desert Island Discs is set to broadcast at 10am on BBC Radio 4 and will also be accessible on BBC Sounds.

Blake Lively responds to Taylor Swift subpoena and slams Justin Baldoni ‘circus’

It Ends With Us star Blake Lively has issued a statement through her representatives as she accused her co-star Justin Baldoni of creating a ‘circus’ around their legal drama

Blake Lively has slammed Justin Baldoni as she accused him of turning their legal drama into “entertainment for the tabloids”. It comes after the actress’ pal Taylor Swift was dragged into the scandal when she was officially subpoenaed to appear as a witness.

The legal debate kicked off following Blake and Justin’s time working together on film It Ends With Us. She initially launched a sexual harassment lawsuit against Justin – who has strongly refuted the claims.

However, he hit back with a $400 million defamation claim against her, her publicist, and husband Ryan Reynolds, all of whom have dismissed the accusations. Additionally, Justin has launched a $250 million libel case against the New York Times over their coverage of Blake’s allegations.

Now, pop star Taylor has been dragged in as Justin’s legal team subpoenaed her. Taylor was delivered a legal notice on Friday by Justin’s lawyer Bryan Freedman – a move which has been slammed by her team as a tactic to create clickbait.

In response, Blake’s representative issued a statement directed at Justin and his Wayfarer Studios partner Steve Sarowitz. She claimed their team continues “to turn a case of sexual harassment and retaliation into entertainment for the tabloids,” according to People.

The statement added: “Going as far as suggesting that they sell tickets to a concert venue – Madison Square Garden – to witness Ms. Lively’s deposition, to subpoenaing Taylor Swift, a woman who has given a voice to millions all over the world.”

They added: “This is a very serious legal matter, not Barnum & Bailey’s Circus.”

Taylor, who is close friends with Blake, licensed her hit song My Tears Ricochet to be used in the film but was not involved in the making of It Ends With Us, say her reps.

A representative for the superstar said: ” Taylor Swift never set foot on the set of this movie, she was not involved in any casting or creative decisions, she did not score the film, she never saw an edit or made any notes on the film, she did not even see It Ends With Us until weeks after its public release, and was traveling around the globe during 2023 and 2024 headlining the biggest tour in history.”

They then gave a damning verdict on why they believed Justin’s team had really subpoenaed Taylor dragging her into the legal row.

Her rep continued to DailyMail.com : “Given that her involvement was licensing a song for the film, which 19 other artists also did, this document subpoena is designed to use Taylor Swift’s name to draw public interest by creating tabloid clickbait instead of focusing on the facts of the case.”

The development comes after Blake’s attorney Mike Gottlieb confirmed that she is expected to “be a witness at her trial.” He told People: “The ultimate moment for a plaintiff’s story to be told is at trial. We expect that to be the case here. Of course she’s going to testify.”

Gottlieb also addressed rumours that stars such as Hugh Jackman may also be subpoenaed in the case. He said: “It’s completely unclear what claims or defences in the case any of these celebrities… have any relevance to at all.

“This is a case about what happened to Blake Lively when she raised claims of sexual harassment on the set. It’s not a case about how songs were chosen for the movie. It’s not a case about fictional Marvel characters in Deadpool movies.”

The Mirror has contacted Justin’s representative for comment.

Jack Fincham shares secret bulimia battle as he fears lasting health problem

Love Island star Jack Fincham has revealed that he has battled the eating disorder bulimia for almost 20 years – and his health may have been damaged for good as a result

Jack Fincham has revealed he has secretly battled bulimia for the past twenty years and has been left requiring medication to combat damage done to his body. The 34-year-old reality star shot to fame on Love Island in 2018 as a contestant during the fourth season of the long-running dating show.

While Jack appeared confident on the show – and ultimately won alongside then-girlfriend Dani Dyer – he was still battling the eating disorder. Since his Love Island days, Jack has become better known for his sporting career as aa professional boxer.

However, he has acknowledged that the sport is part of the reason he became obsessed with food and keeping himself in shape. In a new interview, the TV star has explained that he was just 14 when his relationship with food took a dangerous turn.

He explained that the eating disorder took hold when he first started out as a boxer as he needed to reach a specific fighting weight. The star has struggled to break free from the condition in the years since.

