‘Louis Tomlinson is finally being recognised and bravely opening up – it’s about time’

Louis Tomlinson found fame in the world’s biggest band, but in recent years, he’s had to fight to prove himself as a soloist, and this shouldn’t have been the case, writes Daniel Bird

Louis Tomlinson has proved time and time again he’s worthy of solo success, so why is he only just being recognised? His life completely changed when he was put into One Direction, becoming a household name across the globe.

Since leaving The X Factor in 2010, the five lads —Louis, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Zayn Malik —went on to sell an eye-watering 70 million records worldwide. What many may not know is that Louis wrote a significant number of One Direction’s songs.

This is something he’s honed in over the years and has truly become perfect at. Now, I’m not going to lie, I spent years following 1D up and down the country, possibly spending thousands (and also skipping a lot of sixth-form and uni), so I’ve seen first-hand just what a genuine person Louis is.

He’s never shied away from his Doncaster roots or being outspoken, something which I can only praise him for. The group disbanded in 2016, and four years later, Louis dropped his debut solo album, Walls, which, im my opinion, was a masterpiece. I was shocked to see it chart at Number 4 on the Official UK Charts.

This changed, though, with the release of Faith in the Future, which Louis released two years later, debuting at Number 1 – which is where it deserved to be. It’s fair to say that Louis hasn’t always been perceived in the best way, which is a shame.

I’ve met him several times over the years, as have my friends, and he’s always been such an incredibly down-to-earth person. The first time I met him, was very accidental, I was walking through Manchester and he just happened to be on the other side of the road. So you bet I ran across that road, myself and friends probably spent about five minutes with him, and it was as though we were with an old pal.

The second time, I purposely went to his radio tour in Liverpool, although there were hundreds of fans waiting, he made sure to take time to say hello to each and every person, happily posed for pictures and chatted about things with people.

The genuineness in him is probably the South Yorkshire spirit which has been instilled in him. His late mum, Johannah, was also the most caring person I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Whether it be at a 1D gig or outside (sometimes inside) a hotel, she had a natural warmth about her; it didn’t matter that her son was about to perform to 80,000 people, she was always happy to talk. This is something Louis has about him, he’s always the first to meet fans, check they’re ok and spend time with them – he doesn’t have to do this, but he does, proving that despite the fame and wealth, he’s still the same grounded lad who auditioned for The X Factor all those years ago.

Tonight, Louis appeared on the Diary of a CEO Podcast, which I was extremely pleased about. He rarely gives interviews, and I cannot blame him. Over the years, he’s suffered extreme heartache, so it must be tough for him to open up. But in this interview, I have to applaud Louis for taking part.

Opening up about the death of a loved one is never easy, so to see Louis speak so openly about his incredible mother, Johannah, filled me with such joy. It really brought home just how much of a wonderful woman Johannah was, instilling such positive memories and a bright influence on Louis’ life, which still echoes to this day.

I remember the day Louis performed his debut single, Just Hold On, live on The X Factor, just days after Johannah’s death. I was blown away. Despite that heartbreak, he got up there and performed such a powerful song, and it broke me. I have no idea how Louis managed it, but does that just not prove my point? He’s a phenomenal artist and put his heart and soul into that gig.

Hearing him talking about Donny just reminded me that, after all, he’s a South Yorkshire lad. I’ve been lucky enough to call South Yorkshire my home for the past eight years, and spent the majority of my teens in my beloved county, and Louis has never turned his back on his hometown, which could have been easy for somebody who’s rumoured to have homes in Los Angeles, as well as a pad in London.

Louis spoke about grief to Steven Bartlett, following the death of Johannah and his younger sister, Felicity, and it hit home for me. It’s such a weird feeling, and to hear somebody you admire and respect, essentially saying: “Hey, it’s alright to feel angry and hit out at the world for what you’ve been through,” just allows fans to have a closer relationship with that musician, something Louis has always shown he’s happy to do.

