Victoria Mboko, a teen, defeated top seed Coco Gauff to reach the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open in Montreal.

The 18-year-old Canadian was denied a wildcard entry into the main draw after only 62 minutes to defeat the two-time Grand Slam champion 6-1, 6-4, to continue her meteoric rise up the rankings.

Mboko lost just one set in four matches at the tournament after turning in four of Gauff’s five break points.

I was so stoked when I first started the match, Mboko said.

“I made every effort to maintain my composure, especially when I play in front of a lot of people. For me, this is a very special experience.

She won 22 straight matches without a set as she raced to fifth place on the second-tier ITF Tour, beginning the year as a 333rd player in the world.

Mboko was ranked 85th overall when she won the tournament, but she will move up to 53rd if she defeats Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who was only two places higher. In the quarter-finals, Mboko will face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

Gauff once more struggled with her serve, causing six double errors, bringing her total to 43 in three matches.

“I believe she will be very successful on the road.” In the future, Gauff assured that there will be many more battles.

Second seed Iga Swiatek defeated Eva Lys 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the last 16.

Casper Ruud and Karen Khachanov were both defeated in Toronto, but top seed Alexander Zverev made it to the quarter-finals with a walkover victory over Francisco Cerundolo.
