More female performers have received the nods than ever for this year’s show, which is taking place in Manchester.
More female nominees than ever are being received at this year’s BRIT Awards, and Olivia Dean and Lola Young are a force in the field. At the ceremony taking place in Manchester next month for the first time, both candidates will compete in five categories.
Lola is up for Best Artist, Best Alternative/Rock Act, Best Pop Act, Best Breakthrough, and Best Album of the Year, while Olivia is up for Best Artist, Best Pop Act, and Best Breakthrough and Song of the Year. Sam Fender has four nominations, including best song, artist, album, and alternative/rock act, behind only Sam Fender.
Best artist, album, and pop act are the three nods given to Lily Allen. The highest proportion of nominees ever, according to estimates, are female or non-binary, or about 70%. The show faced a backlash in 2023 when it was revealed that no women had been chosen for the best artist prize, replacing the gendered best male and female categories.
The show is taking place on February 28. Manchester’s Co-op Live arena – the biggest indoor venue in the UK – is also hosting the awards next year too after 45 ceremonies in London. The Brits have been held at the O2 Arena since 2011.
Before that, they were hosted by a variety of venues in London including Earl’s Court, Alexandra Palace and the Royal Albert Hall. Andy Burnham, metro mayor of Greater Manchester, said at the time: “This is a massive coup for Greater Manchester. After 48 years, it is great that this prestigious event is about to arrive in the UK capital of music and culture.
“Greater Manchester has an unparalleled music heritage known around the world and this summer will play host to some of the biggest gigs on the planet. That was made possible by our commitment to new talent and giving emerging artists opportunities to make their name. Celebrating the Brit Awards here is the next chapter in its story and you can be sure that we will help them do it in style.”
The first three years under Sony Music UK’s leadership, which was the one who organized the move to Manchester, will also be held this year. It will allow the annual ceremony to expand to other parts of the UK in the future. In October, Newcastle will host The Mercury Music Prize, which also departs from London for the first time.
