Benue Assembly Faults NBA, NJC Stance Over CJ Case

Benue Assembly Faults NBA, NJC Stance Over CJ Case

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is accused of interfering with the affairs of the state to appease some Abuja-based Benue politicians.

Saater Tiseer, the Assembly’s Majority Leader, addressed journalists at the Government House on Thursday, telling them to “act on the concerns of Governor Hyacinth Alia.”

A two-thirds of the House’s vote, according to Tiseer, was supported by the House’s resolution to remove Justice Maurice Ikpambese, the state’s controversied chief judge.

The majority leader also criticised the National Judicial Council’s (NJC) response to the CJ’s removal procedure, noting that the assembly has no business dealing with the NJC if it adheres to section 292 of the constitution.

Justice Ikpambese remained the Chief Judge of Benue State, according to the NJC on Wednesday, and the alleged removal by the House of Assembly from the state cannot continue.

According to a media report, the Benue State House of Assembly purportedly passed a Resolution reversing the state’s chief judge, Hon. Justice Maurice Ikpambese, from office,” The judicial council had said.

Council regrets this development, reiterating that the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution, 1999, has clear and unambiguous rules that are inconsistent with the current case.
