Acting legend, Dick Van Dyke, is turning 100 this month, but admits he wouldn’t be celebrating anything if he hadn’t given up two of his ‘addictions’

Mary Poppins star, Dick Van Dyke, has revealed which of his vices he had to kick in order to make it to his 100th birthday, which he celebrates this month.

The Diagnosis Murder icon, who boasts 75 years in the acting industry, marks the momentous milestone on Saturday, but reckons he wouldn’t be celebrating anything if he hadn’t overhauled his lifestyle in his 50s.

Revealing that he quit smoking and drinking 50 years ago, Dick – famed for his role as loveable chimney sweep Bert in Mary Poppins – was forced to correct his son, actor, Barry Von Dyck, 74, who said his dad “never smoked too much”.

Setting the record straight, the star told People magazine: “I smoked a lot, actually! I think I was probably in my 50s before it dawned on me that I had an addictive personality. If I liked something, I was going to overdo it. So I got rid of booze and cigarettes and all that stuff, which is probably why I’m still here.”

Speaking at the Vandy High Tea fundraising event – which raised money for theThe Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and the Dick Van Dyke Museum – at his home in Malibu, the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star said he was “probably the last person alive” who got to know and spend time with Walt Disney before the animation legend died of lung cancer in 1966.

Dick lamented: “He was a wonderful guy. He just smoked too much! Doggone.”

The seasoned star checked into rehab in 1973 to help overcome his alcoholism, and while getting sober he also quit smoking. However, he previously admitted he found quitting nicotine to be “twice as hard”.

Speaking on the Real No Really podcast in 2023, Dick said it took him “forever” to give up smoking and added: “It was much worse than the alcohol.”

The father-of-four – who married Arlene Silver, 54, in 2012 – recently admitted he feels “lonely” and “frustrated” in his old age because he’s outlived most of his best friends and he rarely gets to attend glitzy showbiz events because of his declining health.

He told The Times: “Though I still do guest spots on TV, and ads and videos, I miss going to the studio every day for a regular series. And every single one of my dearest lifelong friends is gone, which feels just as lonely as it sounds.

“It’s frustrating to feel diminished in the world, physically and socially.

“I get invites to events or offers for gigs in New York or Chicago, but that kind of travel takes so much out of me that I have to say no. Almost all of my visiting with folks has to happen at my house.”

However, the actor is determined not to become a grumpy old man as Dick continued: “We all have the capacity for a joyful life. I’ve made it to 99 in no small part because I have stubbornly refused to give into the bad stuff in life: failures and defeats, personal losses, loneliness and bitterness, the physical and emotional pains of ageing. That stuff is real but I have not let it define me.

“Instead, for the vast majority of my years, I have been in what I can only describe as a full-on bear hug with the experience of living.”

Angry Ginge has revealed just how much weight he lost on I’m A Celebrity. The content creator was a hit with viewers throughout his stint in the jungle and instantly became the bookies’ favourite.

During a nail-biting grand final on Sunday night, Ginge, whose real name is Morgan Burtwistle, was crowned the winner, with Tom Read Wilson finishing in second place. Former EastEnders actress, Shona McGarty, finished in third place and musician Aitch was voted out on Saturday night.

It has since emerged that Ginge managed to bag 53 per cent of the vote in the final three. But in the final two, Ginge secured 65 per cent of the vote, with Tom getting 35 per cent. Speaking to Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley on Monday’s episode of This Morning, the 24-year-old revealed he lost seven kilograms while in the camp.

When asked about the lack of food, he said: “I was looking forward to that, I went on there as a bit of a weight loss journey, and I lost seven kg, so I can’t say it wasn’t successful.” While laughing, Ginge added: “I’m probably not recognisable.”

Reflecting on reuniting with his mum and sister in the jungle, Ginge added: “That was probably the best feeling in there, as soon as I turned the corner, I saw my mum and sister, my mum’s eyes had already filled up, straight away I started crying, and we had a family hug.”

But as he prepares to leave Australia and head back home, he revealed he cannot wait to watch his beloved Manchester United play again and come out victorious. His first plan will be to see his Nanna and enjoy a curry with her – before getting back to his Twitch streaming.

However, while Ginge admits he was quite different to his campmates, including Tom, he revealed that the pair instantly formed an inseparable bond during their stint Down Under. Speaking about his runner-up, he explained: “Tom is absolutely amazing, we are just completely opposite, but we got on so so well, bonded really well and became quite close in the end.”

After arriving back at his hotel, Ginge was met with snacks including Pringles and a can of Red Bull to boost his energy levels. But there was one thing he had his mind on – a full English breakfast, which he devoured, but he laughed when revealing that he left the tomatoes on the side so he could focus on hash browns.

One memorable moment of Ginge’s experience was winning milk bottle sweets with Kelly Brook and his close pal Aitch. But unbeknownst to their campmates, the trio secretly ate some of the sweet treats before returning to camp. This, however, became public knowledge when Kelly dropped the bombshell that they’d eaten some when she was evicted.

Ginge said: “I’ll be honest, Kelly, she bottled that one if you pardon the pun, she just said there was more than 10, so we could play it off as 13, if she said there were 20, we were going to struggle. I didn’t enjoy stealing them, but I’m not going to lie, they were bloody delicious.”