His next album, How Did I Get Here?, which is set to be released next year, is already proving to be Louis’ most honest and open record. In the past, he’s experimented with different sounds (for what it’s worth, they all worked…), but listening to the tune of Lemonade, the first single from the record, was just something else.

I can’t put my finger on it; it has so many different elements to the track, but it has Louis’ distinct sound woven into it and somehow still stands out from his previous bodies of work. It has such a feel good sound to it, so I’m excited to hear the rest of the album.

“On this record, it feels like the palette is a lot deeper, there is a lot more to say, but there’s a lot more colour on there as well,” he told Steven, which is particularly interesting. Louis admits his success is very different to what other people may think when they hear that word – and has he achieved what he’s set out to do? Probably not but do I believe he’s on the right path? Absolutely.

It baffles me how it has taken so long for Louis to be recognised for his music, his Away From Home Festival, which provides such an incredible opportunity for fans and musicians, and his philanthropic achievements.

Am I excited for Louis’ future? Yes, I absolutely am. Will I be seeing him on tour (his biggest tour…) next year? I wouldn’t miss it. Am I happy he’s finally being recognised by the industry and gaining more fans? One hundred per cent.

Louis Tomlinson’s heartbreaking promise to dead mum – that still drives him today

Former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson has been open about suffering grief throughout his life, following the death of his mum in 2016 and the death of his sister in 2019

Louis Tomlinson has spoken about how grief has impacted his life and deaths of loved ones made him feel “guilty” – but he now has a “new sense of life” and is in love again.

In a revealing interview the former One Direction star spoke of losing his mother Johannah Deakin in 2016 around the height of his fame. His sister Felicity died from a fatal combination of drugs in March 2019 and close friend and former bandmate Liam Payne died after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires last year.

But the interview with Steven Bartlett for his Diary of a CEO podcast had more upbeat moments as he mentioned being in “love” with new girlfriend Zara McDermott and also feeling positive about his life now.

Singer Louis, 33, said losing his mum aged just 42 to leukaemia was very difficult to cope with.

He recalled: “Obviously, there’s no good time for anything like this, but I think the timing created a bit of…true resentment for the world. Like, real resentment. Just feeling really hard done by.

“One thing I remember about grief, when you’re in the midst of it, you could stub your toe, right? And something like that is just utterly unjust. Little things like that I really struggled with when I was grieving. Because of the weight of stuff that had happened, there was just a moment in my life, for about six months, where it felt like I couldn’t win, and in fact, I could only lose.”

He agreed to perform on stage with One Direction three days after her death as he had promised her he would but said the three-and-a-half minutes on stage were the most challenging of his life.

Moving on to discuss his sister Felicity, he added: “I couldn’t believe how deeply unlucky we’d been as a family. Maybe it’s not overly uncommon…but at the time, I felt angry at life and I felt angry on behalf of my family.

“I wouldn’t be thinking, ‘What have I done to deserve this?’, it was more Daisy and Phoebe are so young, and Lottie [his sisters] as well. They’ve already had so much to deal with. Why this and why now? It did feel incredibly, incredibly unfair.”

“I’d been worried about Felicity for months prior as I was worried about all my sisters. The doorbell rang at one in the morning or something, maybe midnight, and I had this feeling come over me straight away… they told me that she had passed away and I literally was like, ‘Okay’, I can’t tell you why. Not only was I in denial at the moment, I just refused to compute it.”

When Liam Payne died, it took Louis back to that time again. He explained: “I had the same feeling that I had with Felicity, and I think anyone has this when they’re around someone who’s struggling; my 150% wasn’t nearly enough. And that’s when it’s my own arrogance thinking that I could have helped really, because it was so much deeper than what I could have done for him. He was definitely struggling at that time in his life.

“I think that was a tough thing for all of us, working out ‘Who am I outside of Liam in One Direction? Louis in One Direction? Who am I? What does that look like?’ And that question’s intimidating.

“I could just go on and talk all day about how amazing he was, but I think we all looked up to him. I don’t think we would have been brave enough to say at that age when I was in the band, I think I would’ve had too much pride, but we all looked up to him massively.”

