The This Morning presenter has revealed how his new, toned appearance has affected their meal times after being married to wife Annie for 21 years.

Ben Shephard ’s new six pack wasn’t always a firm favourite with his wife, as it threatened to damage their mealtimes together. Much-loved This Morning host Ben, 50, has been married to Annie for 21 years.

And he is in the same shape as he did when he last posed for a 2012 magazine cover, where many men who are twenty years older would be proud.

When asked what makes his toned appearance, Ben replies, “Abs are really made in the kitchen.” When I went through this [the cover shoot] in 2012, I realized it!

My wife cooks the majority of the meals, and I’m turning around and telling myself, “I’ve got to have enough protein.” In order for me to enjoy our dinners, we agreed that I would only need what I needed during the day. We still want to share that special evening with you despite things you don’t want to say.

Ben is a man on a mission, and he is a man who wants to make the most of life. There is also no indication that he is regretting turning 50.

He adds: “I’m much more conscious of the fact that I’ve probably got less time ahead of me than I have behind me – that’s the reality of it. I was working with [fellow presenter] Alison Hammond last week and when she turned 50, someone said to her, ‘Welcome to the fifth floor.’ That felt like a lovely way of describing it – you’re still looking up to those other floors, but looking down as well.”

Ben is a keen runner and also spends time in the gym when he is not fronting ITV shows including This Morning and Tipping Point. One source of inspiration has been training and trying to keep up with his sons Jack and Sam.

I’ve really, really enjoyed showing my 18- and 19-year-old sons that I can still compete with them, they say. We enjoy working together. And Sam, my eldest, is one of the people who really inspired them when they say I look like I’ve trained hard.

He continues, “I think I value the state I’m in now more than in 2012,” adding: “I think I value the situation I’m in now more.” For the record, I have more lean muscle. My body has larger parts, in some cases. My body fat is, in my opinion, a little higher than it was then. I believe I’m now between 10.5% and 10.8%, which is unusual considering that I’m 13 years older than that at the time.

“The cover shoot was fantastic,” she said. What one exercise, according to a friend, made the biggest difference? It’s consistency, not an exercise.

Ben insists that as a result of his years of training, he has “deeper understanding” of what it takes to “build lean muscle” and lose body fat.

He asserted that “being stronger, both physically and mentally, is undoubtedly harder the older you get. I was still a victim of the attack in my forties. I’m on the defensive in my fifties. It’s all about how I keep going and keeping it in the center rather than the middle.

It is very seductive and enticing to “pove to yourself that you have the discipline to do something” and to demonstrate that you can be held accountable to yourself. You want that more of the more you get.

He also asserts that he wants to stay in shape and hopes to shoot a sixth pack when he reaches the age of 60.

There are many fitness influencers who are not just in their 20s and 30s but also in their 50s, 60s, and 70s, still working out, living, owning, and looking fantastic. That is incredibly inspiring to me. The hairline is still present despite the fact that there may be a little more gray in it right now. Why not do it once more at 60?

The full interview is now available for purchase in Men’s Health UK’s June issue.
