Robert Redford confessed he was paid ‘practically nothing’ for legendary movie role

Hollywood legend Robert Redford, who died at the 89, says he was paid “practically nothing” for one of the most iconic roles of his long career.

Redford, who appeared in films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, and All the President’s Men, passed away today (Tuesday, September 16). The actor, director, and activist, who also founded the Sundance Film Festival, died at his home in Sundance, Utah, surrounded by loved ones, according to his publicist.

Redford, an environmental advocate and champion of Native American rights, was once described as “a chunk of Mount Rushmore levered into stonewashed denims”. Over his illustrious career, he starred in over 50 films and won an Oscar for Best Director for his 1980 film Ordinary People.

Despite his many achievements, Redford is perhaps best remembered for his role in the 1969 classic, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, where he starred alongside Paul Newman.

However, in a revealing interview on BBC’s Talking Pictures with Michael Parkinson, Redford admitted that he was paid “practically nothing” for this iconic role due to his relative obscurity at the time.

BBC’s Talking Pictures aired a special episode examining legendary collaborations between cinema’s biggest names, featuring the enduring friendship between Redford and Newman, which extended far beyond their celebrated on-screen partnership.

During his 1980 chat with Michael Parkinson, Robert reflected on his character and how the chance came about.

He said: “That was the film that went out of whack. I had made films before – there was one film that was successful before that, in America anyway.

“But nothing to that degree where it got outsized.”

The actor made the shocking revelation that film bosses “didn’t want” him at the time.

“That film was a film that, for me, was very comfortable,” he stated. “The studio didn’t want me in that film because I was not known.

“They were trying to have a star comparable with Paul (Newman) to be with.

“And I practically did it for nothing, that film, because I just felt comfortable playing that role.”

He added: “So it was enjoyable… I probably had more fun making that film than any film that I did.”

Robert has received countless accolades for his acting work across several decades.

His role in The Voice of Charlie Point landed him an Emmy nod for Best Supporting Actor, and whilst he’s taken on various other parts, it was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid that launched his career into the stratosphere.

The friendship between Paul and Robert was just as strong away from the cameras as it appeared on screen.

Paul died in 2008 aged 83 following a lung cancer diagnosis.

Years afterwards, Robert looked back on his mate’s personality, sharing that Paul was a “nervous” person. “He was a chatty, nervous guy who was always biting his fingernails,” he revealed to The Toronto Sun.

Paul Mescal reveals family plans with Gracie Abrams in rare relationship admission

He’s one of film’s biggest heartthrobs, but all Paul Mescal really wants is to be a family man, he says. “I would love to have a family. I’m not like, “I want them tomorrow,” but I would love to have kids,” admitted the 29-year-old Gladiator actor, who usually remains coy about his personal life.

The Irish star, who was born and bred in Maynooth, has been dating Gracie Abrams for over a year, but rarely talks publicly about the singer, 26. And while he’s happy to share his plans of becoming a father one day, Paul isn’t quite ready to give an insight into their relationship just yet.

“I don’t know how to answer that,” he admitted when asked whether there was a specific moment when he and Gracie decided to take their relationship public.

He went on to clarify to Rolling Stone: “I actually do have an answer, but everything to do with that is deeply precious to me and I don’t want to.… This isn’t … I don’t really … umm … I want to protect those things fundamentally.”

While Paul may not be one to shout about his romantic escapades, it hasn’t stopped the speculation on what they entail. He was first linked to Gracie – daughter of Star Wars director JJ Abrams – in June 2024, when they were spotted enjoying a date together.

Their first big appearance together was five months later at the Gladiator II premiere after-party, and since then, the couple have made several public appearances – including at this year’s Glastonbury.

The couple sparked engagement rumours earlier this year when Gracie had been spotted wearing a diamond ring that quickly sparked intense speculation that the duo were set to take their relationship to the next level.

Celebrity gossip page Deux Moi also questioned if the big jewel was an engagement ring, sharing a snap of Gracie in Melbourne performing on stage while wearing the big bit of bling on her engagement finger.

