BBC’s Monty Don ‘lost everything’ with wife as kids asked ‘Why is Daddy crying?’

After he and his wife, Sarah Don, had severe depressive episodes during the financial crash of the 1980s, Gardners’ World host Monty Don has spoken out about a time when they were struggling.

Monty Don, 69, has openly discussed a time when his and his wife Sarah were going through difficult times, most notably during the 1980s economic downturn, during which Monty struggled with severe depression.

The couple first met when they were both Cambridge University English students.

Monty met Sarah (née Erskine), a jewelry designer and architect who had received a degree in jewelry design.

Together they embarked on a successful venture, running a high-end jewellery business in Knightsbridge, serving clientele like Michael Jackson and Princess Diana.

But their fortunes took a dire turn amid the financial crash of the 1980s, reports the Express.

We lost everything, Monty told The Times, “We lost our house, our business,” at this dire adage. At the Leominster market, Monty admitted that she had sold every piece of furniture.

After the bankruptcy of the company, Monty was severely depressed, prompting Sarah to urge him to seek medical attention.

Their children would innocently inquire, “Why does Daddy always cry? ” to Sarah. ‘.

She further stated, “She said you need to see a doctor because we can’t handle having three young children and living together.” You can only help me if I need help, and I need it.

Monty also remarked on how antidepressants were an initial aid and spoke highly of the cognitive behavioural therapy he received courtesy of the NHS.

Monty told Sarah in 2008 that she wanted to pass away in her arms following a stroke. Hold me, my spouse, because you think I’m dying, and I want to pass away in your arms, he told them. ‘”.

Due to the incident, Monty was forced to take a three-year break from presenting Gardeners’ World and has since recovered fully.

His minor stroke was discovered only after Monty consulted a neurologist, who was a retired doctor’s son.

Since taking over from Alan Titchmarsh in 2003, he has been the lead presenter of Gardeners’ World. The celebrity first graced our screens in 1989 with a gardening segment on ITV’s This Morning. This opened up more television opportunities, leading to his own shows on BBC and Channel 4 throughout the years.

He also launched a lucrative writing career, publishing his first book among more than 25 books in 1990.

Monty wrote a regular gardening column for The Observer between 1994 and 2006.
