Carol Vorderman, a former Radio Wales presenter, claims that during her career, BBC bosses have “sacked” her twice, most recently because she’s been criticizing the Conservative government in 2023.

Carol Vorderman aimed a dig at the BBC after claiming she was the “only presenter to have been sacked twice” by the broadcaster. Carol first joined the corporation in 1994 as the co-presenter of Tomorrow’s World.

She spent under a year at the show before leaving after concerns were raised about her filming adverts while appearing on the science and technology news show. She later rejoined the BBC in 2019 as a Saturday morning presenter on Radio Wales.

However four years later she left the station after bosses raised concerns about her anti-government social media posts. At the time Carol she was “not prepared to lose my voice” around social issues.

Carol was questioned about being “biffed off” by the BBC for her “pretty outspoken” opinions about the Conservative government on the Off Air with Jane and Fi podcast. The 65-year-old responded, “I rail against things that are wrong in society, not in the house.”

She continued, “The BBC has only ever fired me twice in my career.” I received a badge that reads “Sacked twice by the BBC,” which I’m most proud of.

“I always had a plan B when I first sacked in the middle of the 1990s.” Because the times tables and GCSEs had only just begun to appear online, I established my own TV production company with about 30-35 employees back then.

“They were sold in Woolworths and Smiths, so I always had a plan B and I was always on Countdown. Countdown was Channel 4 ’s biggest show for many, many years and the BBC approached me and said ‘Can you host Tomorrow’s World?’”

Carol continued, explaining that according to their market analysis, BBC executives thought she would make a good program fit. She claims that after her agent informed her that Countdown had given her a “very nice” offer but that she would have to leave.

I continued, “I asked, Are they having a laugh?” I’ve earned four times more than that for Countdown. No, no, just repeat the word “no” in a very polite manner. So he turned very nicely, and then they turned back, and it turned backward and forward, and finally I accepted and continued to work on Countdown.

The pressure then erupted to “We want you to be our biggest female name in prime time but you have to give up Countdown,” and I responded, “I’m not giving up Countdown so can you back off, that’s not happening.”

Carol claims that the broadcaster then gave her a warning about making washing powder advertisements. She continued, “They fired me, so I fought back, writing for The Sun and anyone else who would allow me to.”

She explained that Gary Rhodes and Terry Wogan, both of whom are BBC stars, were producing advertisements. However, the bosses still opted to “scrap” all of Carol’s BBC projects.

She claims the BBC eventually let her back, but she later said, “We will reject it if you tell anyone we offered you your job back.” She continued, “I thought, Stuff you.”
