BRIT Awards 2025 announce winner of Songwriter of the Year as fans say star was ‘robbed’

The recipient of the Songwriter of the Year Award has been announced for the BRIT Awards 2025 with Mastercard.

The most coveted songwriter award was presented to this year’s most popular artist, Charli xcx, after a fantastic year in the music industry. Charli, 30, is nominated for five BRIT awards, the highest number of any artist this year, for the categories of Artist of the Year, Mastercard Album of the Year, Song of the Year with Mastercard, Dance Act and Pop Act.

The BRITs Songwriter of the Year award, recognising exceptional songwriting talent, is decided by a select panel of expert judges, with previous recipients including Ed Sheeran, Kid Harpoon, and RAYE, who won the prestigious award during the 2024 ceremony.

The BRIT Committee for 2025, led by Damian Christian, Managing Director and President of Promotions at Atlantic Records (part of Warner Music UK) and chair of the BRIT Committee for the year, praised Charli’s win, transforming her experimental electronic and pop style from underground raves into the heart of popular culture.

” Charli’s songwriting is distinctive, bold and relentlessly innovative, and, having been one of the UK’s leading songwriters for a number of years now, has taken her craft to new heights with her global phenomenon Brat. I’m delighted that she received this much-deserved award.

Electronica superstar Charli’s sixth studio album, “BRAT,” was released in June, and it is considered to be the album with the highest level of reviews of the year so far. It climbed to No. 1 on the UK Official Album Chart in October. The album received a Mercury Prize nomination for 2024, and Billie Eilish’s “Gutsman” debuted at No. 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart, making Charli the first British artist to top the charts in the year prior.

Additionally, Charli received the Visionary Award at the 2023 Ivor Novellos in London, the ASCAP Global Impact Award in May, and the Music Innovator Award from the Wall Street Journal in October, as well as the Powerhouse Award at Billboard’s Women in Music ceremony in March.

Despite Charli’s well-deserved win, some music fans have claimed that another nominee was ‘ robbed ‘ of the coveted award. Fans of Sam Fender have argued that the award should have been given to him because his new album, People Watching, shot straight to the top of the charts and is already on the verge of becoming his most popular record to date.

With the fifth consecutive live performance from JADE, Lola Young, Myles Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, who will be honored with BRITs Global Success**, Sam Fender, Teddy Swims, and The Last Dinner Party, as well as awards presentations and other memorable moments, this year’s BRIT Awards promises another unbeatable evening of live music and entertainment. Jack Whitehall will lead the charge for the fifth time.
