Bobby Portis Jr., a forward for the Milwaukee Bucks, has received a 25-game non-pay suspension from the NBA for failing a drug test.
The NBA confirmed the 30-year-old has tested positive for the painkiller Tramadol, which is a banned substance.
The Bucks’ play-off contest with the LA Clippers on Thursday at 2:00 local time will set Portis Jr’s suspension in motion.
The Bucks’ 79th game of their 82-game regular season will feature him against the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 8. He won’t be available until that day.
“I was dealing with an elbow injury and using an NBA-approved medication for pain and inflammation”, said Portis Jr.
“During that time, I made an honest mistake and took a pain-reducing anti-inflammatory pill that is not approved. I understand what I put in my body and feel bad about it.
Portis Jr., who won the NBA championship with the Bucks in 2021, had been making 46 appearances this year and was averaging 13.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
In the Eastern Conference standings, the Bucks are currently fifth.
For Bobby and our team, this is a very challenging set of circumstances,” said Bucks general manager Jon Horst.
” He and the Bucks respect the NBA/NBAPA Anti-Drug Program and will accept what’s been handed down. But we 100% support Bobby. “
