After 15 years, Judy Parfitt has made an open letter regarding the cancellation of the BBC drama.

Call the Midwife legend Judy Parfitt has reflected on her time starring on the BBC One drama as it’s set to take a break.

The 90-year-old actress has played Sister Monica Joan in the popular show since it launched on television in January 2012. Her character is a wise but eccentric woman who dotes on eating cake and lending a kind ear to those in need.

Sister Monica Joan has dedicated her entire life to religious service, midwifery, and helping the poorest and most in need people of Poplar, East London.

Unfortunately, the sister’s life hasn’t been easy because her family never accepted her choices, and her relatives have publicly criticized her for being a nun.

Sister Monica Joan found a family in the Nonnatus House nuns and nurses, and thankfully, she embraced her faith.

The new Call the Midwife season kicks off on January 11 and moves to 1971. The Women’s Liberation Movement, Premature Births, Cancer Diagnoses, and many other topics are examined in the new era.

Call the Midwife has confirmed its 16th series, continuing its journey back to the 1970s. A prequel, which centers on Nonnatus House’s early years, will also be produced and set in Poplar during World War II.

In order to make room for the prequel and movie, the regular series of Call the Midwife will also be broadcast. The film will also feature a spin-off film set in 1972 overseas.

Judy explained that she will be affected if she doesn’t film episodes in the spring and how she has spent her time on the show as Sister Monica Joan over the past 15 years.

She told the Radio Times: “From about the beginning of March, you start thinking how lovely it’ll be to see everyone and start working again. Then it’s April, and I usually look forward to April.

For it to not be there really shook me up. We are a family because this business has been through a lot together. We will all have to struggle.

The actress also praised Sister Monica Joan, a character she portrayed admirably. She continued, “I’ve always wanted to play a nun because I was raised by nuns, and I adored Monica Joan’s persona.

I don’t know what I’ll do without her, actually, but the way she was described as quirky and offbeat was wonderful.

During the Call the Midwife Christmas special, which aired on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, some of the action moved away from Nonnatus House as disaster struck at the order’s branch house in Hong Kong.