Although he is good friends with Zayn Malik and they are set to work together again, Louis said he felt much closer to Liam than the other band members and their conversations were more in-depth. This also makes it harder for Louis to believe he has gone.

On discussing life after One Direction with other band members, Louis said: “To be honest, that would only happen between me and Liam. Between me and the other boys, not that it’s not emotional because it is, and it’s definitely deeper than surface level, but I would struggle to text the other boys as much […] it’s just all a bit small talk. Which is lovely, and it’s nice to catch up like that, but me and Liam would always speak on a much more deep level […] I feel bad saying this because I feel arrogant but I shouldn’t, but I wanted to look after him. That was a role I feel like I was there to play.”

He added: “I would say he [Liam] was the closest to being my brother. Love him deeply, could spend hours and hours and hours with him, but there was an element of always checking in and just making sure that he was cool like that.”

The interview also features more upbeat themes as Louis discusses his new album How Did I Get Here? Which comes out in January and his newfound happiness as inspiration. In recent months he has begun dating documentary maker Zara McDermott.

And he said: “I’m a deeply, deeply romantic person. It’s also easy to to be romantic when you are a creative. I really struggle to write in a fictional sense, I really struggle.

“For me, I have to have been living it, it has to be real to me. So if I wasn’t feeling so good, like right now, I wasn’t feeling so in love…the record probably would have a slightly different feel to it.”

He added: “One thing I was thinking about with this record, my intention is just to maybe feel good. I know that’s a really cliche and obvious thing to say, but I’m not sure some of my other music did that.

“It made you feel, it was honest, it was painful at times, but it didn’t feel good. So I think now I’ve got this almost new sense of life, a new sense of happiness, and purpose, and fulfilment, all those things.”

And taking inspiration from the Gallagher brothers, Oasis fan Liam also admitted he would not rule out a One Direction reunion one day.

Liam went to see Oasis during their UK comeback shows. And he said: “Never say never, right, but I’m just not sure it would be right to him. Say for the sake of argument, 25 year’s time, it’s like a f*cking Oasis thing, they offer us an arm and a leg, and they’re like, ‘Come back and do this many shows’, I don’t know.

“It’s just completely put a pin in all of that. And the irony is, there was no one campaigning for One Direction to get back more than Liam. I would say I came in a close second.”

Selena Gomez’s kidney donor speaks out as star spotted vaping on her wedding day

Selena Gomez was seen using a vape in footage shared by Taylor Swift after her wedding to Benny Blanco, but there’s also been a huge drama after Francia Raisa’s snub

Francia Raisa, the actress who donated a kidney to Selena Gomez, has broken her silence following her surprising absence from the star’s high-profile wedding. The 37 year old was questioned about a supposed rift with Gomez, which reportedly arose due to her displeasure at seeing photos of the star smoking.

Sharp-eyed fans spotted Selena Gomez indulging in a cheeky habit on her wedding day – after she shared behind-the-scenes footage of her preparations alongside best mate Taylor Swift.

In her latest Instagram post this week, she penned heartfelt words for Swift to celebrate her new album, The Life of a Show Girl. “In honor of SHOWGIRL… blessed to have you by my side almost 20 years later gator! I love you @taylorswift forever and always,” she captioned the post, sharing clips and snaps of them beaming from her special day when she wed Benny Blanco.

She featured footage that Swift had recorded of her perched on a chair before a mirror, having her veil positioned – but some followers couldn’t miss that Gomez, 33, appeared to be clutching what resembled a vape in her grasp.

Once she clocked that she was being filmed, she seemed to attempt concealing the gadget in her hands, though it was already too late, as one supporter captured a screenshot and shared it on X, previously Twitter.

“Lmao she covered it too late, I see it,” the user posted. Nevertheless, the responses from her admirers sparked divided opinions, with some finding the incident ‘hilarious’ whilst others branded it ‘crazy.’