However, the pair haven’t confirmed whether a wedding is in the works or not, and Gracie appears to have since ditched the ring.

The engagement rumours came shortly after many worried they had split, after they were spotted embroiled in what was reportedly an emotional conversation.

Gracie and Paul reportedly dining in a London restaurant when onlookers spotted what they thought was a break-up – with Gracie said to have burst into floods of tears before storming out of the eatery.

They were apparently enjoying a spot to eat at North London bakery-come-restaurant, Jolene, in Newington Green before things took a dramatic turn, with fellow diners claiming Paul had his “head in his hands as Gracie just sat there crying” at one point.

“She was crying so much that he then started to cry too,” one onlooker claimed. “She eventually got up and walked out of the restaurant while they were halfway through their meal, and he was left to pay the bill before leaving shortly afterwards.”

They go on to tell the MailOnline how other people in the restaurant were shocked at how public the exchange between Paul and Gracie was and how “it looked like a break-up”.

Katie Price branded ‘unprofessional’ as fans demand refunds on tour tickets

Katie Price’s fans have been left fuming and branded the former model ‘unprofessional’ as they demanded a refund, having purchased tickets for her current UK tour

Fans at Katie Price’s most recent tour date are said to be “furious” and demanding their money back after the star missed a huge chunk of her own show.

Katie and her close friend Kerry Katona have embarked on a 33-date tell-all tour called An Evening with Katie Price and Kerry Katona. The tour has taken the pair to venues all around the country, including The Playhouse in Whitley Bay. But, in a since-deleted Instagram post, the venue informed fans that the show would be starting 30 minutes late due to technical difficulties.

When the show did start, only Kerry was present for the first half. Katie was reportedly supposed to join by video call, but that was a “disaster,” according to a source.

The source explained: “Kerry went on solo for the first half and Katie tried to join by video but it was a disaster. They had a longer interval and Katie finally got there at 9:30. She said it was the traffic and had taken her over nine hours to get there, but fans are furious.”

Fans are reported to have demanded their money back. Speaking to The Sun, one disgruntled fan said: “We want half our money back because it was only half a show – it’s so unprofessional.”

Another called the fact that Katie was only on stage for roughly half an hour a “joke” and that the audience still hadn’t had a proper apology.

“People don’t want to be hanging around on a Monday night just for that. They didn’t even say sorry properly.” Recently, Katie found herself in hot water with fans after she cancelled a charity gig to attend Chloe Ferry’s 30th birthday party.

She was booked to appear at Milton Keynes Pride but pulled out at the last minute. The organisers slammed her “professionalism”, especially when the excuse she gave – that she was too busy filming and recording a new song in a studio – turned out not to be the complete truth.

“I was disappointed when she cancelled, but when it turned out to be Chloe Ferry’s birthday, I was infuriated. It’s not right,” said a former fan. “When she said she couldn’t do a charity gig because of filming, that was a load of b*****ks.”

Katie had told fans that she was “sorry” to cancel her performance as other commitments meant she was unable to attend. She told fans that she was “filming” and “recording” her latest single, following her success with I Got U. “I hope you have a fantastic time and I’m so sorry. It’s just my filming schedule at the moment,” she said.

Prior to this, Katie was due to headline Barnsley Pride in July, but again, she cancelled her performance just hours before she was due to attend. In the same month, she also cancelled a performance at Glasgow Pride due to “another urgent obligation.”

Jack Grealish joined by girlfriend and daughter at festival themed party for his 30th

Footballer Jack Grealish was joined by family and friends, including his partner Sasha Attwood, at a festival-themed party for his 30th birthday earlier this month

Family and friends celebrated Jack Grealish’s 30th birthday earlier this month at a festival-themed party. The professional footballer was joined by loved ones including his partner Sasha Attwood for the occasion.

