The State Caucus in the National Assembly has strongly condemned recent events in the state legislature, particularly the controversial removal of the State Chief Judge, Justice Maurice Ikpambese, in light of the rising political unrest in Benue State.
The caucus declared the action null and void, calling it unlawful and unconstitutional. The state’s lawmakers urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to intervene immediately to stop a looming constitutional crisis.
The Benue National Assembly Caucus warned at a press conference on Wednesday that the constitution’s requirements could lead to the National Assembly taking over the Benue State House of Assembly’s affairs.
They remarked that “this press conference serves as a call to the NJC to intervene right away to stop the looming crisis.”

In response to the crisis, they also urged the National Assembly to invoke its constitutional authority to retake control of the Benue Assembly, citing a section of the House’s incompetence in upholding democracy and the rule of law.
Benue State’s elected National Assembly members in a Caucus decided as follows:
“The Benue State House of Assembly’s (UNC) immediate and unconditional rescission of the constitutionally unlawful resolution to remove the State Chief Judge,
“The immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the House of Assembly’s suspension of some members, and the withdrawal of the House of Assembly’s decision.”