“The vape is crazy,” one person responded on X. Another claimed, “Now why is Miss Selena puffing on a Juul in the year 2025. “She definitely tried, but the cover-up came way too late,” someone else typed. “On her wedding day? ! Disgusting!” another person fumed. “This is so endearing to me… oh to be a lovely, lovely bride with a disposable in hand,”A lovely, lovely bride with a disposable in hand,” one person confessed.

The type of vape she was holding remains a mystery, but it’s not the first time she’s been spotted in a similar predicament. In June, a fan account shared footage of Gomez seemingly vaping while getting her hair and makeup done for a night out with mate Taylor Swift on 31 May.

Gomez, who battles lupus and underwent a kidney transplant in 2017, was seen exhaling a vapour-like mist while browsing on her iPhone. Another shot showed her clutching what appeared to be an e-cigarette or vape pen, which typically emits an aerosol containing nicotine, in her left hand as makeup artist Hung Vanngo applied her eyeliner.

Raisa donated a kidney to Gomez, 33, in 2017 after the Spring Breakers star was diagnosed with lupus. Despite giving Gomez a new lease of life through her donation, it seems she was omitted from the guest list for the Only Murders in the Building star’s recent wedding to music producer Benny Blanco.

However, in a recent interview, seemingly filmed at a bookstore event, Raisa wished Gomez well ahead of her wedding while speaking in Spanish. She stated: “I know she’s getting married, and I’m very happy for her. And look… she has a life and she is already a billionaire and I am grateful that I could do that for her,” according to translated subtitles. “Look, from the beginning the doctor told me, it’s a donation.”

“If you’re going to donate a quid to St. Jude or somewhere else, you’re not going to ring up and say, ‘What are you doing with my quid?’ I’m grateful that I am alive and I can say that I have saved a life. I never said anything when that rumour came out that I had gotten angry or something like that because she was smoking. No one knows what’s going on and neither she nor I are talking about it and maybe [one day] we’ll address it.”

When asked what advice she would give to anyone considering organ donation, Raisa stressed that the process is about saving someone’s life, not forming a special bond with them.

In a candid 2018 interview, Raisa confessed that both she and Gomez suffered a bout of depression following the kidney donation procedure, which nearly claimed Gomez’s life after one of her arteries burst during surgery.

Victoria Beckham Netflix premiere is a family affair but Brooklyn fails to show

Celebrities, friends and family were out in full force for the Victoria Beckham Netflix premiere tonight, ahead of its release on Netflix tomorrow

Dame Victoria Beckham was joined by her family and friends for the world premiere of her new Netflix series tonight. The 51-year-old former Spice Girl and fashion designer was the guest of honour for the event at the Curzon Mayfair cinema.

She was accompanied by husband David, 50, and once inside was expected to introduce the first episode for invited guests. The three-part documentary series, centres around Victoria preparing for the fashion show of her life in Paris last year. It also features stories and footage beginning from the teenager who restyled her school uniform, to the Spice Girl who fought to be accepted by a notoriously demanding fashion industry.

The three-part series is released tomorrow and features interviews with fashion bosses and, of course, David and Victoria.

Netflix already enjoyed success with a series about the career of Victoria’s husband David.

Now the singer-turned-designer, 51, has a new found confidence since entering her 50s and is ready to unleash a new aspect of her personality previously unseen by many.

“Getting older is – actually, there’s a side of it that’s really great,” Victoria admits ahead of her new series premiering. “The filter comes off, and you give a s**t less. I’m really enjoying that.”

The upcoming series, simply titled Victoria Beckham, will see the mum-of-four look back on her time with the Spice Girls as Posh Spice, her marriage to football legend David and the battle to shake off the pop star tag in order to become a respected fashion designer.

The three-part programme, which is crafted by the same team behind the Emmy award-winning BECKHAM series, features exclusive chats and shocking revelations and the docuseries will give viewers an unprecedented peek behind the curtain of Victoria Beckham’s world.

In a previous trailer, Victoria said: “Throughout my life, I’ve used clothes to become someone else, be the person that I always wanted to be, that maybe naturally I wasn’t.