The party for the Everton player, which took place just days before his birthday on September 10, was held in an expansive tepee in an outdoor area two weeks ago. Jack has since said that the gathering was “one of remember”.

‘Grealfields’ included a DJ in a booth inside the tent, which was also home to a bar. One photo shared on social media gave a glimpse at a speciality drinks menu, which appeared to include a shot named after Jack.

Decorations included disco balls hanging from the roof and a silver mannequin. Whilst a large sign outside the tent is thought to have spelt out ‘Grealfields’. Guests in attendance were given ‘VIP’ lanyards for the event.

Jack, who opted for a denim outfit, was presented with a white cake at one point. He also took the opportunity to pose for a photo with Sasha and their daughter Mila, who is celebrating her first birthday next week.

Sasha posted about the party on Instagram yesterday, writing alongside a series of photos: “Oh what a night.” Jack had already shared some photos himself last week whilst reflecting on the special occasion on his birthday.

The England wrote in his post: “30!! Jeeez this one feels old! but really am feeling the best I’ve felt in ages! Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes and a big thank you to all my incredible family & friends for making my 30th one to remember last week! Grealfields.”

Katie Price over two hours late to theatre show as Kerry Katona forced to go solo

Former glamour model Katie Price left her best mate Kerry Katona hanging as she was over two hours late to their theatre appearance, leaving the singer to head out solo

Katie Price left her best pal Kerry Katona in the lurch as she turned up more than two hours late to their theatre show. The pair have been travelling up and down the country as part of their chat show tour, An Evening with Katie Price & Kerry Katona.

They have promised fans across the nation to “tell-all” about their lives. However, there has been a few hiccups along the way with Katie getting “booted” out of a hotel and the former glamour model, 47, had to step in and apologise over rowdy fans in New Brighton.

On Monday night, things didn’t go as planned as the pair headed to Whitley Bay’s Playhouse. The start time was forced to be pushed back and with so much time passing by, Kerry decided to step on stage without Katie.

Shortly after the venue confirmed stage times for the show, a now-deleted post said it would start at 8 rather than 7.30pm. The post on Katie and Kerry’s tour page cited “technical difficulties”.

They explained the 30 minute delay would help “bring the best show possible,” yet as 8pm came, Katie was nowhere to be seen. Kerry headed on stage solo and managed to improvise with Katie appearing on a video call.

Katie was in a car on the way to the venue as she appeared on a big screen. The mum-of-five told the awaiting crowd they could expect her at 9:18pm that evening, but she ended up being 20 minutes later.

When she finally arrived, Katie belted out her own song, I Got U, and explained she was late due to needing to be at home for Harvey. An audience member told The Chronicle that the show suffered some technical difficulties, with the sound was “very quiet” and “unclear”.

The show wrapped up at around 10:20pm, before fans who bought Meet and Greet tickets got to meet Katie and Kerry. Just last week, Katie opened up about a run in at a hotel while on tour.

Taking to Snapchat, the former glamour model updated viewers on her morning and wrote: “Hotel booted us out”. In a video, she explained what happened in more detail. “Don’t you just hate it when people knock on the door of your hotel, ‘come on you’ve got to get out now’?” she asked.

“It really winds me up. I’m like, ‘yes if you want to come in you can see we are packing up,’. Anyway, we are at the theatre six hours early which is good do I’m going to find a Subway.

“I’m going to put the kittens in, settle them in, and then go get a Subway.” Katie has been travelling with her beloved kittens, who have had a tough start in life meaning she is now bottle feeding them.

Another mishap on the tour came when Katie had to apologise to fans from the stage after one show was disrupted by a group of drunken women.

The pair’s show in New Brighton descended into chaos after a group of drunken women were ordered to leave by security and police had to be called. Security staff were reported to be talking to a member of the audience during the show and this person and her group were then removed from the venue, to the sound of cheers from the rest of the crowd.

Katie apologised to the audience after watching all the drama on a TV backstage. She quipped: “Sorry about the drama. It had nothing to do with us.”
