The Lagos State House of Assembly appears to have finally resolved its long-standing leadership crisis.
Just 50 days into her position, Mojisola Meranda, the first female speaker of the House, announced her resignation during a live plenary session.
After Meranda left, Mudashiru Obasa was reportedly reinstated as the speaker, and her resignation paves the way for a new one.
At the Monday plenary, Meranda read out her letter of resignation, reading: “This is my resignation as the Lagos State House of Assembly.”
According to Persecondnews, she resigned as the speaker immediately and Mudashiru Obasa assumed his post.
Following Obasa’s impeachment based on allegations of gross misconduct and power abuse, Meranda assumed office as speaker on January 13, 2025, according to Persecondnews.
Despite her brief tenure, lawmakers praised her ability to create a positive atmosphere in the Assembly, which goes against all of her leadership prowess.
Nojeed Fatai, the deputy speaker, and Sanni Okanlawon, the chief whip, were the only other important officers who were elected along with Meranda.