“I used to customise the school uniform in the bathroom at lunchtime. I used to love watching my mum get dressed up, you know she really cared and made the best of herself.

“I remember my mum saying to me if you dress up to get on the aeroplane, if there’s any chance of being upgraded they’re always going to look at who looks the best. I mean the truth is, there is no first class on budget air lines.”

Posting the teaser on Instagram, Netflix captioned: “Victoria Beckham looks back on the importance of fashion in her life VICTORIA BECKHAM comes to Netflix October 9.”

Big Brother star George breaks silence after show axe over ‘unacceptable behaviour’

George was removed from the Big Brother house after using ‘unacceptable language’ after repeated warnings – with insiders saying the comments won’t be aired

Big Brother contestant George Gilbert has broken his silence since being removed from the house. ITV made the decision to pull him out after he used “unacceptable language”.

Essex-based George has been a controversial figure on the show, as he regularly clashed with other contestants over his political opinions, which included harsher crackdowns on the illegal migration of asylum seekers. He also offended several of his housemates with his some of his behaviour, such as doing a homophobic impression of another contestant that earned him a formal warning from Big Brother.

However, his time on the show has come to an end, after he allegedly made an anti-semitic comment in unaired footage. George has since spoken out about his removal from Big Brother.

“As a flag bearer of freedom of speech, I never hesitate to discuss and question any topic regardless of how contentious it may be,” the 23-year-old said.

“Sadly, the boundaries of what is deemed offensive are subjective and I evidently went too far this time by crossing their line one too many times. It is a shame that specific debate could not be had and that it has had to end like this. Infamy, infamy, they’ve all got it in for me.”

George has been caught up in controversy since he entered the Big Brother house on 30 September. Within minutes of his arrival, he seemed to fat-shame fellow housemate Cameron Kinch by telling him not to eat a biscuit.

He then spent several episodes bringing up his views on immigration with the other contestants, angering several by suggesting asylum seekers are treated better than British citizens and repeatedly calling the migrants “illegal”.

He caused contestant Sam Ashby to break down in tears after he did a homophobic impression of their hand movements. George was given a formal warning after this and apologised to Sam, but later nominated them for eviction because he felt he had to watch what he said and “walk on eggshells” around them.

The following day, George also upset Derry girl Jenny Baird, by interrupting her and calling her “love” during an argument about addiction.

He continued to spark fury among fans by saying all the women in the house “look and think the same”. His comments about Pakistan Independence Day celebrations in the UK led housemate another biracial housemate to say they’d “never had my Britishness called into question” like that before.

Big Brother has shown all of this behaviour, and an incident where Caroline Monk misgendered trans housemate Zelah Glasson. But producers felt the comment which led to George’s removal was too severe to air.

In a statement, they said: “Following repeated use of unacceptable language and behaviour, George has been removed from the Big Brother House with immediate effect and will no longer participate in the programme.” George’s removal will feature in tonight’s (9 October) episode.

Copy Claudia Winkleman with these Traitors-inspired fashion finds from the high street

The popular BBC show returns tonight with a celebrity spin-off and we can’t wait to see what host Claudia wears

With The Traitors returning to our screens with a celebrity edition tonight (October 8), Claudia Winkleman steps back into the dramatic Scottish Highlands delivering plenty of inspo-worthy outerwear moments. Claudia’s daring silhouettes and bold outer layers had everyone talking last season, and we’ve scoured the high street for some faithful picks to replicate her iconic look on a budget.

As well as cosy oversized knitwear and knee high boots, another staple of Claudia’s Traitor’s wardrobe is her choice of coats and jackets, which must stand up to the climes of the Scottish Highlands. Cape coats have previously proven popular with the eyeliner-loving presenter, with their silhouette bringing more drama than a night at the round table.

Tailored and timeless, the cape coat is perfect for layering over smart and casual outfits alike, instantly elevating a look without trying too hard. The best part? Fashion fans don’t have to spend designer prices to get the look, with brands like Nobody’s Child and River Island all offering a twist on the trend for 2025.

