Matthew Brennan, a British teenager, won stage five of the Volta a Catalunya, marking his second consecutive victory.
In three hours, 28 minutes, and 14 seconds, Visma-Lease A Bike’s 19-year-old Brennan, who had won his first World Tour victory, edged past Netherlands’ and Alpecin-Deceuninck rider Tibor del Grosso for another close victory.
With just one categorised climb during the 172km stage, the sprinters were adversely affected by strong winds in the closing 20km.
We worked all day, and according to Brennan, “we knew the final stretch would be a little tense.”
We entered the finish line in a good position, according to “I think the entire team was there at the end.” I’m so happy I got to finish them off.
Juan Ayoso, who competes for UAE Team Emirates XRG, maintains his position at the top of the general classification, but Primoz Roglic of Red Bull Bora-hansgrohe has widened their time gap by just one second.
Enric Mas, a second and a half behind, is now 21 seconds clear of the pair in third place.
