Call of Duty video game creator Vince Zampella has been killed in a car crash in California . The 55-year-old is thought to have been travelling along a road in mountains north of Los Angeles at lunchtime today when his Ferrari veered from the road and hit a concrete barrier.

According to US media reports, the car had two passengers, with the driver dying at the scene and the passenger recovering in a hospital. California Highway Patrol received a report of the collision at 12: 45pm. Zampella was not the only passenger or the driver.

Zampella was one of the founders of video game developer Infinity Ward when he produced Call of Duty in 2003. The first-person shooter is one of the biggest gaming franchises of all time, selling more than 500million copies. It spawned a range of spin-offs, including Modern Warfare and most recently Black Ops.

He later founded Respawn Entertainment, which released another critically acclaimed shooter game, Titanfall, in 2014. After being acquired by video game studio Electronic Arts three years later, the business eventually became Medal of Honor, a significant franchise.

EA stated in a statement released tonight that this loss is unfathomable, and that his family, his loved ones, and everyone who has been affected by his work are in our thoughts. Vince had a significant and profound impact on the video game industry.
