Josh Cullen, the right-knife captain for Burnley, has an anterior cruciate ligament injury that will require him to spend “prolonged periods on the sidelines.”
Before being replaced by Florentino Luis, the Republic of Ireland midfielder picked up the injury early in the second half of Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Everton.
The 29-year-old is scheduled to have surgery after scans on Monday confirmed the injury.
The Clarets’ statement read, “Everyone at Burnley Football Club wishes Josh all the best for a quick and successful recovery.”
Before missing Burnley’s 3-1 defeat at Newcastle on Tuesday, Cullen started all 18 of the season’s 18 games.
After going eight games without winning, Scott Parker’s team are 19th in the Premier League and six points clear of safety.
