Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) was identified as Bruce Willis’s diagnosis. In a recent documentary, his wife Emma revealed a few things about his health.
Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma Heming Willis, made a heartbreaking revelation about her relationship with the actor following his frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis in 2023. The family regularly take to social media to share updates on his condition as they try their best to continue their everyday lives while looking after the star.
His family announced in 2022 that the Die Hard star, 70, would be retiring from the industry after initially being diagnosed with aphasia – a brain disorder that leads to difficulty in understanding or producing speech. A year later, it was revealed he was also diagnosed with FTD.
His loving wife, 47, has accompanied him throughout the journey, but she recently admitted she wishes she could “have a conversation with him.”

Emma and Diane Sawyer were asked if they could talk to each other about something in an ABC special called Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey.
She stated, “I’d check on him to see how he’s doing, if he’s okay, he feels okay.” If there is anything we can do to better support him. That is something I would really like to know. if he fears. if he ever has concerns. I’d really like to talk to him informally.
Emma explained that Bruce no longer lives with the rest of the family and that he would prefer for our daughters, Mabel Ray, 13, and Evelyn Penn, 11, to live in a different home.
“He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs,” she added. The family made the difficult decision to move the Sixth Sense star into the nearby one-story property, safe for him and his 24-hour care team to navigate, “some time ago”.
Before the move, she learned that Bruce’s condition became agitated by noise, which required Emma to stop hosting hangouts and sleepovers for the girls, which ultimately impacted their lives.
“I wasn’t sure if parents would like to leave their children at home,” Emma said. I deliberately isolated our entire family, which was difficult. Although he is now residing elsewhere, Bruce and the family can live there more easily.
The young daughters “have their things there,” according to Emma, and they frequently visit their “second home.” Emma has been appreciative of how many of his friends continue to show up to support him, and that the house is “filled with love, warmth, care, and laughter.” Bruce is physically strong, but his speech ability is waning. The family has still managed to communicate, though.
Bruce is still very mobile, she said. You’re aware that Bruce is in excellent overall health. His brain is only failing him, it seems. We can communicate with him in a completely different way. But I’m appreciative. My husband’s presence is greatly appreciated.
Demi Moore, the actor’s ex-wife, and her children frequently spend time with them, despite the fact that he was married to them from 1987 to 2000. Together with The Substance actress Rumer Willis, 36, Scout Willis, 33, and Tallulah Willis, 31, he has three daughters.
Emma still feels connected to Bruce despite her initial isolation as a result of his diagnosis and lives in complete silence with her loved ones.
He lights up when we are with him, she said. We are kissing him while he is holding our hands. He is receiving our hug. He reciprocates. He enjoys it. All I need is that. We were married on this day, so I don’t need him to know that I’m his wife. None of that is necessary for me. I just want to feel connected to him, which I do.