READ MORE:

We’ve also hunted down some kilts, blazers and boots perfect for recreating Claudia’s outfits, with selections from M&S, Next and Boden. Here are my top picks.

River Island Cream Scarf Cape – £52

When you see this River Island number, it’s easy to see why the cape trend is having a moment again. Elegant and endlessly versatile, this cream cape instantly elevates any outfit. I especially love the scarf detail which sets it apart from some of the other designs on the market.

The cape comes in two sizes and offers all the polish of a tailored coat with the ease of a throw-on knit. It’s the ultimate transitional piece – ideal for crisp morning commutes, cosy weekend strolls, or dressed-up dinners alike. However, Claudia seems to favour darker hues, and this light-coloured option could be prone to marking, which may put off more practical fashion fans.

Monsoon Ciara Cape Coat – £130

For something that taps into that same mysterious, moody aesthetic that’s set to dominate the season, there’s the Monsoon Ciara Cape Coat, which could also prove to be more practical, too.

Falling just past the hips, it’s smart yet slouchy and available in three sizes, offering more flexibility than River Island’s. It’s complete with button fastenings in a brassy golden tone, and is the kind of piece that makes the outfit rather than covers it up. The downside is that there are currently no reviews for the piece, which some customers may prefer in order to make a more considered purchase, especially considering the higher price point of this one.

Boden Josephine Kilt Midi Skirt – £149

Since The Traitors began, there’s been an increase in demand for traditional country wear such as kilts, and Boden has crafted a gorgeous, contemporary take on a kilt that’s endlessly wearable and versatile. The Josephine Kilt Midi Skirt costs £149 and comes in a deep ‘hunter green’ hue, available in two lengths.

Boden recommends wearing it out to dinner with heels, adding: “You can also wear them with knitwear and boots and trainers and T-shirts.”

The skirt has earned a five star rating so far, with one shopper commenting: “Bought my usual 14R and it fits perfectly. The length is perfect too. Not too long for a midi. Well made and worth the money. The green is nice and subtle too.”

M&S Leather Riding Knee High Boots – £115

Every wardrobe, Traitors inspired or not, should feature a classic pair of knee boots. For a timeless pair you’ll turn to time and time again, these leather riding boots from M&S are a great pick.

The knee-high design has a low block heel for comfortable wear, with a zip fastening that’s been praised by fans for making them easier to pull on and off. “Very comfortable and look great. Very good price. Easy to get on and off,” said one, with another adding: “Excellent fit and quality. Good price for leather boots Would recommend.”

For those looking for a way to bring their old skinny jeans back up to date, tuck them into these boots for an equestrian aesthetic. Alternatively, team with dresses and skirts to channel Claudia’s style. They come in sizes 3-8 including half sizes to help shoppers find the perfect fit.

Nobody’s Child Brown Funnel Neck Cape Jacket – £110

Nobody’s Child is a favourite among celebrities, and this soft to touch and timeless in shape funnel neck cape nods to heritage styling while feeling modern and fresh. Its neutral tone makes it a brilliant layering piece for autumn weekends.

It comes in four sizes ranging from XS to L, with the retailer styling it with a tartan mini skirt and black knee-high boots – a very Traitors-esque look, if we do say so ourselves.

Karen Millen Cape Detail Trench Coat – £88.65

This trench-cape hybrid is a statement piece, with structured lines and a belted waist that echoes Claudia’s strong silhouettes. Originally £149, it’s now down to £104.30 in the sale, but a limited-time promo code COAT15 will see the price drop even further at the checkout, taking it to £88.66.

Unlike some of the other options in this list, Karen Millen’s coat is crafted from cotton for breathable comfort. What’s more is the versatile piece transitions from city commutes to countryside walks with ease.

Next Multi Checked Heritage Brushed Blazer – £87

Finally, it wouldn’t be Claudia’s wardrobe without some heritage checks, and this Next blazer does a wonderful job at emulating her Traitors ensembles. Made with a touch of wool, the brushed fabric features a dark multi-check print with classic features like a notched lapel and patch pockets.
