Brazil’s Bolsonaro denied hospital visit after hitting head in prison fall

Brazilian ex-president Jair Bolsonaro was in jail and had his head struck in his cell, but the country’s top judge turned down his request to visit.

His wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, posted a picture of the 70-year-old right-wing leader on Instagram on Tuesday, saying he struck his head on a piece of furniture while he was sleeping.

“We’re going to the hospital,” the statement read. Michelle Bolsonaro stated, “My love will go through exams.”

Bolsonaro’s request to leave prison for tests at a hospital in Brasilia was denied, however, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

Bolsonaro received his first medical treatment in the morning, according to a statement from the federal police, adding that a doctor from the federal police “found minor injuries” and concluded there was no need for hospitalization.

The Supreme Court’s approval is required for any hospital referral, it continued.

Bolsonaro, who was stabbed in the abdomen during a campaign event in 2018, has a history of hospitalizations and procedures related to the incident.

De Moraes stated in his ruling that Bolsonaro should not be taken immediately to the hospital in light of the police report. Lawyers must schedule them ahead of time and provide evidence supporting the procedures, according to the judge, but his legal team has the right to request them for Bolsonaro exams.

In December, Bolsonaro underwent a number of medical procedures to treat hernia and hiccups.
