Cardi B faces a battery lawsuit after allegedly hurling a microphone into the crowd during a 2023 performance. The 32-year-old rapper was performing at Drai’s Beach Club in Las Vegas on July 29, 2023, when she allegedly launched her microphone at an unnamed audience member.

According to court records obtained by PEOPLE in Clark County, Nevada, Cardi “appeared onstage in apparent high-temperature conditions and verbally requested that the audience splash water on her” while holding a microphone. The plaintiffs claim that Cardi “made numerous gestures and statements encouraging concertgoers to throw water, implicitly allowing and inviting light splashing from drinks.”

She physically reacted to splashes by slapping her posterior as audience-thrown liquids made contact with her by pouring water from a bottle over her body while onstage, further demonstrating her consent and participation.

In the court papers, the alleged victim, named Jane Doe, asserts that she splashed a small amount of her drink in Cardi B’s direction in “accordance with the environment, “and” in a manner consistent with other attendees.

She claims, however, that Cardi “threw her microphone directly at her, making her experience an imminent harmful contact” in “aggressive anger and without warning” and “admittedly without warning.” The woman claimed that the microphone “made contact with her,” making offensive and unconsensual physical contact and injuring her.

She claims in court documents that Cardi should have known that the microphone “presented a foreseeable risk of physical injury when thrown,” and that it was a wrongdoing and retaliatory act that produced harmful and offensive contact.

She added that Cardi’s actions were “excessive, disproportionate, and conducted in a public venue, causing additional reputational and emotional harm,” and that she claimed she suffered “severe emotional distress, shock, humiliation, and physical injury.”

She is suing Drai’s Management Group for negligence, as well as assault, battery, and other charges.

What has been viewed as a joke by many people is actually a traumatic event that has had a significant impact on my health and quality of life, she told people. In order to hold Cardi B accountable, I’m seeking justice.

The filing of a civil lawsuit against Cardi, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, is a transparent and pitiful attempted financial shakedown, according to Drew Findling, a lawyer for Cardi, who represents her.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Clark County District Attorney’s Office both closed this case for lack of evidence, but it appears that some willing law firms were too scared to try to profit from a famous person.
