Where is Coronation Street’s Norris Cole star now after heart attack and leaving soap

Coronation Street’s Norris Cole was played by Malcolm Hebden, who left the ITV soap over five years ago

Coronation Street’s Malcolm Hebden is a soap legend thanks to his role as Norris Cole – but what has the actor been up to since leaving the show?

The actor made his first appearance on the ITV soap playing Norris way back in 1994. Best known for being the street’s very own busybody, Norris appeared in more than 1,600 episodes.

However, after 27 years on the cobbles, Malcom announced he was retiring from acting in January 2021. He called it quits on acting after suffering a heart attack in 2017.

As viewers will remember, Norris was tragically killed off the soap after the character had been moved to a retirement home. But over five years since his last soap appearance, what has Norris actor Malcom been up to?

Malcom as Norris on Coronation Street

Malcolm Hebden is best known for his role as Norris Cole in Coronation Street. However, he previously played a character called Carlos, the Spanish boyfriend of Mavis Riley, played by Thelma Barlow. He starred in the show between 1974 and 1975.

However, nearly 20 years later, in 1994, he started portraying Norris. The actor, who won Funniest Character at the Inside Soap Awards in both 2001 and 2002, left the soap three years later, but he returned again in 1999.

Some of his biggest storylines involved his relationship with Mary Taylor (Patti Clare) and his feud with Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire) as well as his ongoing nosiness in Weatherfield.

Malcolm had a near-fatal heart attack in late 2017, which led him to step back from Coronation Street. In March 2019 he made a brief return to the soap but final appearance occurred in June 2020, with Norris dying from a stroke off-screen. His character’s death was announced the following year.

Malcom’s near-fatal heart attack

In 2017, Malcom suffered a near-fatal heart attack and later spoke about the ordeal to the Blackpool Gazette.

He told the paper that he visited his GP with a chest infection and after listening to his heart he was called later that same day to be told an emergency ambulance was on its way to collect him and take him to the Royal Blackburn Hospital, the nearest hospital to his home in the Ribble Valley.

Malcom shared: “I was informed by my doctor I had had at least one heart attack. I was sent to hospital, by emergency ambulance to Blackburn hospital and was there one night.”

“While there I collapsed and was brought here to Blackpool Victoria – where I was operated on, in a procedure which was described by my surgeon Mr Zacharias as ‘ground-breaking’. The heart attack tore a hole in my heart, they operated and took a chance.”

The actor’s heart was “wallpapered” to repair the damage done by the silent heart attack, using tissue from a cow in the procedure.

He was moved back to the Royal Blackburn Hospital still in a coma, and came round “some time in January,” before being discharged in late February, after almost three months in hospital.

Malcom’s return to cobbles

In January 2021, Malcom – who was 81 years old at the time – announced that he would be retiring from acting. He later told The Sun: “I absolutely adored playing Norris and I was pleased to be able to return briefly after my operation. It took a great deal of courage to make the decision to retire.”

Fast forward to October 2023, and he made an appearance the documentary special Barbara Knox at 90 which celebrated Barbara Knox’s 90th birthday.

And more recently, he Malcom headed back to the cobbles set to support his former co-star Sam Aston, who plays Chesney Brown, while he was competing on Dancing on Ice in 2025.

They reminisced about their early days working on the soap together, with both revealing that they “remember it well”. Sam recalled and told Malcom: “One thing I remember that you’d said was know your lines and don’t be late… And they’re two things that I’ve tried to carry on.”

Malcolm also affectionately referred to Sam as his surrogate grandson, as Sam shared that he has “wonderful memories” of growing up on the soap.

Charlotte Dawson sheds two stone as she reveals secrets to weight loss

Mum-of-three, Charlotte Dawson, has opened up about her recent weight loss following the birth of her daughter, Gigi, and says she’s determined to stay fit this year

Charlotte Dawson has revealed her incredible weight loss while setting herself a mammoth fitness goal for the new year.

The mum-of-three, 33, says she’s already lost two stone and is now determined to lose another in just six weeks. Charlotte said she was spurred on after putting on four pounds over the Christmas period. Despite her slight weight gain in December, Charlotte said she was “buzzing” it wasn’t more and is now focused on reaching her ideal weight.

Taking to Instagram, wearing a black sports vest and matching leggings – full of energy – she announced: “Happy Tuesday transformations! I am so proud of myself; I’m nearly at the two stone mark. Obviously, I put four pounds on over Christmas and I was on my pezza [period], which I don’t thinks that bad honestly.”

