Captain Salah and leave out Haaland? FPL team of the week

I took a brave, and possibly rash, step further this week by betting against Erling Haaland with the captain’s armband despite having only marginal success last gameweek; he isn’t even in the FPL team of the week!

Gulp.

It’s believed that Newcastle away is one of the most difficult games ever, so it’s another chance to take the captaincy of a different team and perhaps get a kick off the field.

In six league and cup games versus the Magpies, Haaland has only scored once.

In the next three weeks, the majority of managers will give the Manchester City striker a second chance when he faces Leeds, Fulham, and Sunderland.

If you’re not guiding him, Haaland is an expensive asset in your team, along with Mohamed Salah’s $14.2 million this week. In my opinion, having both makes your team weaker.

Let’s see if this strategy works or has a bad outcome!

As if you were playing a Free Hit, the team of the week is chosen based on the current FPL prices to fit within a £100m budget.

What was the team’s performance last week?

The key moments of a 45-point week included Joao Pedro’s (14 points) and Morgan Gibbs-White’s (11 points), which was seven over the team’s (very low average) 38-point performance.

Protector and defense

Arsenal keeper David Raya, £57,9 million Tottenham (h)

Why not choose the keeper from the league’s best defense when no game this week comes out as an obvious clean sheet?

Arsenal’s defense could prevent Spurs from playing, whether Gabriel is injured or not.

The team have only four points from their previous five games, and they don’t appear to be firing at the ball.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, £5.9 million, Nottingham Forest (h)

Liverpool will kick off its favorable upcoming fixture series with a home game against a Forest side that has only two points and two goals on the road this season.

Malo Gusto, Chelsea, £4.9m – Burnley (a)

This defense has three clean sheets in its previous four games, and Burnley will want one more.

The Clarets haven’t been particularly effective with their attacks, scoring 14 goals so far. They only managed goals against Manchester City and Manchester United despite failing to find the net against Spurs, Liverpool, and Arsenal.

There is therefore a 50-50 chance of a clean sheet for Gusto, but his 15-point goal in the previous gameweek shows that he also has some attacking potential.

Bournemouth’s Marco Senesi, West Ham (H) for £5 million

In eight of his eleven games this year, Senesi now has defensive contribution points (defcon).

West Ham have won this game twice in a row at home to Newcastle and Burnley, but I don’t think they have suddenly turned the tables.

However, after last year’s humiliation away at Aston Villa, Bournemouth will want a strong showing at home.

Fulham, Joachim Andersen, £4.5 million – Sunderland (h)

Another affordable game defcon magnet.

Sunderland are fourth in the league, but they have only scored three goals in five away games.

Midfielders

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (captain), £14.2 million- Nottingham Forest (h)

No denying that Salah had a disappointing season.

However, his underlying data still provides plenty of indications that we might soon encounter some of the old Salah.

No player has more than five big chances, and he leads all others in the number of chances created (21).

He also leads all shots in the box (23) and third overall (27).

Consider three more points, though, because only four goals and two assists after 11 games is not enough to support the situation:

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, £8.9 million signing, Everton (h)

A man with better stats than Salah is presented here.

Without his two missed penalties, Fernandes would be close to Antoine Semenyo as the top midfielder because he consistently has a defcon rate (he has only averaged eight points this season).

Just a consistently good FPL player with free kicks and penalties in his locker.

United have won four home games this season and have a top-five attack, which should score at least a couple goals against Everton.

With Benjamin Sesko’s injury, Fernandes might also play a more advanced role against Everton.

Everton (h) vs. Bryan Mbeumo, Manchester United, £8.5 million

This week, we’re going all in on United’s attack, and Mbeumo is the obvious choice.

In his previous five games, he has four goals and an assist, and he leads the pack among midfielders in terms of shots on target, big chances, and box shots.

Sesko could also play center-forward in his absence.

Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, West Ham (h), $8.1 million

The current star of the season has now had four duff games: 4, 3, 2, and zero points.

In those games, he only managed six shots, including a missed penalty.

Semenyo must now turn things around in a home game against the league’s second-worst defense, which concedes 23 goals.

Owners may be right to be concerned if not, which is nearly 64% of FPL managers.

Keep an eye on Semenyo’s ankle injury, which forced him to miss the most recent game against Ghana; Marcus Tavernier ($5.5 million) makes a respectable budget backup option.

Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh, £6 million- Brentford (h)

Minteh might be the game’s best midfielder at £6 million.

If you’ve watched any of his recent games, you’ll see that he has five assists, five more than any other midfielder, and he’s also allowed five in the process of almost leaving a lot of chances and nearly scoring.

His xG, for instance, is 2.1, but he only has one goal. Over the course of a season, players’ xG tends to outperform.

Striker

Joao Pedro, Chelsea, £7.7m – Burnley (a)

One man is in charge this week in Haaland’s absence.

I support Chelsea’s attacking prowess in a game where Joao Pedro has scored twice in two league games against Burnley’s obstinate home defense.

Subs bench

Everton keeper Senne Lammens, Manchester United, for £5 million

Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert, £4.5 million signing, West Ham (h)

Leeds striker Lukas Nmecha, £5 million Aston Villa (h)

Marc Guiu, Chelsea, striker, £4.2m – Burnley (a)
