Before the week-long event in Black Rock Desert in Nevada officially opening yesterday, Burning Man’s Black Rock City was hit by dust and wind storms over the weekend.

On Saturday, a dust storm reportedly hit Burning Man’s Black Rock City and sped up to 50 mph.

A dust storm involving winds of up to 50mph is said to have led to several injuries and damaged campsites at Burning Man’s Black Rock City on the weekend. The gate into the community in the US was temporarily closed at one point.

The event, held annually in Black Rock Desert, located north of Reno, Nevada, is running from August 24 to September 1 this year. Early arrivals for Burning Man, which has attracted celebrities such as Cara Delevingne and Paris Hilton in previous years, faced adverse weather on Saturday though.

Images from social media sites showed dusty conditions at the site, with wind and visibility affecting tents as a result. Four minor injuries are said to have occurred. Additionally, it’s reported that a community art installation was destroyed and that campsites were damaged.

According to the radar we were monitoring, one attendee, Angie Peacock, “we were anticipating 35 mph winds, so we made sure everything was secure around our camp,” she told the San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday. Very quickly, things completely turned “white out” conditions.

Attendeess claimed they could not see 15 feet in front of them at the time. Even though we tried our best to tie everything down, we saw structures being torn down and ripped down by the winds, according to Angela.

Angie claimed that some people hid in shipping containers while others stayed in their cars. The attendees claimed that everyone has come “closer together” because of the situation and are confident that their camp will resurrect.

A Burning Man spokesperson told the Mirror: “Black Rock City 2025 is underway, and the communal effort and resilience of the Burning Man community is on full display. Participants are setting up camp and, due to Saturday evening’s dust and wind storms, are supporting others where repair work is needed for camps and art installations.”

The Black Rock Desert is not specifically addressed by the media, according to them. The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory on Saturday, August 23 for the Black Rock Desert.

“Over 45 mph were spewed over 45 mph over a long period of time.” The participants and staff were advised to close their camps and refrain from driving in low visibility. Normal operations resumed within two hours after the Gate was temporarily closed.

The spokesperson then confirmed that the storm had resulted in a number of minor injuries. According to them, “The wind and dust caused four minor injuries.”

The statement concluded by reiterating the status of weather updates on the BRC Dashboard for the community. The spokesperson added that those attending can access a survival guide that is available on the company’s website.

Burning Man participants and the general public can access the BRC Dashboard to find out about Black Rock City’s most recent weather and traffic updates. Details on preparedness and safety are included in the detailed information in the Burning Man Survival Guide, which was provided to all participants and is accessible to the public.
