Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston opens up on devastating impact of fame on his marriage

Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston said he is still battling with challenges fame has put on his personal life – including his own marriage.

Bryan, 69, has to “find ways” to deal with being a celebrity, despite bursting onto the acting scene more than four decades ago. The actor, who played central character Walter White in each of the five series of Breaking Bad, said fame “offsets your personal relationship” in a candid speech at at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

He told the audience: “There’s the factor of this weird thing called celebrity and fame and what that does, and it offsets your personal relationship. I’ve been married for 36 years and we’ve seen it like, ‘Oh wow, what’s happening?’

“The luck and good fortune I’ve had creates that ascension of opportunity. But, then you are working just as hard. It’s a better way to work than not having a job offer, but the offers are flooding, and you have to then sort and put people off and figure out and go, ‘Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. How do I deal with this?'”

Bryan married actress Robin Dearden, 71, in 1989 and they share 32-year-old daughter Taylor Dearden, also a performer. Bryan told the audience how he has had to protect his family over the years as publicity surged around Breaking Bad.

Photographers have, Bryan said, pushed Robin aside in order to get solo images of him. She has taken a step back from acting in recent years, with her last major film credit for the 2017 comedy Chicanery.

“It’s an interesting dynamic and I find ways to deal with it, and I think that’s like anything else. You go, “Okay, by and large, that came with being lucky in my profession,'” Bryan continued.

Undeterred, Bryan remains very active in the industry, unlike his spouse. He has just premiered his new film, Everything’s Going to Be Great, at the Tribeca Film Festival, and released his new film The Phoenician Scheme. He also stars in Seth Rogen’s Apple TV+ series, The Studio.

In addition, he has eight other projects in the works, including the much-anticipated Malcolm in the Middle reboot coming later this year, which he teased is “just as crazy” and “just as much fun” as the original that first aired 25 years ago.

Bryan and Robin met on the set of TV show Airwolf, which aired from 1984 to 1987. In an early episode, Bryan was playing the villain of the week and Robin played a hostage he held at gunpoint. Their daughter, Taylor, recently made her acting debut in the drama series, The Pitt.
