A supermarket expert has identified the best times to find discounts at major retailers like Asda, Tesco, and Sainsbury’s.

Numerous households begin to be under financial strain in the weeks following Christmas. Shopping is paying more attention to their weekly food bills as a result of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

While numerous supermarkets, such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco, offer loyalty programmes that reward points and discounts on specific products, this often falls short. One way shoppers can cut costs on supermarket goods is by hunting for yellow sticker reductions.

However, spotting yellow sticker bargains can be tricky, particularly if you’re not a frequent supermarket shopper. Richard Price, grocery specialist at Britsuperstore, has extensive experience analysing supermarket pricing and is a leading authority on securing the best value in your weekly shopping.

He has offered his professional guidance to shoppers seeking to capitalise on reductions throughout the day and strategically time their shopping trips to optimise savings, reports the Express.

He said: “January can be a tough month financially, especially after the excesses of Christmas and the long wait for the next payday. That’s why yellow sticker deals are such a game-changer. Most major supermarkets, including Morrisons, Aldi, and Asda, follow a two-round reduction strategy, with the first wave of discounts typically occurring in the morning, and the second – and often larger – reduction happening in the evening or just before closing.

These reductions vary from store to store, but they can be as much as 10% to 25% in the morning or as much as 90% in the evening, especially for perishable items that are nearing the expiration date.

“Supermarkets offer these discounts in two stages because they don’t want to lose customers on high-demand goods right away, but they also need to clear up excess stock before it goes bad,” said the spokesperson. For instance, 90% of all evening discounts are available on prepared meals, baked goods, fresh meat, and dairy products, preventing food waste while saving money.

The grocery expert has identified the best times to find bargains in the top British supermarkets, including:

When are the best times to shop in UK supermarkets for discounts on yellow stickers?

Morrisons

Early in the evening (approximately 5 p.m.) for up to 90% off, with some products also being marked down in the morning.

Products to check for: Ready meals, fresh meat, dairy, pies, and fruits and vegetables are frequently reduced by 90% or more. Products that are close to their use-by dates, like meat and fresh bread, are typically subject to the final reductions.

Tips:

  • Ask store staff about reduction times; they’re frequently more than happy to assist because reducing waste is a part of their policy.
  • Fruit and vegetables are frequently the places to find the biggest discounts, so keep an eye on them.
  • To avoid food waste, bulk purchasing may seem appealing, but it’s best to only buy items that can be used or stored.

Watch out for products on their last day of shelf life: Bread, meat, fruits, and vegetables typically receive up to 75% off.
