The legendary Brigitte Bardot was a force unstoppable that completely altered how men and relationships were perceived by the public.
The world is mourning the actress and style icon, whose death aged 91 has today been announced after she was rushed to hospital following an illness. The French activist was one of the first celebrated sex symbols as the bombshell revolutionised the art of love-making in her own unashamed style.
When asked if she felt comfortable wearing a racy dress, the Parisian sex siren famously responded that “it is more important that men feel uncomfortable.” She later became the face of the swinging 60s.
There was also a “no nonsense about love,” Brigitte said, and she had many millions of fans, including Beatles legend John Lennon, who had a life-size image of the star on his ceiling. At the height of her fame, she would eventually stop acting and concentrate on animal welfare.
Not everyone liked her sarcastic stance toward sex. In an article asking if she should be banned, columnist Dick William criticized her for “every time I pick up a newspaper or go by a theater marquee there she is, blasted all over the place with her stringy, unkempt hair, her plunging necklines, her bare feet, her vapid eyes, and her half-opened mouth. Her “casual attitude toward marriage” is both revolting and moral.
She marries Roger Vadim in 1952, and she later wed Jacques Charrier, and they wed repeatedly throughout. She wed Gunter Sachs in 1966 after only three years of marriage. She retired from her wild ways and spent the rest of her life with Bernard d’Ormale after saying “I do” in the 1990s. She had her last husband.
She is also survived by her fourth husband, Nicolas-Jacques Charrier, her grandchildren, Anna and Thea, and her fourth husband. Additionally, the actress leaves her sister, Mijanou Bardot, and several great-grandchildren behind.
She helped turn the bikini into a representation of a generation embracing freedom, pleasure, and a rapidly evolving consumer culture, which is still popular among women worldwide today.
At the age of 15, Brigitte made her debut as a model and appeared on the cover of Elle. Women of my generation are all remembered by Nicole Parrot, a historian of fashion, in later times. She gave rise to something that had never previously had a place in society or fashion: “the jeune fille.”
She died on December 28 at her home in Saint Tropez, France, following a recent hospitalisation. French media reports indicated the operation was part of a treatment plan for an unspecified but “serious illness.”
The And God Created Woman star previously spent time in the hospital twice for respiratory problems in 2023, and Brigitte revealed that she was dependent on crutches and was unable to walk anymore.
The Brigitte Bardot Foundation announced her passing in a statement from her foundation, which read, “Ms. Bardot, a world-renowned actress and singer, who chose to devote her life and energy to animal welfare and her foundation.