Opening up to The Sun on Sunday, the reality star revealed: “I have been a bulimic for 19 years, bingeing on food and then being sick.” He then went on to explain there have been times where he binged on McDonald’s, salt- and-vinegar crisps, sweets, pizzas, pastys, sausage rolls, steak slices and more.

Saying he was left feeling “ashamed” every time he would binge, he also made himself sick. He said: “I’d eat it all, then go to the downstairs toilet at my mum’s — because nobody could hear me, as it was in the hall, next to the front door. I know it’s gross, but for years I didn’t actually think I had a problem.”

It wasn’t just food that he would focus on in his attempts to be a certain weight in time for boxing matches, he would also take hot baths and sit in saunas to reduce his weight. He explained there would be times he would go for as many as five days a week without eating – and on other times he would chew food to gain the taste, but spit out the food without swallowing.

Recounting getting down to just 52kg (114lbs, or 8.1st), he said: “It was a tough time for me. I’d just discovered my dad wasn’t in fact my biological father, and I think that screwed with my head. And I wanted to be good at boxing. Before an evening match I’d go to school and not eat or drink a thing so that I’d be ready for the weigh-in. I could lose 1.5kg in a day doing that. I was just a kid.”

He went on to explain he would also use food to “punish” himself, bingeing and making himself sick on days he lost matches. The experience has left him with a health condition he fears could be with him for life.

Jack revealed: “Eventually it caught up with me because I started to get really bad reflux. I was in agony. I went to the doctor and told him everything. I am now taking tablets to deal with the acid in my throat. I’m in agony without daily medication. I could be on them for ever, I don’t know.”

In the extensive interview, Jack reflected on other recent issues – which have included drugs battles and was in court due to being the owner of a dangerous dog. He also opened up about the collapse of his relationship with Towie’s Chloe Brockett.

The pair have been together on and off for five years, and he is unsure if their current split will be permanent – admitting he is still in love with her.

Miley Cyrus breaks silence on family feud rumours with emotional statement

Miley Cyrus has broken her silence on rumours of a family feud with dad Billy Ray Cyrus and mum Tish Cyrus after her mother unfollowed the actress and singer on social media

Miley Cyrus has quashed rumours of a falling out with her parents, insisting that she and her mum Tish are tighter than ever. The pop sensation took to her Instagram Story to clear the air after it was noticed that mum Tish seemingly unfollowed her on social media—an incident Miley chalks up to a tech mishap.

She shared: “I rarely comment on rumours, but my mama and I are too tight for anything to ever come between us.”

In her flying-the-flag-for-mum moment, Miley made sure everyone knew they were still chummy as can be: “She’s my best friend. Like a lot of moms, she doesn’t know how to work her phone and somehow unfollowed me – simple, coincidental and uninteresting.”

For her part, Tish echoed this sentiment, explaining the social media snafu once it was pointed out by an eagle-eyed fan.

Laughing it off, she clarified: “I didn’t. Idk what happened lol. I have no idea how that happened but it’s fixed now [pink heart emoji].”

Tish further emphasised the solidity of their bond on the platform with an emphatic statement: “I would never unfollow Miley, her and I are as close as we’ve ever been. Period. Little [heart] emoji @mileycyrus.”

Likewise, Miley underlined her enduring connection with dad Billy Ray in light of past difficulties. The ‘Wrecking Ball’ songstress admitted: “My dad and I have had our challenges over the years.”

Miley went on: “Now, in my 30s, family is my priority above all else. I’m at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing.”

She continued: “Grateful for the good health and love that flows through my family.”

However, in a previous conversation with chat show host David Letterman on ‘My Next Guess Needs No Introduction’ last year, Miley credited her mum with her upbringing but acknowledged the significant impact her dad had on her music career.

She said: “Without my dad, I know – I mean, not just literally I wouldn’t be sitting in this chair, I wouldn’t exist – but I would not, who I am as a person, it wouldn’t exist.

“Because my dad, as a creative and as an artist in the way that his brain works, has always made me feel safer in my own mind because we’re very similar in our ideas.”

Miley added: “So I think a lot of his perspective on reality and on life, I’ve inherited from him, more so than the way that I was raised – which really, my mom raised me.”