Having found fame on social media thanks to streaming, Ginge spends a significant proportion of his day on his phone and laptop, something which he now admits will change once he’s back in the United Kingdom. He said: “I think it’s matured me into more of a family man, I take for granted going for meals with my family, always on my phone.”

Now, though, he will make a more conscious effort to keep off his phone when he’s around his family. He also wants to spend more time seeing his close friends, as well as cutting back on fizzy drinks.

As he was crowned on Sunday night, Ginge told hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly: “I feel amazing. Honestly, (it is a) dream come true. I did not think I’d go all this way, never mind win, so thank you to everyone who voted.”

Tim Westwood has arrived at court after being charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault. The former BBC Radio 1 broadcaster was at Southwark Crown Court, just weeks after he was granted conditional bail on November 10.

The 68-year-old appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court last month and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. He is accused of offences against seven different women, some of whom were aged 17 at the time.

Westwood was charged in October this year with four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault. The alleged incidents are believed to have taken place between 1993 and 2016. Westwood denies all allegations made against him. He previously said: “It’s all false allegations.”

Police have previously said that Westwood allegedly indecently assaulted a 17-year-old girl in Fulham, west London, in 1983. He also faces allegations of indecently assaulting a woman in her 20s in the Vauxhall area of London in 1986.

He’s also accused of raping and indecently assaulting a woman, aged between 17 and 18, between 1995 and 1996 in London. Westwood, who lives in Westminster, is also accused of raping and indecently assaulting a woman between the ages of 17 and 18 between 2000 and 2001 in London.

He faces a further accusation of sexually assaulting another woman, aged in her 20s, in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 2010. He also faces an allegation of assaulting a woman, believed to be in her 20s, in the Finchley area of London in 2016.

Andy Furphy, Detective Superintendent of the Metropolitan Police, said: “It takes courage to come forward and report allegations of this nature.

“The women who have done so have put their trust in us and we continue to provide them with all available support. Our investigation remains open and we’d encourage anyone who has been impacted by this case or anyone with information to come forward and speak with us.”

Westwood stepped down from his programme on Capital Xtra in April 2022. He also left Radio 1 and Radio 1 Xtra in 2013 – almost two decades after he joined the BBC.

He also presented the MTV UK programme, Pimp My Ride UK, which aired for three seasons between 2005 and 2007.

Huw Edwards, the disgraced BBC news presenter, has sparked speculation that he could be preparing to make a TV comeback.

The fallen BBC newsreader has posted a brooding professional portrait online, while he pulled his £4.75million family home in Dulwich from estate agent websites.

The 64-year-old convicted sex offender had been attempting to sell the huge six-bedroom property in Dulwich Village, South London for over 12 months – but despite repeated price slashes had failed to tempt buyers.

Estate agents had originally listed the mid-century mansion for a whopping £4.75million, but after months without any interest slashed the price repeatedly, first by £250,000, then £500,000, then again – by £750,000.

But last week the listing suddenly disappeared from estate agents’ public websites. Meanwhile, however, the disgraced presenter – once one of the BBC’s most respected and highest-paid broadcasters – seems to be hoping for a return to the public eye.

On Sunday, Edwards updated his official Facebook page with the professional-looking black-and-white headshot, which sees him wearing a suit jacket, with a vague smile and some white stubble.

One follower of his account online wrote, ‘Is he on the comeback trail? Why else would he suddenly get a professional portrait done?

They added, ‘Surely he can’t think that a well-lit headshot and a scrap of stubble will soften the memory of everything that’s happened.’

Under the new snap, Edwards liked each comment beneath, including some positive ones, such as one which read. ‘Miss your newsreading, mate’ and, ‘Good luck for the future, Huw.’

Edwards’ career came spectacularly crashing down last year, after he pleaded guilty in July 2024 to accessing indecent photographs of children in July 2024, just months after he quit his esteemed job at the BBC upon ‘medical advice’.

It was the culmination of a shocking year which began when the father-of-five was named as the presenter at the centre of a scandal over payments to a young person for sexually explicit images.

Last September, he dodged jail time when he was given a six month suspended sentence, as the BBC demanded he repay £200,000 of taxpayer-funded salary received, after his arrest in November 2023.

Edwards and his then-wife Vicky Flind – who is believed to have filed for divorce in October 2024 after 30 years of marriage, are believed to have bought their luxury Dulwich home for some £1.85million in 2006 and thought to own it outright.

Advertised by estate agents Pedder, the residence was described as ‘substantial family home’ and on ‘one of Dulwich’s most desirable residential roads’.

Seen in previous adverts posted online were images of a pool table beside a cosy living room with a large skylight. Another image revealed a room with a piano in it.

The asking price slashed most recently down to £4million in May, the 4,200 sq ft house remains unsold, with the listing updated to read: ‘This property has been removed by the agent.’

Edwards’ Facebook post is the first public move he has made since his conviction, the former darling of the BBC remaining firmly out of the public eye.

The last time he was seen was in August, holding three mini bottles of Prosecco as he walked towards his car in Swansea, South Wales, sporting a new white beard and glasses.

Edwards had enjoyed a distinguished four-decade career at the BBC, covering key events including the London 2012 Oympics and the death and funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