Motivating her followers as the new year gets into full swing, Charlotte shared the secrets to her weight loss, promoting her Belleh Blaster workout plan, continuing: “If you feel like a Christmas chuffin’ pudding, then don’t worry, you’re in the right bloody place. You’re in the right place because this is honestly the best plan ever.”

Slamming so-called ‘fat-jabs’ and shakes, the daughter of iconic comedian, Les Dawson, claimed the workout plan – which claims to ‘accelerate fat burn with fun dance fitness moves’ – was a healthy and sustainable way to loose your festive weight – while also having a laugh.

With her auburn hair loose around her shoulders, Charlotte encouraged her followers to ‘shake their ‘t***y bangers around the living room’ after joining Belleh Blaster, insisting: “We don’t want any boringness! You wanna be like: ‘I can’t wait to shake me bloody t***y bangers round the living room’, because you can do it in the comfort of your own home.”

The influencer told fans she’d lost 1st 13lbs in five months between July and December. And back in July, Charlotte said she was the biggest she had ever been after giving birth to her baby girl Gigi in March last year.

It’s was a rollercoaster year for the bubbly mum, who revealed in December that she was ‘‘stepping away’ indefinitely from her hit podcast Naughty Corner, which she launched in 2025, after her alleged split from fiancé Matt Sarsfield.

The shock split came after a rollercoaster few weeks Charlotte, which saw her reportedly break up with partner following a furious row at a party – then do a U-turn and get back together with him, just days later.

In a statement, the former Ex On the Beach star revealed that it was the “right time” to take a step back from her no-holds-barred weekly parenting podcast, in which she would often reveal hilarious and candid updates on her family life.

Jessie Buckley says she was ‘brutalised’ on Andrew Lloyd Webber reality show

The West End actress finished in second place on the show which saw contestants compete to win the role of Nancy in the West End production of hit musical Oliver!

Hamnet star Jessie Buckley says she was ‘brutalised’ and faced ‘unfair objectification’ as she lifted the lid on her experience of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s TV talent show I’d Do Anything.

The actress was just 17 when she appeared on the reality show, which saw contestants compete to win the role of Nancy in the West End production of hit musical Oliver!

Jessie, who is now 36, finished in second place behind Jodie Prenger. She says she struggled during the competition, admitting she ‘wasn’t well’.

Jessie told Vogue magazine: “I was 17. I was in a moment of discovery. As women, it’s such unfair objectification … Back then, I was just trying to move into a space of myself.

“I really hope that a 15, 17, whatever-age woman never has to be brutalised quite like what happened on that show. But I didn’t recognise it fully at the time. I just felt it, which was difficult.

‘It’s bonkers, in hindsight. I was just like: ‘Oh my God. I get to peek behind this curtain already. I get to sing. I get to be part of this industry that I really was hoping I could be part of.'”

Jessie says that behind-the-scenes, she was ‘was not well fully’ and felt ‘depressed’. She also says she suffered from ‘a lot of body shaming’.

Jessie was offered the chance to be Jodie’s understudy in Oliver! after the competition but she turned it down. The RADA graduate went on to star in BBC productions such as War and Peace, Taboo, Beast and Wild Rose, in which she played an aspiring country music singer. She was nominated for a BAFTA as a result before going on to land further roles in HBO miniseries Chernobyl and FX’s Fargo. In 2021, she starred as the younger part of Olivia Colman’s character in The Lost Daughter.

In December last year, Jessie became a mother after giving birth to her first child. She kept her pregnancy under wraps until her bump was showing as she attended a red carpet event back in April.

She didn’t say when she gave birth or share any more details, such as her baby’s name, but did confirm she’d welcomed a little girl with her husband, who she also keeps out of the spotlight.

The fiercely private pair married in 2022 and he is only known as Freddie. He is reportedly a mental health professional who is based in North London. They are thought to split their time between homes in London and Norfolk.

Speaking on The New York Times Modern Love podcast , Jessie shared: “Everyone is doing great. I mean, everything is different. It’s intense, but I just love it. Love it so much.”

Though the tot is only a few months old at most, Jessie said: “I really can see her little personality starting to come through. I see this life-force in her and determination. I hope she loves life as much as I do.”

