After author Richard Curtis published a script for an abandoned episode of the BBC sitcom for charity, Blackadder fans now stand a chance to own a piece of history.

Blackadder writers have a cunning plan to unleash an abandoned episode of the iconic sitcom back onto the world. An unfilmed script was sadly ditched before production in 1988, but writer Richard Curtis has revealed there is a chance yet for Blackadder in Bethlehem.

The “lost” work by Curtis and Ben Elton depicts Edmund Blackadder as an innkeeper approached by Joseph and Mary as they seek a bed for the night. It features Celebrity Traitors star Sir Stephen Fry, who starred as General Melchett.

The script is up for auction, so fans now have a chance to own it. Every child deserves the best start in life, a safe place to learn, and skills for the future, thanks to the proceeds from the sale.

Fry was “wonderfully over-acting as usual,” according to Curtis. And Fry was quick to criticize his 80s aesthetic with a jibe. However, the pair acknowledged that it was the best course of action to donate the script to “the most amazing charity.”

Curtis gushed, “Theirworld is the most amazing charity.” What extraordinary idea was it to donate the script? If you bid enough, a child will receive an education, two, or three children, and you’ll be bidding some money.

Additionally included in the auction lot are Curtis’s handwritten filming notes from the Blackadder Goes Forth episode Corporal Punishment, an original studio script from the episode.

Following its debut season in 1983, Blackadder was a huge hit. There were four series, with four special episodes, up until 1989. The Blackadder dynasty plot raged through British history in the period comedy, which also featured Hugh Laurie, Tony Robinson, Tim McInnerny, and Ron Atkinson.

Atkinson had a “very odd way of reading,” according to Fry, who had previously opened up about the show’s rehearsals. He claimed that the main character would “read with his fingers in his ears” when he spoke to The Show People Podcast.

“Richard and Ben stopped coming because they found it such a depressing experience,” he added, saying the group would often question their work. Fry admitted the ensemble would often “over-discuss” and “craft” jokes in rehearsals for the BBC show.

And he acknowledged that the group was “terribly nervous” that fans would not enjoy a new season of the sitcom because it had entered a completely different era. However, with the success of the show’s numerous BAFTA TV Awards and an International Emmy Award over the years, viewers both enjoyed it and more.

Speaking of the special donation, Theirworld Chair Sarah Brown said: “The generous donation will give two gifts at once – a brighter future for young children in projects in Kenya and India, and an unforgettable Christmas present for a Blackadder fan.”

The sale began on November 25 and continues until December 1 at 10 p.m. At Jumblebee, bidding begins at £550 and increases to £20. . uk/blackadderchristmas
