As they entered their World Championship quarter-final on Wednesday evening, Luca Brecel put together a spectacular potting performance to draw level with Judd Trump, who is currently eighth overall.

The “Belgian Bullet” racked off the first four frames in less than an hour as he compiled three-hundred and one-half centuries and a century to take the 7-5 lead overnight after trailing 5-3.

Brecel gave an astonishing performance, which was the kind of performance that helped him win the world title two years ago.

By the time he took the 12th frame, he had won six straight, including the final two from Tuesday’s opening session, outscoring the Englishman 592 to 81 during that purple patch.

Trump, who won the Crucible trophy only once in 2019, regrouped in the middle of the session and compiled a half-century of his own to bring the score to 7-7.

The Brecel barrage was only briefly interrupted by the four-time champion of the event’s 92-run run, which gave him a quick advantage of 8-7.

Trump, however, chose a tactic final frame to make the matchup less risky when it resumes at 19:00 BST.

Analysis: Luca might be the “hotshot reel” of the “hotshot reel”

Because it had everything, what a wonderful World Championship advertisement. The audience was glued to their chairs for a while. They were delighted to leave today.

About 10 shots of Luca’s own could be chosen from the hotshot reel of this World Championship. His shots are some truly incredible.