She also shared how she fell pregnant just after filming for her movie Hamnet wrapped. In it she plays a grieving mother – which she says brought on an intense need for her to get pregnant in real life.

Hamnet tells the story of the marriage between characters Anne Hathaway, played by Jessie, and William Shakespeare, played by her co-star Paul Mescal, and the impact the death of their 11-year-old son has on their relationship – which inspired Shakespeare’s famous play, Hamlet.

Revealing how the film impacted her own personal life, Jessie said: “I’m not surprised I got pregnant a week after I finished filming because I had coaxed… it was also quite intense to have that need while I was in this place of absolute mother and it not be a real thing yet.

“There were moments where it broke my heart because I was living this altered world, where I was absolutely that. Well, just be patient…

“I think when I was filming Hamnet, I deeply wanted to become a mother myself. And it was such a gift to move through this woman and her motherhood and her love and her loss before I became a mother myself.

“I think even getting pregnant, and throughout my pregnancy, how I was thinking about what kind of birth I wanted and how I would be autonomous in choosing that as much as I could was very empowering.”

Discussing what she hoped to impart onto her little one as she grows up, Jessie added: “I think the thing I can hope to impart to her, and I’m sure she’s going to go on her whole own trajectory – and she should – is we have one life.

“There’s always going to be things in our life that are going to make us doubt or be afraid or feel like it would be safer to be smaller in some way.

“I see this little life that’s so new, but so full and so untarnished by an idea or a projection of what we’re supposed to be. I just hope that if I can pass anything onto her in the way that my mother’s has passed on to me is that all the parts of you are not too much.

“‘The world needs all of you, and that means incubating the struggles, is like living through the struggles, the shadows. The things that are going to challenge you, you have to metabolise it and incubate it. And there’s no too-muchness. It’s only to be lived fully.”

Andrew Lloyd-Webber and the BBC have been contacted for comment.

The perfect winter coat should be two things; timeless and warm. They can be an investment worth splashing out on, which means picking something that won’t go out of style and you can re-wear year after year is essential.

One coat that caught our eye and checks both of these boxes is Nobody’s Child’s Brown Long Borg Duffle Coat which is the perfect combination of style and practicality to wear this winter. The coat is usually priced at £155, but currently Nobody’s Child shoppers can save 15% when they use the code EXTRA15 , bringing it down to £131.75.

The Brown Long Borg Duffle Coat is made from a super soft cosy teddybear-style fabric that’s guaranteed to keep the heat in and the cold out, making sure you stay warm even in the subzero temperatures. It features a funnel neck which can be fastened to keep the chill out, and is lightly lined to add extra warmth and a high end finish.

It’s timeless design means this is something you can wear every winter without worrying about looking dated. It has a longline length and fastens with traditional duffel coat toggle closures up the front which are finished in faux leather trim.

It’s available in sizes extra small to extra large, although the Nobody’s Child site says the Brown Long Borg Duffle Coat has a “roomy fit” and recommends sizing down. Of course, the extra room does make it great for adding plenty of layers underneath if you prefer a more oversized fit.

Some similar styles you can pick up elsewhere include the ASOS DESIGN Longline Shearling Coat in Chocolate which will set you back £95 and has a similar sophisticated look with a little bit of an edge. We also love this Anthology Chocolate Borg Parka which is now £81 down from £108, and the Chocolate Faux Fur Tie Waist Maxi Coat, which is now £60 down from £75, if you fancy something a little more glam.

However Nobody’s Child shoppers have sung the praises of the Brown Long Borg Duffle Coat, giving it a 4.8 out of 5 star rating. One said: “Coziest, warmest and most beautiful coat I have ever bought! I literally cannot stop wearing it with every outfit.”

Whilst another wrote: “Such a great buy. Warm and cosy but baggy enough to fit layers on underneath. Feels timeless, something I’ll have in my wardrobe for years. Good quality too.”

With a third adding: “I recently purchased this coat and every time I wear it I get asked where it’s from. It’s oversized which I love and it completes a stylish casual look. It’s also super warm and snuggly.”

Some complaints included one buyer who wrote: “Definitely not a super warm winter coat but looks good and being long it keeps you warm enough.”

Whilst another said: “The coat is nice but overpriced for what you get. I would have expected better material which for £155.00 is poor.”

However, plenty of others hailed it for how ‘gorgeous’ it looks, saying: “Never had so many complements when I wear this gorgeous coat. I now want to get the other colour as well!”
